El Greco 21 got a reaction from rafalgorka in Olympic Games 2020 League
I am thinking of creating a point system, to create a kind of a league counting all olympic sports results effecting in one table. My idea is this:
for every Olympic final teams will be awarded points as follows:
1st-25pts, 2nd-18pts, 3rd-15pts, 4th-8pts, 5th-5pts, 6th-3pts, 7th-2pts, 8th-1pt.
For sports that there is no official ranking for positions 5-8, teams that reached quarter finals will be awarded 5pts, as the 5th position takes.
In order to make it more "fair" I think to have a multiplier depending on each country's team size and population.
I will create an accumulate table containing both numbers and I will create one single ranking depending the positions of each country in those two categories. For example if country A is 5th in population but 10th in team size, that makes 15 in the final ranking. From that final ranking each teams points, in every final, will be multiplied as follows:
Teams ranked 1-20: x1
teams ranked 21-50:x2
teams ranked 51-100:x3
teams ranked 101-150: x4
teams ranked 150 and so: x5
Tell me what you think, and maybe someone has a better idea. Improvements needed, and maybe someone would like to help to the calculations. I never done it before, I believe I could make it!

El Greco 21 got a reaction from Makedonas in Greece National Thread

Wow that would be a shame. I know in other sports it is an issue in Greece (basketball for example there was the issue with Pitino being chosen as national team coach while he was coaching Panathinaikos), and normally I would agree that they shouldn't do both. However Vlachos gets good results with both teams lately and most of our national team players play for Olympiakos anyways so I think it actually helps that everyone is together all the time.

Yes, you are right about Nikolaidis. It is a matter of schedule. The only sure thing that happens in the last days every time is team sports, and that's why usually we don't have medal chances
-
El Greco 21 reacted to Makedonas in Your Tokyo 2020 Schedule
I agree, usually we don't have any events the last two days of the Olympics or we only have events with no chances of medals, so this was cool. Had our team lost in the quarterfinals like they usually do, we would not have had any events the last two days at all.

El Greco 21 got a reaction from Makedonas in Your Tokyo 2020 Schedule
As always I am a bit nostalgic every final day of each Games, and therefor I try to watch as much of the games as possible and then I rest. I hate watching replays after the closing ceremony, I need to have at least one year off before I watch them again.
Anyway, I am really happy to see that the very ultimate game of the whole competition is the Water Polo men's final between Greece and Serbia (which is the only final of men for team sports in the last day).
So the whole planet (at least those feeling the same nostalgic like me, trying to live every moment of the Games till the end) will tune in to watch Greece playing the most important game of our history in water polo. That's pretty good feeling! Go Greece!

I see in the schedule that the game Greece-Serbia is the very last one of the Games. So everyone will be watching.
Go Greece!

Day 14 Report
Welcome to the Day 14 of the 2020 Summer Olympics League Report. Yes, after exclusively working on this league silently via the Google Sheets spreadsheet, I am back on posting on this thread. The burnout just keeps growing as I had to delay the changes in Report style for 3 days and this post will be pretty lackluster but I may just be able to make it a full and extensive Report for Day 15. Ok, let's get into it.
Full Standings (changed the countries' names in the total standings to:
green, if they have a chance of winning the League, or
red, if they don't have a chance to be at the top at the end of it all):
docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NiyTqxwllnpaL3jr_ziLk4UTxz6QuVU6sQNjZ8FVRUU/edit?usp=sharing
Very short report of the countries that can still win the League and how much more medals and points each of them can add to their total medal/points tally
Australia (leader of total standings):
Minimum 2844 pts (2817 + 27)
GB (2nd in total standings):
Maximum plus 16 Golds, 6 Silvers and 3 Bronzes (2530 + 1088 = 3618 pts max)
USA (3rd):
Maximum plus 23 Golds, 5 Silvers, 5 Bronzes, a 4th and a 5th Place (2169 + 735 = 2904 pts max)
Netherlands (4th):
Maximum 11 Golds, 4 Silvers, a Bronze and a 5th place (2145 + 1089 = 3234 pts max)
Again, I am very much hoping I can serve you a packed Report of the penultimate competition day and I hope you hope for that too. Good night and I'll see you later today my time (I'm, again, hoping). Bye!

Greece faces serious troubles with bushfires, last night was horrible. Greek captain Fountoulis, in his post-game interview said:
"I want to say sorry (to apologise) to all Greeks for our joy"
I think it is one of the best comments ever said after such a historic moment during such a disastrous situation.

Day 7 Standings
Hello and welcome to the points tallies of the 7th day of competition and the total standings summary after Day 7. I may not finish the Day 5 + 6 Report today, but even though you probably wouldn't care about me completing it, I still want to finish it because of me being a slight perfectionist. Also, sorry for not posting this post earlier, as I woke up feeling pretty lazy and later just wanted to enjoy the Olympics and not stress myself out trying to update the standings the moment the official results are up. Day 7 Report
Welcome to the final competition day of Week 1 of the 2020 Summer Olympics League. It has been an eventful day like any other competition one, full of rises and falls, strange occurences and surpirsing performances. Australia kept their lead of the League, but lost a decent-sized chunk of the said lead to GB, who massively outperformed its former colony (kinda). The Day 7 victory went to New Zealand, and how they got it will be talked about in...
The Fight for the Top (Day 7 Edition)
Competition technically began with Badminton, but the medal fights began in Rowing and that's where this segment ends, because New Zealand absolutely destroyed the field with 2 golds in Men's Eight and Women's Single Sculls and also a silver in Women's Eight. This was enough for New Zealand to keep the lead for the rest of the day. A pretty boring day for this segment, but let's move on.
The Great 8
Here I talk about the Top 8 in the total standings and their Day 7 performance, but this time, it's slightly different. Tell me if you like this type of reporting more or not, also give critisizms and recommendations as I will really benefit from them.
This day for the Great 8 was varying degrees of good. One team that really showed up yesterday is Team GB. A gold from Bethany Shriever in Women's BMX Cycling plus 2 silvers and 3 bronzes contributed to their second best daily points tally of 234, only behind the amazing Day 3 one of 270, which was what the team really needed to challenge for the League lead, because Team USA, the Dutch and Australia had very much below average days (based on points), with the Aussies earning the smallest daily points tally in this year's Olympics (disregarding Day 1 because then they didn't score any points).
China had their best day yet (again, based on points) with 194 points, which was definitely helped to achieve by the 1-2 finishes in table tennis, badminton and trampoline gymnastics - clear dominance, which helped them to rise ahead of Italy to 5th.
Speaking of the "Pizza Land", they would probably want to forget yesterday in its entirety, as they harnessed a record low 30 points, very out of character considering they were very consistently good before and out of the 15 they earned before multipliers were applied, 12 (4/5 of the Day 7 points tally) came from a bronze in the Women's Individual Archery from Lucilla Boari and 3 came from Rowing and Fencing. A piss-poor performance for the Italians. The rest of the Great 8 also had below average results, except for the Russians (Russian Olympic Commitee-ians), who did very damn well by earning 2 golds, 3 silvers and a bronze, them and some random event points totalling up to a decent 128 day point tally which helped them rise from 12th to 7th.
In conclusion, an OK day for the Great 8, both current and the one after Day 6, and that OK-ness helped create a tight battle for the spots in the Top 8, with Russia (ROC) in 7th and Hungary in 13th only seperated by 74 points, which is funnily a smaller gap than the one between Italy in 6th and Russians in 7th. Everything is still up for grabs, just countries have to put in the effort to grab it.
The Other Guys and Gals
This section is simular to the Great 8 of today, except it features the rest of the field instead of the Top 8 of the total standings. Let's get into it, shall we?
The Czechs are doing very well, as they became the only nation of which their day points tally was made up of 2 gold medals (25 points each) and nothing else. The gold medalists were the canoeist Jiri Prskavec in Men's K1 Slalom and judoka Lukas Krpalek in Men's Judo +100kg discipline. The nation you can't describe as "doing very well" tho is Hungary. It's athletes yesterday got just over half of Day 6's points tally with 6.
I wanted to talk about the Athletics and how well the mid-African countries have been doing, but accidentally hit the "home" button in the browser on my phone and lost everything I wrote. F*ck.
So that was the Day 7 of this year's Summer Olympics League Report. The day wasn't any different in concept: ups and downs, surprises, record breaking, the usual stuff, but just like any other day, it was way more different if you looked deeper into it. Hopefully you enjoyed today's twist on the report formula and if you didn't or felt it probably needed something to improve, let me know in the thread. Critizism and recommendations help immensely. Thanks for reading and see you later today (if you don't live in America (the continent)). Bye!

El Greco 21 reacted to Makedonas in Rowing at the Summer Olympic Games 2020
I agree, it's been a problem for many of our rowers. Most are super young compared to other nations, go to the Olympics once and then are never seen from again. It's a cyclical problem and hopefully this will bring more attention and money to the sport, or at least to Ntouskos so we can see him in Paris and beyond.

I will post more trivia after all the medal events are over and I may lump today's and yesterday's league competition talk into one Day 2 + 3 Report, you'll see if it will be like that later. El Greco 21 reacted to Donce in Olympic Games 2020 League
DAY 1 REPORT
Welcome to the first daily report of the 2020 Olympics League! The first competition day went pretty well with lots of ups and downs and random out-of-nowhere rises to the top of the standings. A total of 43 NOCs earned at least a point today with Kosovo as the "winner" of Day 1 and current total standing leader.
The Fight for the Top
The league competition day started with a Chinese shooter Quin Yang's victory and Switzerland's rise to 1st place in the standings post-multipliers. Then Iran took the lead after it's shooter Javad Foroughi won his discipline and the NOC held on to the lead until Ecuador's Richard Carapaz won the men's cycling road race and let his country's Olympic team go up to 1st place. But Ecuador's reign ended in around 2 hours when the Kosovian judoka Distria Krasniqi won the NOC's only second Olympic gold and gave them the lead in the standings and, despite the efforts of other NOCs to end their glory, Kosovo took the day "victory" at the end of it and carries on it's lead to Sunday.
The Great 8
This segment of the daily reports will talk about the Top 8 Olympic teams of the total standings and their work throughout the day, so let's begin!
8th: Belgium
Belgium today competed in 2 points giving events and did pretty well in both, earning 5th in the Weightlifting Women's -49kg Group A and in the total standings and earning a silver medal in the Men's Road Cycling Race thanks to Sterckx and van Aert respectively, earning 22 points pre- and 88 points post-multipliers, just edging out their Benelux buddies Netherlands. Other than that, not really that much to say, except "Good luck!"
7th: China
China have been above and beyond the best team yesterday (or today, belongs where you live) with 3 golds and 1 bronze to their tally and a couple of top 8 appearances in other disciplines too. Pre and post-multipliers their points tally today stays the same: 91. Unbelievable for a team with no outside help and considering the fact that some other big in both team size and population countries struggled badly to even earn points today.
6th: Italy
Italy had a pretty poor start to the day, not earning a single point, but they had some in the pipeline and they helped. A ton. Italy is currently sitting in the medal tally with a gold and a silver, add in some nice points finishes and it is currently running with 49 points before and 98 after the multipliers. Italy friendly ripped it's Eurovision "Big Five" buddies into pieces today, but it's only the beggining and the other four can always backfire, so Italy must continue the decent results.
5th: Ecuador
Richard Carapaz.
4th: Hungary
Same with Italy, they've had a poor start with points in the pipeline and the team ended the day with a gold from Aron Szilagyi in Men's Fencing Individual Sabre and a 5th from Omar Salim in Taekwondo Men's -58kg to their name, totalling up to 29 points and 116 post-multipliers. An excellent way to start before the aquatics kick in to this league.
3rd: Serbia
Serbia is currently the only team in the top 5 of the standings to not have a gold medal yet, instead benefiting from a silver from Mikec in Men's Shooting 10m Air Pistol and a bronze in Taekwondo Women's -49kg from Bogdanovic, adding up to 30 points and a whopping 120 after the multiplier treatment, only a 7th place away from taking the lead from what I think are their biggest enemies. Again, nothing else to say, let's move on to
2nd: South Korea
Unbelievable push by them, 1 gold in the Archery Mixed Team and 2 bronzes and a massive 61 point tally today and 122 after multipliers are applied. South Korea managed to take advantage of the disciplines with a gold medal game today as they were pretty favouring to them and China and that's why they are 1-2 in the pre-multiplier points tally. They will probably fall in the standings later in the 'lympics but the sign of that happening isn't there.
1st: Kosovo
Distria Krasniqi. Yes, I reused the same joke as before. Cry about it. /s
And that concludes the Great 8 segment, now time for the announcement moment.
I am converting the standings to Google Sheets to make them more convenient for me and more detailed for you. I will still post the top 10 of both the day and the total standings with the country/state flags together with some fun trivia too, but the rest only stay in the Sheets. Hopefully you like this idea and this report and if you don't, you can give your critizisms or/and recommendations to improve the delivery of this whole thing on this thread.

El Greco 21 got a reaction from Donce in Olympic Games 2020 League

I agree, I've been saying that for a few months now. I think he has a good shot to take a medal. He's done very well post-pandemic and the men's single sculls lost a few big names like Manson and Synek.

Happy "this league will technically start only in around 8 hours" moment!
As I said, I will give you the format of the standings posts in this one post. Hopefully you like it and if you don't, you can tell your critiques or if you have some, recommendations on this very thread. Ok, rambling over, let's get to the format!

5x:
Other NOCs
Also also, I want to propose a change in the points system (pick one of these two Greco to either replace yours as the universal points or let me utilize one of them in race disciplines while yours will stay as the knockout tournament points system or none or both):
1st:
1st earns 25 points,
2nd earns 18,
3rd earns 12,
4th earns 9,
5th earns 6,
6th earns 4,
7th earns 2,
8th earns 1
2nd:
1st earns 25 points,
2nd earns 18,
3rd earns 12,
4th earns 6,
5th earns 4,
6th earns 3,
7th earns 2,
8th earns 1
They give a bigger reward for getting into the final of a knockout tournament or 2nd over 3rd in a race discipline.
Anyways, see you tomorrow, or today, if questions, critiques or recommendations arise!

El Greco 21 got a reaction from Makedonas in Rowing at the Summer Olympic Games 2020
Greek Stefanos Ntouskos seemed in a pretty good shape in his first race. He had the chance for an easy race, to get more familiar with the venue and to hold up his power for the next races. Hopefully he will have the same chance on Sunday, and then to give his all in the last two races. I understand that the fact that he won easily, or that he had the second best time of all qualifiers is not a legit sign that he is going for a medal, but who knows? For whoever watched the shape he was in, and how with few ropes gaining more meters, maybe we have a good shot here for a medal.

El Greco 21 reacted to Donce in Olympic Games 2020 League
Hello guys, I will do the live updated standings for @El Greco 21 as he can't do them himself. I'll post the format of how the updated standings will get to you here later but you won't have to wait long for it. Also, sorry if I seem a little shady, I am a slight Olympic fanatic like most of you all, but I only found out about this site a couple of weeks back and I am also not a big fan of just talking about sport and the Games, so when I found out about this fun idea and also that the guy who came up with it can't do live updates, I created this account a week ago and asked if I can do them for him, he allowed me and here I am (I don't really think I needes his permission, but I did ask for it just in case). Hopefully this can make me more positively known on this site
