This is a big thing the US has done much better than Canada for years now: they will pick the best players, even if they are young, even if they are still in the NCAA.

I do hope there is a reckoning with how the women’s team is run, because they have consistently been the second best program in the world for almost two decades, and a somewhat lucky Olympic wins in 2014 and the team performing very well in 2018 and 2022 have sort of covered that up.

I mean they’ve looked terrible all season. Silver may actually be a result worth celebrating for this team.

I’m not sure what I hate the most, grammatical gender - like seriously why the fuck is a medal female - or the fact it makes perfect sense to me (and is like nails on a chalkboard when someone uses the wrong gender) because I’m a native French speaker xD Many people learning French as a second language have asked how I memorized various noun’s genders and it’s like… duno, for every noun one gender sounds correct and the other one sounds like you’re drowning puppies.

The more I sit on it the more I’m happy Moltzan and Wiles won a medal. Both steady names on the World Cup for ever that haven’t broken through with a win yet. Having an Olympic bronze medal feels right for both of them (and will definitively mean a lot more to them than it would have for Johnson and Shiffrin)

Something that is much better in freestyle skiing and snowboarding park and pipe events - the judges aren’t picked by their national federation so they don’t have to play favourite. Now don’t get me wrong, the judging in those events is far from perfect, the judges absolutely have their biases and they make mistakes, but despite being almost entirely "vibes based" judging in those sports still manages to feel more impartial than the segment scores in figure skating. Edit: another good thing about the judging of those events is that the judges are in constant communication with the athletes, coaches (and even the more plugged-in TV commentators) so everyone can understand the criteria they are being judged on.

Yes to the rest but her falling three times today is probably an issue with her blades or skates. It’s uncharacteristic for her to fall that much. As for the lack of advancement, got extremely unlucky and (by my understanding of the rules) the officials got it correct. Kind of hard to write that rule in balanced way sadly.
