Day 1 and already six athletes from Congo and one from Cameroon, Botswana and Togo didn't appear.

did you really expect them to show up? :p

Well, African athletes do sometimes show up at these events (for example one from Uganda did indeed show up and compete).

https://fencingtimelive.com/tournaments/eventSchedule/63E63654903643BFB7B643531CB24D67#today is going well atm. PS: Ana Branza vs Rosella Fiamingo in second round; what a pity that one of these great fencers will be eliminated so early...

yes, I see that at least we get some results in almost real time...

that's better than nothing...

but I still want to see the early rounds of the main draws live...and I don't trust Chinese streams at all...

p.s. those early "killer match-ups" happen when someone (and I'm talking of Fiamingo, of course) has a couple of consecutive disapponting seasons...

at least Rossella didn't go out in the qualification round...

sure, but Congo athletes have a long history of DNS...

so, better not to expect them to be at the start until you actually see them on the piste...

Same applies to Sierra Leone, if they registered.

Kind of off-topic: do you remember the match-ups between Laura Badea and Vezzali or Trillini in the 90's? I think those were the best women foil bouts I've ever seen (especially Atlanta '96 :p )

If the lights light up exactly at the correct moment, he was definitely first, since his light went on first. Not sure if those lights are 100% accurate though?

sure...;)

I started following Fencing with the 1982 Worlds in Rome, when I was a little child (those champs became -in-famous also outside the fencing world because of the fatal accident that killed the reigning Olympic and World champion in men's foil, the Soviet Vladimir Smirnov)...

let's say it wasn't the easiest approach to the sport...but, despite that tragic day, I've always been liking fencing (by the way, my favourite weapon is men's sabre...man, I remember what used to happen in the late Eighties, when there wasn't the electric signal for the hits yet...every assault was crazy...those refs got really mad all the times) ...

I was 3 in '82 :d If you ever have some spare time, maybe you can tell me what was fencing like before wiring...

well, I'm not that old (I'm gonna turn 44 in 9 days) to remember foil and epee before wiring (my first really clear memories are about the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and those weapons were already wired)...

meanwhile sabre became like the others only after the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games...and I remember that before that, all assaults lasted more than a foil match because there were always a lot of complaints and so many fencers arguing with the refs at every hit...

and actually many times the fencers also had a lot of discussions even between themselves during the assault, reciprocally complaining about opponent's unfair attemps to manipulate the ref...

what I liked, it was the rule that after 3 calls of "simultanèe" priority was assigned to one of the 2 athletes (the 1st was by draw, then it was 1 left and 1 right according to the natural sequence), so in case of a 4th call "simultanèe" the hit was going to someone in any case...I'd rather apply that rule also to today's sabre, because I can't stand those coward refs who always call that even 10 or more times in a row every time they do not have a really evident "winner" of the hit...

I couldn't find anything about the epic mess of the team bronze medal match in Seoul 1988 (guess who were involved? yes, you're right...the Italians were there :facepalm:), but here is part of the Los Angeles 1984 Team Gold Medal match between ITA and FRA...that's a good expample of how sabre was at the time...

It seems World Champs will be streamed in this page: http://sports.cctv.com/live/waicai6/index.shtml and Finals in Olympic Channel. I hope it works well, because Chinese streams usually present issues. We will check this evening!

Finally there won't be streaming for secondary colour pistes, so we couldn't see half matches of table of 64. For strong countries, it is not a big deal, but for Spanish fans is a pity we will not be able to watch majority of our fencers, because probably more than 50% of our team will lose in this round. Hopefully Llavador and Pereira can have a good day and reach at least T16 (I know Yulen would have to face Nikishin in T32, but he already defeated the Ukranian last year and he lost by one in Paris a few months ago).

    • I think the reason is that it's generally preferable to have a fast shooter in the 1st leg, and especially in the prone shooting, where Hofer is quite slow.   Now, I'm not saying I agree with the choice, because I don't. I think it's going to neutralize Giacomel's skiing skills in the 1st lap at least.   I guess the idea is to try and set a very fast pace in the 1st leg, which is usually quite tactical, but I'm afraid that's going to force Giacomel to risk too much because he will feel he has to make some time somehow.   Regardless, Italy must be on the podium tomorrow. I think that would be crucial for the following races as well. I think France is the clear favorite, but the other teams are not stronger than Italy on paper.
