MedalChampion reacted to Bailer in Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 Medal Count
Time for more personal and detailed predictions:
will have it hard this time.
I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.
We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.
It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:
Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.
We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.
I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.

Two weeks before the Games officially begin, time to give my final predictions on the medal standings.
will beat and win the medal table at the WOG for the first time in 100 years. All the (absurd) retirements of elite Norge athletes last season will have its consequences and they will drop to second.
will my bold pick to return to the top 3 after their horrendous Beijing performance, when it comes to Gold medals.
Germany will slip down and will have less than 9 golds for the first time in 50 years. Depending on how the chips fall in some sports, they could even be outside the top 5.
Home team of will have their best Olympics in some, better than Torino, but it still won't be enough to get into the top 5.

MedalChampion reacted to Federer91 in Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024 Medal Count
Some observations on a few other nations.
New Zealand continue their leadership in the category of "Most wins and medals compared to the population and territory of the country". Their sporting success and consistency every Summer Olympics is admirable.
Netherlands officially confirmed their status as a member of the "Big Boys Club". Second consecutive Summer Games with over 30 medals, but with a better conversion into Golds and 6th place in the table. In Tokyo they were 7th. Add to that the last 3 Winter ones, where they were 5, 5 and 6th and it shows how they have steadily risen in the ranks.
Sure, the majority of their medals came from cycling, rowing and athletics, but that just means they are perfectly escalating in the traditionally strong sports for them. Know what you are good at.
Uzbekistan also had their best Games ever and so much better than in Tokyo. Their stronghold is boxing, but also have done very good in the other combat sports. Once again the motto of "know what you are good at". I think they were slightly pushed in some boxing matches, but in general their fighters are amongst the best in this version of boxing.
Canada is also steadily improving, but unlike and their progress is seen in a large variety of sports. Sure, they have a superstar like McIntosh who brought many of the swimming medals, but i was watching a number of other sports and they had Canadians fighting for top positions everywhere. Sports, which you wouldn't associate with Canada in the past years. Don't know what has changed, but they have broaden their sporting horizon. If things continue like this, by LA 28 they would be in the - - - fight.
Also with the US being hosts, they will have a much easier path in the qualifications without the Americans, so their delegation will be 350-400 in 2028 i reckon.

South Korea recovered well after a poor 2020 while France benefited greatly from being the host nation. The Netherlands and Uzbekistan see their increase investment in sport yield good results.

Obviously Russia was going to have the least amount of golds, even accounting for they did not win a single gold. Despite having similar amount of medals as 2020, Great Britain just couldn't convert them to gold this time. The same can be said for Brazil. Japan loses out in their host nation boost while economic troubles continues to hurt Cuba.

France with the host boost saw a huge jump in total medals. Despite only getting 1 more gold medal compared to 2020, the United States wins an additional 13 medals. As with the gold medals, South Korea saw a nice increase in total medals as well. Uzbekistan and Australia saw nice increases. North Korea is only here because they did not participate in 2020. One can only imagine their increase had they attempted to qualify during the entire period as oppose to the second half.

Russia got banned and lost out on almost all their medals. Again, Japan lost its host boost. Ukraine suffered from the war while the other nations face either economic issues or returned to the mean after a great 2020.

For the first time ever there isn't an European nation in the Top4. The Russian ban + Great Britain underperforming + France not reaching their full potial at home... weakest European performance at the Olympic Games, in the "capital of Europe" of all places.

Ireland had their best ever Olympic Games in Paris finishing in 19th place on the final medals table with 4 golds and 3 bronze medals.
It surpassed all of my expectations and Paris will have a very special place in my heart with lots of beautiful memories. I got to experience the Olympics in person for the first time in my life and it did not disappoint, I loved every minute of it and the atmosphere was wonderful.

This is number of sports China participated in from 2000 until 2024:
2000 - 28,
2004 - 28
2008 - 28
2012 - 23
2016 - 26
2020 - 30
2024 - 33
That's one of the reasons for my statement.

At least Finland is very high up the world happiness ranking, even without Olympic medals.

By the way if it stays 40-40 with golds (which is probably the case) what would have made the difference?
Maybe for
China: Imane Khalif box final (could they somehow challenge that?)
US: err, that high jump

These are objective calculations that we have the most 4th and 5th places (5th place in judo is the first place behind the podium). On paper we should win about 45 medals here - that's what the bookmakers' predictions indicated before the games. But personally, I prefer gold in volleyball than 4-5 bronze in track cycling or archery.

Guys, there are books that have the bet for Most winning Gold Medal in Olympic.
What happens to the money if you either pick US or China. Its crazy lol. Its unthinkable. The books might eat both side of money?

I think it's over now. Valente is going to win the Omnium and regardless of the wrestling final, the US will be first on Silvers. Another last day steal just like in Tokyo.
