Taekwondo Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Taekwondo Grand Slam qualification draw day 1

http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/competition/view.html?nid=139834&mcd=K12

it looks like more than 50% of participants are from China :yikes: you rarely can see a non-Asian athlete in the draw. this competition combined with December 2023 tournament will give 1 quota in each weight, there is a good chance Asian athletes win all those 8 quotas. it's more like Chinese national Champs plus some Koreans and some Iranians (mostly on the men's side)

I consider this a joke, especially as 8 qualify to Grand Slam.
in the past qualification was mainly via previous tournaments and ranking, now only 3 per category will get an invitation (really curious who will be that, someone from China/Korea?)

Even if the Europeans/Americans decide to participate in December they have no chance without points from this edition.

That's not entirely impossible, this event in April will lose 25% of its value comparing to the event in December. so if you win the gold in December and the guy who won gold (and silver) in April fails very early you still can qualify. it's not a completely impossible scenario.

the main event will be held 2-3 days later, I think those invitations will go to the athletes in location (meaning those participated at the qualifiers) mostly to guys from China/Korea but maybe I'm wrong.

Qualified athletes for the 2022 Grand Slam

http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/viewer_pdf/external/pdfjs-2.1.266-dist/web/viewer.html?file=http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/att_file/news/Top 8.pdf

22 quotas for China, 15 for Korea, 13 for Iran and 7 for Uzbekistan, 57 in total (almost 90% of the quotas) and only 6 for the rest of the world ! :d

we will see how they will distribute those 3 "Wild cards" per weight, still no news

this is more like a shortcut for the Olympic quota. we sent all of our best guys. no chance in the Olympic ranking. it's either this Grand Slam or we have to prepare for the worst (Asian Qualifiers)

There was some discussion that there will not be a quota via Grand Slam? I guess that is off the table?

I mean don’t have anything against GS, but to give it to China is a joke. No one wants to travel there. Korea would have been a better option.

Yes some coaches/national federations asked for this during the World Champs in Mexico but WT rejected the idea.

I think China will host GS as long as it exists. and when China didn't host it (because of COVID) nobody else did. the whole event exists because of Chinese sponsors. the prize money this year is not as big as the previous Olympic cycle. much lower actually. maybe that's a sign that the whole GS idea is not going that well.

They gave wild card to some athletes didn't participate in the qualifiers. it's a bit different tournament now with these higher ranks guys.

49kg: :GER Aydin, :ISR Semberg, :CHN Zuo

67kg: :ESP Castro, :SRB Perisic, :CHN Song
68kg: :TUR Recber, :UZB Rashitov, :CHN Liang, :CHN Cui
+80kg: :BRA Soares, :CHN Song

our 49kg girl Nassiri is already out because of the draw :(

first day gold medals go to :CHN Zuo , :CHN Song, :UZB Rashitov and :IRI Salimi

these guys will be in the front sit for the Olympic quota in December but still nothing is final yet. Rashitov doesn't even need it.

Salimi's gold medal was a total surprise. I barely even knew him before this event. but 68kg final was really disappointing, Bozorgi was leading Rashitov 6-1 with 5 seconds to go but then bang, 5pts kick to the head  I think our coach almost had a heart attack, almost the same happened in the +80kg final but Salimi somehow survived it.

2nd day draw with lots of new/big names

If I understand correctly there is a big difference to 2020. Back then If the first in the GS Ranking (or that NOC) has already qualified through Olympic ranking (Top 5) the quota goes to 6th in Olympic Ranking. now the quota goes to 2nd in GS ranking.

is that correct?

Yes I think so. they made it very clear in the IOC published qualification document.

https://stillmed.olympics.com/media/Documents/Olympic-Games/Paris-2024/Paris2024-QS-Taekwondo.pdf

Quote

If the quota place was obtained through the WT Grand Slam Champions Series, it will be reallocated to the NOC of the next highest ranked eligible athlete in the same weight category based on the WT merit Point Standing which reflected results including WT Grand Slam Champions Series of December 2023, respecting the maximum number of athletes per NOC specified in section B

but then again this PDF on WT website says something different
http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/viewer_pdf/external/pdfjs-2.1.266-dist/web/viewer.html?file=http://www.worldtaekwondo.org/att_file/documents/WT-Standing-Procedures-For-Grand-Slam-Champions-Series(01162023).pdf

Quote

There will not be any replacement quota for the Olympic Games from World Taekwondo Grand Slam Champions Series, when the first placed athlete of merit points standing is ranked within top five (5) of same weight category of WT Olympic ranking that reflected result until Grand Prix Final which held a year prior to the Olympic year.

I assume the priority goes to the IOC pdf file but who knows
