World ranked no 1 for Women, Fleury of Canada was unbeaten in canadian olympic trials until the final and the extra end. Now they will miss the worlds as well, not even reaching the playoffs in the Manitoba provincials.

She didn’t even make the top 3 in Manitoba despite the second and third ranked teams from Manitoba being absent (Team Jones because they are going to the Olympics and team Einarson as defending champions).

Fleury can still make World though, the top two ranked unqualified teams play-off for the final spot.

I know there's the Olympics and whatnot coming up, but this week is also the Scotties (the Canadian women's championship). Of course Jennifer Jones' team isn't competing, but it's still a great field. And to my complete amazement :NBR has started 5-0 (!!!!!), the best start ever for New Brunswick at the Scotties. This includes a win over the world number 1 ranked team Fleury (lets just ignore that Fleury herself had to miss the game due to COVID) and a win over team Homan (lets ignore that Homan isn't there because of the Olympics).

Huge news from the Scotties: :NBR has beaten :CAN! :NBR is now guaranteed at least third (they are in the 1-2 Page playoff game). Team Crawford is from my hometown, I’ve been to the curling club they curl out of.

Very good coverage of the Scottish Champs at the moment on the BBC - pictures, commentary etc.  There’s also coverage on the Scottish Curling YouTube channel but it’s in the supermarket car park tradition.

Brad Gushue and team will represent Canada at the mens worlds... likely their last tournament.

They did it with 3 members only as Mark Nichols tested positive for Covid earlier this week.

Team Gushue, who represented Canada at the Olympics, become the first team to win the Brier (the Canadian championship) in the same year where they represented Canada at the Olympics (they are the first ones to have the opportunity to compete in both IIRC).

What makes this especially impressive: third Mark Nichols tested positive for COVID after the round robin, so Team Gushue has played with only three players during the entire playoffs.
