Melonade reacted to De_Gambassi in Only one Athlete per Nation rule: Keep it? Drop it?
With the exception of fencing, every combat sports (boxing, wrestling, judo, TKD + weightlifting) only allow one athlete per country and per category during the olympics. You have to go back to 1924, to find a combat sport.(boxing) that allowed multiple entries per nation and per category.

Same with the "boat sports" (cannoeing, rowing, sailing), which also allow only one athlete per nation and per boat. Here, you only need to go back to 2004 , to find one of these sport allowing multiple entries per boat (cannoeing slalom).

It is also worth noting, that with the exception of women boxing and the longer boats (rowing eights, k4), these sports allready have more entrants that other sports that do allow multiple entries per country such as trampoline or women's BMX (16).

Personnaly, I'm against this policy (oh... the surprise). Generally speaking, I think the overall international representation should take the back seat during the olympics and the focus to be put on the better athletes regardless of their nationality or continent.

For instance, back in 2012, the future C1 slalom gold medallist (Tony Estanguet) had to beat the then current world champion (Denis Gargaud... future gold medal winner in Rio) during the french nationals just to make to London. Doest it makes sense to had one these two gold contenders stay at home to make room for a kazakh or chinese that very few cared about ? Does it make a better event ? Does it make for a better publicity for the sport ? I'm sure @hckosice could share some similar stories.

Not every athletes will have has much patience, and many will drop the sport due to lack of oppurtunities, some will change nationallity, and in case of combat sports, some will go through hell just to make to a different weight category.

I believe that you only need to relax this policy just a bit to make this whole qualification process much smoother and utimately to have a better sporting event .By exemple, if you allow only the top three nations in salom to have two entries per boat, that only means 12 athletes. An other exemple, in judo, you could allow two entries as long both athletes are ranked in the top 8 of their respective category, which would mean 15 athletes at the moment, etc.

I think there is much to win here for a little cost.

    Thoughts ?

Yeah, that was just fantastic. 1000m walk vs 1400m run, brilliant. Can't wait for the 130m (human) vs 250m (horse).

Dear Lord, just when I think people will finally get it, things get worse.

Transgender people are not an aberration so that they need their own category. They have to completely "reprogram" their bodies through hormone treatment. I know a transgender woman who said the hormones "ate" her muscles and she feels like her body is much weaker now. It's not like at the Olympics an 100+ kg weightlifter could ever put on a wig and compete among women because he thinks this will be okay.

Besides, hyperandrogenism is a condition that still needs to be studied deeply. Not even scientists know for sure the effects of this condition for the sport, but this still doesn't stop people like Jozwik and Sharp to be stupid and harmful in interviews speaking about what they know nothing of. Take Dutee Chand for example. If high testosterone levels had been enough, she would have been among the best in the world by now.

We will try to work on that on the future and I agree with you something has to be improved under this point of view. But just as a reminder to every user, you can (and should) report posts if you find them racist. Even when we will have a better organized moderation team, moderators are not reading the threads 24 hours, and when you make a report a notifications will arrive to moderators and the post can be checked more quickly. I have received 3-4 reports during the World Championships and all of them have been dealt pretty quickly.

Also (I am not talking to you but in general) we should differentiate between racist comments and comments made by users we can not stand. For the latest ones, you should all use the "Ignore" feature this forum allows everyone to use (apart from me, even though I would love to be able to use that function too )

I don't really follow athletics, but as a reminder to myself in case I decide to follow it someday, I should never come close to some people discussing the results here.

I've seen some sexist, LGBT-phobic, and apparently racist comments, and I'm surprised some of you just let that slip as if it's nothing. It's one thing when you are not a huge fan of such and such athlete. It's a different thing altogether when you purposely misgender people or when your remarks about someone might come off as racist.

In 2013 in Marrakech he already had a 3:33, in 2014 he ran some races in MAR/FRA/ESP/BEL (including 3:34 and 3:33), in 2015 only one 800m (1:47) and one 1500m (3:33), both in Belgium, and last year he ran these few races:

Nope, Nothing. I've been looking in historical tables and results of the volleyball in our territory in the 70s years. And I did found nothing. Absolutely nothing, Not a single mention of any special result, nor any club that would approach the mentioned name. Moreover, such a city or village does not exist and did not existed in the communist era. So it's a fake report.

    Sorry Guys
