Fourth gold for Spain

Men’s team concludes a historic season

Spain’s golden season continues with the men’s national team winning the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Division II Group B on home ice in Granada.

The senior team’s success means the Spaniards have picked up four gold medals this season, securing promotions for the men’s U18 and U20 teams and the senior women’s roster. No other country, at any level of IIHF competition, has managed a comparable medal haul, with Spain ending its campaign with four golds from a possible five. All the successful teams were playing in Division IIB of their respective competitions.

The latest triumph came on home ice in Granada. The Andalusian city hosted the Winter Universiade in 2015, but it has a greater sporting tradition in bullfighting and football. This week, though, it had a chance to enjoy a glut of goals from a Spanish team determined to bounce straight back to Division IIA after relegation 12 months ago. The host nation rattled in 49 goals in five games, allowing just six, as it powered to top spot ahead of New Zealand thanks to a 6-4 success when the teams met.

As the seedings suggested, it all came down to Friday night’s decider against the Kiwis. Both teams had progressed through the competition without dropping a point, although the rampant form of the Spanish offence suggested the host nation might have the edge. Opening with a 15-1 drubbing of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Spain also enjoyed a 14-0 rout of Mexico and a 10-1 success over Luxembourg. With all-out attack at the heart of Luciano Basile’s team for this tournament, Spain took the same approach into the showdown with New Zealand, firing in 53 shots net Daniel Lee’s net.

Despite that, it took most of the first period to find a way through the opposing defence. A power-play goal in the 18th minute – Carlos Rivero winning the puck in the corner and feeding Alejandro Carbonell for a close-range wrist shot – finally broke the deadlock to give Spain a lead that its first-period dominance deserved. Carbonell, who plays his hockey in the French second tier with Annecy, is one of four players on the roster playing abroad. Bruno Baldris (Angers Ducs), Gaston Gonzalez (Montpellier Vipers) and Adrian Ubieto (Anglet Hormadi) also play across the border in France.

In the middle frame, the Spanish offence was rampant once again – and this time it converted chances into goals more readily, scoring four times on Lee. Patricio Fuentes set the tone in the 22nd minute, adding a second after Spain repeatedly prevented New Zealand from clearing its lines, and there were further tallies from Oriol Rubio, Oriol Boronat and Ignacio Granell.

However, the hitherto reliable defence – which had allowed just two goals in four games – began to wobble. New Zealand scored three of its own to remain in contention. Paris Heyd quickly converted a power play when he tipped home Callum Burns’ point shot, Aleksandr Polozov finished off after Jacob Ratcliffe’s shot was deflected into his path and Andrew Cox saw his point shot bounce off a defenceman and find the net. At the end of the middle frame, Spain led 5-3 and New Zealand, despite facing an onslaught, still believed it had a chance.

Boronat got his second of the night to make it 6-3 early in the third, but a power play tally from Frazer Ellis kept the Kiwis in contention. Now, though, a more cautious Spain slowed down the offence and closed out the victory to spark the gold medal celebrations at the final hooter. For New Zealand, it was a second successive silver medal after finishing runner-up on home ice last year.

Not surprisingly, Spanish players dominated the scoring charts to take four of the top five places. Boronat (5+7) led the way, with the Puigcerda player finishing one point ahead of team-mate Fuentes from San Sebastian. Seven goals for Boronat’s clubmate Pablo Munoz made him the top goalscorer and he was joined on 10 points by the tournament’s most productive defenseman, Ubieto. New Zealand’s Jordan Challis (3+7) also made the top five. Spain’s dominance ensured that the team allowed just 70 shots on its net over the five games. Ander Alcaine faced most of them and finished with a GAA of 1.49 on his way to the directorate award for top goalie, but Israel’s Nir Tichon also made a good case for honours with an SVG of 91.82%. Fuentes was the top forward and New Zealand’s Stefan Helmersson was top D-man.

Israel secured third place with a victory over Mexico in its final game to finish on nine points. That result also condemned Luxembourg to relegation. The team from the principality won its last game against DPR Korea and would have survived on that head-to-head result if Mexico had gained at least a point against Israel. Instead, though, the teams finished in a three-way tie with Mexico and Luxembourg sharing the same goal difference. The Mexicans’ 3-1 success in the head-to-head meeting kept the Central Americans in this section and sent Luxembourg back to Division III after just one season.

after yesterday's HC Bolzano/Bozen Foxies success in the EBEL, tomorrow it's time for the Italian National team to kill the happiness of the Italian Hockey fans...

Division IA starts with an interesting lineup (SLO, KAZ, HUN, POL, ITA & GBR) and our perspective should be to save our a**, rather than hoping for a non predictable promotion...

Our first game is against Poland (h.19.30 CET, live streaming, as for the entire tournament, on the IIHF page on Youtube) and it could prove already decisive for our championship...a loss, infact, would probably mean that we're going to play for the 5th spot against GBR and nothing more...

and looking at our team, I just can't be optimistic...

    • Not counting Colturi the last time an Italian women skier stood on the podium of the World Cup in a special slalom was in 2011:     -Manuela Moelgg: 4.01.2011..       The last Italian victory was:     -Chiara Costazza: 29.12.2007...         In my opinion the best slalom skier on the Italian team is still Federica Brignone, who doesn`t trains in this discipline anymore. If she did, she would probably easily beat skiers like Peterlini, Rossetti or Della Mea. I don't understand why we have such problems in this competition? Bad training methods, bad coaches? I fear that Colturi would also be reduced to mediocrity by this hopeless Italian staff, who are unable to train an athlete for a dozen or so years to reach a single World Cup podium. Radical changes should have been implemented long ago, because the current state of affairs doesn`t guarantee any progress in the near future...
    • Was an announcement which competitions will be on 2026 Olympics games? On Olympics Games site there is an information that for the first time men and women will competite on the same distances.       10 + 10 km skiathlon (men and women) - clear     Sprint (men and women) - but what style?     Freestyle team sprint (men and women) - clear     Relay 4x7.5 km (men and women) - clear     10 km freestyle (men and women) - clear     50 km classical technique (men and women) - clear
    • I'll give you the curling comments based on your expertise. But, I will say that GB have only ever not qualified a curling team once, the mixed pair in 2018. They just have a way of upping their game when the olympics come around.    I hope I'm wrong but I have a funny feeling that Huw Nightingale won't qualify and as such neither will the Mixed Team. It feels a bit like the Mixed Team Skeet in Paris, where Ben Llewellin missed out on qualifying for the individual so the team couldn't compete, despite being World Champions 2 years prior.    Again, you definately know more about ice hockey than me but I feel like, apart from vs Norway, the Team wasn't outplayed in the final qualifier. Albeit intermittently, the team has been in the top division of the world championships for a few years now, so they do have the quality to compete for an Olympic Berth
    • Think you're you're being a little pessimistic here. In men's slalom the #3 GB skier is in the world top 40 and the 3 Carrick-Smith teenagers are jumping up the rankings too. I'd actually be slightly disappointed if we didn't have a full team of 4 slalom skiers plus 2 in the women's event. The speed events are going to be a big challenge though   EDIT - Sorry, #3 GB slalom skier is actually ranked #41 in the world
    • " There one kid trying the stuff, but no chance unless he swithc nationality to Benin or Tuvalu for the free pass" - There is no universality quotas at the WOG
    • The big problem with Nines is that every attempt at a world competition has failed badly. A World Cup in 2019 was not repeated again and a World Club tournament was abandoned 20 years years ago due to a lack of interest. I'm not even sure the variant is played anywhere these days.
    • I believe, the IOC has admitted the cap will have to be relaxed for 2028.   I think they will go with what you proposed. 10,500 for core sports plus some for extra sports
    • Slovakia   Team Size Prediction for Winter Olympic Games 2026 Milano Cortina   Ski Sports   Alpine Skiing  (5) - As usual, 3 W & 2 M. Petra Vlhová will be accompanied by 2 other girls, I guess Rebeka Jančová should be one of them, no idea who will be the other one. For the men team, it is going to be again the Žampa bros clan with one last dance for Adam and once again joind by his younger brother Andreas. Cross Country Skiing  (4) - As always in the last couple of games, I expect a Coubertine-like participation in this sport with a perfect Bach-esque gender equality with 2 M and 2 W in order to start in both Team sprints semifinals. Do not ask me the names, I have absolutely no idea Ski Jumping  (2) - There a quite solid chance to finally return in this beautiful sport for Slovakia since the extinction of the dinosaurs. The young Kapustík siblings, Hektor and his sister Kira are the biggest chances for this history making, Among women it would be an absolute premiere, plus there a minor chance that Kira Kapustíková may be, if all planets align perfectly accompanied by another girl Tamara Mesíková. Nordic Combined  (0) - Maybe in Abu Dhabi 2042 or New Trumpopolis 2046 Freestyle Skiing  (1) - Michael Oravec in Freeski Big Air & Slopestyle is the only realistic chance, there some young girls trying ski cross, but still too long way to go here Snowboarding  (2) - Klaudia Medlová once returned from injuries should qualify for her last games in Big Air + Slopestyle. Among men in the same disciplines we may have an olympic debut with Samuel Jaroš. Biathlon  (6) - Hopefully with the returns of Paja Fialková (now Batovská) and Nastya Kuzmina we will win enough points to qualify a full female squad alongside the young Ema Kapustová and one of the Remeňová sisters to form a relay. Among men, the situation is more complicated, I hope at least 2 guys will make it (The biggest chances I see for the young talent Borguľa and maybe Sklenárik to join him) to have at least a mixed relay, a full men relay hope is utopic Ski Mountaineering  (2) - Funny enough, probably our biggest medal chance is this niche sport with Marianna Jagerčíková in W Sprint, alongside her male partner Jakub Šiarnik we should start also in the Mixed relay     Skating Sports   Speed Skating  (1) - There a fresh young czech import who can qualify us for the very first time in this sport, his name is Lukáš Steklý, but since I have zero clue about this sport I can not say how much it is also realistic though Short Track Speed Skating  (0) - Would be nice to have again a participation in this, we have a couple of talented young girls, but still far from the required level, so probably none again Figure Skating  (1) - The young Adam Hagara is our solid chance for participating, he will need a good dose of luck in the process though, and as knowing the good old mathematical laws about the equation between Slovakia and Luck it will end by Zero athletes     Sleigh Sports   Luge  (5) - 2 guys in Singles with the immortal Highlander Ninis, a pair in Doubles and at least one female should qualify, at least I hope so Skeleton  (0) - There one kid trying the stuff, but no chance unless he swithc nationality to Benin or Tuvalu for the free pass Bobsleigh  (1) - Viki Čerňanská I do believe shoud repeat her Olympic experience from Beijing in the monobobs once again     Team Sports   Curling  (0) - lol Ice Hockey  (25) - Embarassement and national mourning avoided, The National pride qualified again and continue the streak of never missing any winter olympic tournament since the independence. With very likely the most talented generation our hockey ever had, Cortina is a great journey we are looking forward.
