  1. African record for Coetze, I believe? And still not even anywhere close to Peirsol super suit (or pants, in his case) time
  2. Time to add the 400 meters in the slow/alternative strokes, that'd bring Corbeau gold for sure and finally give a chance to those who specialize in the slower strokes but need more time to get going, they're treated unfairly now
  3. A bit more about Van Wijk: she spent a larger part of her childhood in hospitals than at school, as a matter of speech. Born with a rare growth syndrome, she's had scoliosis and kidney cancer, problems with an assymetric body and lots of bullying. Also tried basketball due to her length, but she kept breaking bones, so that didn't work. To think she's still only 20 years old..
  4. To be fair, Van Wijk is so tall she basically only needs to swim 95 meters (she's closing in on 2 meters due to a growth syndrome)
  5. Oh wow, that world title for Steenbergen is a lot more valuable than the one of last year Van Wijk of all people being this close to a medal
  6. We start the evening of with the main final of the women's program, let's go
  7. Yuck factor’: eating insects rather than meat to help the planet is failing, study finds
  8. Not more than one out of, say, the Central African Republic, North Korea, Eritrea, Russia, Syria, Palestine, Somalia or Sudan, ouch USA is not on my wish list, but I do think I'd prefer it over those others at the moment
  9. You're lucky if for that money the pump even starts working here
  10. Says something about the competitiveness of an event when the clear winner is entirely disappointed because of not breaking the WR
  11. The whole area in Pakistan has apparently been extremely warm and dry, leading to lots and lots of rockfall the entire season and a lot of climbing expeditions turning back or being outright cancelled. There's also a rumour a wrong move with the rope may have caused it, but no idea what they based that on.
  12. Thanks, I was still gonna watch that Still in favour of sticking to the sports the threads are about, or use spoilers
  13. Says a whole lot about her..
  14. Never thought I'd be talking in this thread about the person who was basically my favourite athlete in the world, across all sports, for her entire senior career Rest in peace, Laura Dahlmeier
  15. Another lobsided pair of semi's: Yu makes it with a 6th place in her semi.
  16. What do you mean, Russian? Listening to the English language commentators on things like Eurovisionsports suggests they don't exist and certainly aren't Russian, "the individual neutral athlete is coming on strong, next to the Australian, but the individual neutral athlete might come up a bit short and it's silver for the individual neutral athlete!"
  17. Yeah, good luck getting any non-Polish commentator to pronounce any Polish name correctly
  18. Oh wow, Italian gold. @copravolley can finally relax a bit
  19. Thank you, Dutch commentator. "THERE'S A MEDAL COMING!", 10 meters before the finish, followed by De Groot finishing in 7th (and never having really been in contention).
  20. Oh, by the way, the overall lack of excitement in this final took a bit of my attention from that, but yeah, that's the 3rd fastest time ever and indeed the fastest ever in non-supersuits
  21. Well that was one of the least interesting finals so far
  22. Also because it says this: One of her companions, identified as Kraus Marina Eva, was still stuck at the site, he said. While every other report so far has said Kraus had made it back to base camp (or was at least on her way), together with the aforementioned Thomas Huber.
  23. Yes, people like you and I are a lot less adventurous (and brave, I think). Everyone wants to enjoy life, some do that by spending lots of time on learning how to cook amazingly, others by writing books, training for marathons and so on, and yet others love adventure and experiencing things most people don't even dare dream of. I saw some ridiculous comments on social media that were along the lines of "well she was kinda looking for it". First of all, those people simply have the empathy level of a brick wall, absolute morons, and second: I guess 'living life' for them means watching Netflix on the sofa.
  24. Her ex-boyfriend at the time (a few years ago), to be precise, he was climbing together with his then-girlfriend in Argentina. In a documentary about Dahlmeier's climbing two years or so ago, she was clearly still affected by that, understandably, even though they weren't together anymore at the time. That documentary also made very clear that staying out of the mountains was in no way an option for her, she seems to have loved it even way, way more than biathlon. Every time she talked or posted about it, it was clear that the mountains and everything it entails were her number one love in life. As the German news said yesterday at the end of their piece about the situation: "Staying down below was simply never an option."
  25. Exactly. The rescue attempt (let's name it that for now) is being led by Thomas Huber, kind of a German legend in alpinism and mountaineering, apparently. Pakistani media have also reported that Dahlmeier managed to communicate with her climbing partner right after the accident, but it's unclear in which sense (shouting, radio, whatever). Also, take it with a grain of salt for now, I fear. Besides, that was now two freezing nights ago.
