That is not as ridiculous as people make it sound. If you've got an absolute emergency situation, and you are in desperate need of a medicine...and there are hundreds (and soon maybe thousands) of people basically just waiting to die, it is at some point not entirely impossible to understand testing these medicines on people for whom there is basically no hope already anymore. It doesn't make it any less sad, but there could well be a scenario where that is pretty much the only option left - apart from waiting for a way, way longer time and by doing so losing thousands and thousands of more people.
