UEC's website is a bit of mess as usual, but the Tissot official timing website is a bit easier to understand, and you'll need it for the results of the morning sessions.

Looking at the results coming in….the Women’s Team Sprint is now being run in the same three rider/three lap format the men use, which means not many of the smaller countries can present teams, so only 6 nations competing.  I’m supposing that’s going to be the default format now?

Two WRs for :NED in the 3 woman sprint & two golds. French men completely messed up their start, were lucky not to be lapped.  :GBR Katie Archibald set a new record with her 15th Euro Gold, this time for the Scratch.

Yes, this format kicked in during the last Europeans in 2020. We had 4 teams last time, so slow progress.

Tokyo Olympics officially was the last competition with 2 riders per women's team.

And I guess :LTU is one of those countries that is not able to find three sprinters?

One of many ... France didn't field any TS in major championships recently, and it's not going to change. Because even if you do find a third sprinter, the level drop is way too important.

Since Tokyo was held in 2021, there is not much time left to adapt for Paris 2024, and the format requires strong adaptations. The "finisher" has to cover 750m when the longest distance a female sprinter can run is 500m (there is no such thing as a +2 laps full sprint in the individual events), so for this particular role you will need a resistant sprinter. Then the 2-riders format force the team to make a choice between a strong TS and strong individuals, in Tokyo China chose to have the first, Germany the second. In order to field both Friedrich and Hinze, Germany had to make one of them a starter, who could be better elsewhere. On the men's side the first one is now nearly systematically a specialist, could be the same for women ... or we'll have a 3-laps specialist to anchor. Yesterday for Russia Tyschenko was clearly better than Shmeleva in this position.

In related news the :IRL government has committed  to building Ireland’s first indoor velodrome.  In fact, a combined cycling/badminton facility, so I can see arguments happening there.

Same thing happened after London 2012 where the 3-rider 3000m TP went to a 4-rider 4000m format.  Took a few years for everyone to get teams together. It’s harder to find or finance track sprinters because there is less chance of a track/road overlap.

Plenty of girls, but no one to match Krupeckaitė and Marozaitė in the same team. During Nationals and Baltics Lithuania had several 3-women teams going for the title, but results failed to match federation's qualification standards. Just like our federation refused to send men's team sprint team, despite sending two male sprinters to the championships.

    • Keeping to the women's hammer theme - worlds silver medalist Jie Zhao has gone out to 78.22 in chengdu a new  and asian record.[tough Chinese women absolutely rule this throwing event in their continent holding the the top 14 all time places].
    • it was all expected, tbh fencing has now become a truly global sport if there's a sport that deserves to increase its olympic quota places (both in the team and individual events), that's fencing ioc can't ignore the elephant in the room
    • This is the first photo from Artemis2 , so earth is not flat , but we live on 1 continent only 1
    • Overall, all of Old Europe is poorly here: France - 0 medals, Germany - 0 medals, Italy - 1 bronze, Hungary - 1 bronze. For many years the fencing authorities' policy has been to give greater support to Asia and other new emergent countries: Africa, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Georgia, etc., and perhaps that's where Europe's crisis? Additionally Russia has returned and is immediately very strong.
    • and the bronze medal has gone, too   won 45-44
    • after the fireworks at the NCAA finals last week, Australian Open from tonight...expecting some interesting clockings
    • How are they going to decide who the 18 teams are for next year's championship? I see world 'C' events on the calendar already so some decisions have probably already been made.
    • qualified to both of Today's Gold Medal games    and beat  in both tournaments in their way through to the final    the disappointing campaign of the young  sabre continues (even if the boys are now playing for bronze against )
