They had so much time to give all pros coronavirus on purpose, wait for them recover, and finally have them race without this mindless approach in which tons of tests get wasted for each race.

It should be noted that it’s not a guarantee that every rider would survive Covid-19 if they contracted it. The odds are most likely in their favor, but no medical professional could be 100% certain that every rider would be okay.

Broken pelvis and end of season for Evenepoel. It's a miracle that's all, so I hope he'll count his blessings, so to speak.

Damn, I really don’t want to imagine the force required to break your pelvis. I hope he’s able to make a recovery.

Gronevegen‘s behavior wasn’t egregious or abnormal, until he gave that final little elbow. That’s what really pisses me off. That contact was purposefully malicious. It would be one thing if he moved over to block the other and it ended there, but forcing the other rider to the barrier and then finishing him off with the elbow is completely unacceptable.

I wonder how many people voluntarily go and watch that knowing his life is still in danger. The TV director showing replays (multiple, from all kinds of angles) within minutes, while there were and still are fears for his life, was just disgusting. That person needs to be fired, if you don't know how to do a job (and it is a rather universal thing in sports to not show these kind of replays until more is known about someone's condition), do something else.

So the UCI punishing the rider who caused the accident is an overreaction, but being outraged the TV Director showed the accident isn’t?

I’m not trying to defend anyone, but let’s not attack the TV Director for doing their job. I’m certain he (or she) knew just about as much as we did about the condition of the riders involved. Also, these crashes at the finish are somewhat commonplace in cycling, and this on par with the coverage I’ve seen of similar incidents. I’m actually thankful they showed the crash from a couple of angles, because I can actually understand the circumstances of the crash.

So I learn this happened at Laguna Seca Raceway.

The Olympics will end at Fuji Speedway. :mumble:

One of my TOC stages ever! Toms became my second favorite after Sagan because of his success in California. Plus, he came back from that horrific fall he suffered in years past.

Not the only time the most prestigious competition doesn't budge for another one :p

They could move the road races to the end of the games...

For once that could have some influence, considering the Olympic course is so mountaineous you'd expect strong climbers instead of one-day specialists.

The course would be perfect for the Sagan of the mid-2010s. It’s a shame the Tour De France won’t budge because the Tokyo course does look epic. In fairness, I would have been okay with a repeat of the Tokyo 1964 finish too.

Remco Evenepoel cancelled his Muur Challenge after the media made a big deal out of it.

Why? People can still be allowed to do things on their own. If people show up to watch (after being told/asked/warned not to) arrest their ass (or more realistically, just have them leave).

In the Bongo Natnael Tesfatsion showed he, like most African riders, still has a whole lot to learn in terms of tactics...throwing away the GC win by one second because of not paying attention in the intermediate sprints

To be fair, most African riders are more concerned about the Olympics, World Championships, and African Games where things like that don’t exist.

Sagan confirmed his interest in starting at the Olympics. It should also be also his last race in the next season 2020. He will have a really busy first 6 months including the classics, Giro, Tdf and Tokyo OG.

He flirted with the idea to compete in Tokyo like it was in Rio in MTB, but then decided to try the classic road race, even if the profile will be too difficult, he said the Tokyo road race will be his very last race of the 2020 season so why not try it and put a "vanavermaet" there :p

His season´s plan will be from 26th January Vuelta a San Juan in :ARG followed by high mountain training camp, then the Classics followed by another training camp - Giro - another training camp - TdF and Tokyo road race.

So after 10 consecutve years he´ll not compete at the World Champs.

Oh and I know Fuzhou is not exactly a great, important race, but still you don't often see Mongolian winners in pretty international races. Jambaljamats Sainbayar won today :cheer:

Mongolia had a reach cyclist that one a junior track world title 2 or 3 years ago. There’s potential there for great performances. I’m pretty sure this isn’t him though.

RIP Tour of California :(

It was always fun to watch a handful of world class riders fight with a whole bunch of local heroes while being ready to sleep. Tradition, if you will.

Saddest news I’ve seen all week . It was a yearly tradition of mine. It’s one of only a few cycling races I religiously. I have great childhood memories of watching races, of meeting the riders. It’s a shame that other kids won’t be able to do those things.
Money ruins everything. Nothing has ever improved with money. Shit day to be a sports journalist in the US. I just get more and more tired of this country by the day. I really hope my generation brings change in the next few years.
