Whom France was trying to copy Commonwealth Games , but they failed to spread
That's not exactly true. These games were set by the francophone organisation at the end of the 80's as first and foremost a cultural thing. never show much interest in them (there are zero media coverage here).
We had our own political Commonwealth Games. But there was only one edition in 1960 which was very orignaly called "Jeux de la Communauté" (no translation needed I think )
something exciting? yes, forthe combat sports fans those disciplines are exciting (and point fighting could be also for newcomers, more than the other disciplines under WAKO management...not only, there might be less "manipulation" than in the other events)
That's the important part. Combat sports fans are allready well served by the olympic program as it is. Adding Kickboxing would only marginally improving that. If you want to bring newcomers to these sports, only some form of MMA would do it.
I don't see what kickboxing would add to the olympics table ? Money ? No ; Fans ? Not really ? Something new and exciting ? No And it's not like you can have the sport at the olympics without adding a load of extra quotas.
Maybe if god-awful TWD was to be kicked out of the olympics (one man can only hope), they might find a way to remplace it, but that's it.
Italian Olympic Committee says that our target are 44 medals.
Yeah, we reach the italian NOC target !
I'm sorry, but as no one here seems to care enough to have set a target for our team, I have to steal the target from someone else. Hope, you don't mind.
Has anyone any news about the last badminton double quarter final? Stream is dead and score hasn't moved in 40 minutes or so. Still showed as 'in progress'
Was the point of this sport was to discover the least entertaining possible interration between a ball and two human beings ? If so, it was a great success.
the "Mecca" of Rink Hockey...when it really matters
U19 World Champs GMM ( vs )
Senior World Champs opener ( vs )
Well, yes, the argentinian team in big games. Fine... Rght now, the Spain-Mozanbique game is not doing much better than the France-Chile one earlier this afternoon
I was reading an ITW from the french rink hockey team coach. He seems to be very much against these 'Games' and would favored a return to the old RH World Cup. Can't be the only one thinking like that.
what all the swimming detractors need to understand, it's the fact that swimming, athletics and gymnastics are the symbol of the basic human activity...they remind to prehistoric life and the fight between man and nature...
moreover, they are the core of the core sports at the Olympics since the very first edition in 1896 (and they were present -in different form, but still- also in the ancient Greek Olimpiads)...
there's no chance the other sports can be compared to those 3 and ask for the same consideration...it will never happen, even with this IOC obsessed by the youth and urban sh*t (or, better, what they think it's youth and urban, but actually it's at least aged by today's youngsters if not even unknown by them)...
A 'swimming detractor' not convinced here. Swimming olympic program almost double up from 1964 to 1968. Coincidentally, it's also at that time that television (mainly american) gained importance and coincidentally again it also allowed the US to secure their top position at the medals table with more than 50 medals at the pool that year (lol, we can all imagine how people wearing red stuff thought about that at the time).
It's also interesting how the first olympic program was draw. Swimming was merely one section of the so called nautic sports (Part E) alongside rowing and yachting (sailing). Doesn't seem that core to me.
IMO, swimming as this second major olympic sport alongside athletics is a very artificial thing and only feels ok if you come from one these very few countries that can rack up medals at this sport every 4 years.
European Championships + Aquatics European Championships medal table after Day 2
Thanks, maybe it would be more interesting to count only the olympic events. I mean we had a podium today with 3 medals being awarded to the 3 only guys who made the trip to Rome...
maybe one day or another UCI will accept to get back to the good old 400m tracks (and you can find a lot of them in many European places...moreover, you can build football/rugby stadiums with that kind of track all around makin'it a lot less expensive as they would be multi purpose facilities)...
Lol, we barely build any new athletic track stadiums these days, we are definitely not going to build ones for track cycling ! Besides the few we still have left are in an awful state (in France at least, but I believe it's the same everywhere).
Track cycling used to be a popular sport. It isn't the case anymore and it ain't coming back. Today, it's just one of these sports that survives thanks to the olympics
They’re very expensive to maintain. Track cycling went out of fashion about 30 years ago & many old ones were lost. Recently it has become important again, but too late for the old tracks.
I wouldn't say it's getting important again. Just that it became critical for various national programs to have at least an handfull of tracks available.
Drop the sport from the olympics, and it will be gone entirely in a generation.
The interview of the swiss guy running the show is interesting, I didn't know they had an athletes cap (4700). He says that if the event was to grow further than that, they would have to build an athletes village.
Possibly, the future of these games championships would be be to split it further between multiple hosts. This way, it would leave the opportunity for federations to move wherever they wish, you won't have to build anything, and you pretty much can add as many sports as you want.
From a telespectator point of view, it wouldn't change much anyway.
Is this 'alive' in your countries in terms of visibility?
Kinda. We will have daily coverage on our public television, but mostly on a secondary channel. For sports outside of athletics, it will make a massive difference with the coverage they usualy get during their Euros.
I don't watch TV outside of sport, so I don't really know if they promoted it in a big way these last days.
On today's l'Equipe there were seven pages presenting the event.
BTW: European Athletics is fucking retarded. They believe they won't lose anything by going solo in the future. Sure because, we all know, the athletics world championships are as popular as athletics during the olympics
