Canada Basketball announced Wednesday the 12 athletes named to the Senior Women’s National Team

Jun 25, 2025

TORONTO (June 25, 2025) – Canada Basketball announced Wednesday the 12 athletes named to the Senior Women’s National Team for the upcoming FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025.

Featuring the top ten teams in the zone competing in the most prestigious senior women’s basketball tournament in the Americas, the FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2025 is set for June 28-July 6 in Santiago, Chile. All the action will be streaming live on FIBA’s Courtside 1891. Fans can watch for free by creating an account.

Canada will share Group A with Argentina, Brazil, Dominican Republic and El Salvador, with the top four teams in the group advancing to the quarter-finals. From there, a single-knockout format will follow. The top six teams will earn entry into 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.

Making up the roster are five Olympians who suited up for the Senior Women’s National Team in Paris last summer, in Kayla Alexander, Shay Colley, Yvonne Ejim, Sami Hill and Syla Swords.

While the likes of Bridget Carleton, Aaliyah Edwards and Kia Nurse starring in the WNBA during the competition, in comes seven Canadians who will round out the roster — Niyah Becker, Shy Day-Wilson, Delaney Gibb, Phillipina Kyei, Emily Potter, Merissah Russell and Tara Wallack.

Canada will be looking to capture their fourth AmeriCup title, first winning the tournament in 1995, followed by back-to-back victories in 2015 — on home soil in Edmonton — and 2017. Canada has finished top four in each of the last eight editions of the competition, dating back to 2009, including a bronze medal win in 2023.
