Russia rolls to 5-0 win

Panarin back with three assists

 

Russia's win over Latvia tonight at LANXESS arena marking their third straight shutout. They remain on top of Group A.

 

Two goals in the first, two in the second, and one more in the third aided Russia’s sixth win, setting up a showdown with Team USA tomorrow to determine first place in the group. 

 

Latvia was attempting to reverse a two game losing streak after winning their first three games in the tournament. Today they would come up far short. Further, Latvia has not beaten Russia in World Championship competition since 2004.  

 

Russia’s offence remained lethal even with changes in the lineup because of new additions to the roster and injuries. Washington Capitals Yevgeni Kuznetsov and Dmitri Orlov both played their first game of the tournament. Sergei Mozyakin has left the competition after suffering an injury against Germany.

 

Artemi Panarin returned to the lineup and was again a stellar performer. His three assists paced the attack as he teamed with Nikita Kucherov who had a goal and two assists, and with Vladislav Namestnikov adding a goal.

 

Latvian goaltender Elvis Merzlikins, who has been outstanding, was given the night off. Ivars Punnenovs was selected to face down the Russian machine. Punnenovs has represented Latvia at U18 and U20 World Championships but this would be his senior men’s debut. 

 

Goaltender Andrei Vasilevski is one of Russia’s best players in this group. Coming into the contest he’s racked up four wins in as many games and two shutouts that came in consecutive games. But tonight, he was given a rest and Ilya Sorokin made his first start.

 

Russia enjoyed numerous early chances. They cycled and passed the puck, working it deep and showing enough energy to keep the Latvians on their toes. Vadim Shipachyov sent a bank pass off the neutral zone boards that just managed to elude defenceman Guntis Galvins and found Nikita Gusev who collected the biscuit for a backhand shot that went through Punnenovs goal pads just wide.

 

At 12:10, Russia won an offensive zone draw and Panarin passed the puck to Bogdan Kiselevich who fired a wrist shot that made its way through on goal, hitting Punnenovs, and finding the net.

 

Sergei Plotnikov enjoyed a commanding first period. Plotnikov shook a defender behind the net then attempted a wraparound that was stopped. It was his first of three shots in the period. Later, he set up Ivan Telegin at 18:41 for a 2-0 lead. Uvis Balinskis could not control the puck in the neutral zone and it squirted past him to Plotnikov who skated in two-on-one in the Latvian zone for a shot that was saved. The rebound remained loose under the goaltender in the crease with a sea of bodies in front. Telegin skated towards the traffic in the crease to tap the puck in for his second tournament goal. 

 

With four seconds remaining in the first, Oscars Cibulskis was whistled for a hooking penalty that would carry into the next period. Latvia did exactly what you shouldn’t do playing against the top ranked power play in the tournament: give them a chance to create with the man advantage.

 

Fifty-seven seconds into the start of the second, Namestnikov scored on the power play with help from Panarin. 

 

After being down 7-0 in shots, Latvia reeled off six shots of their own in a five minute span. Sorokin made a few excellent chances along the way. At 10:39 Cibulskis sent a point blank shot on Sorokin who kept it out with a pad save. Russia has given up a mere five goals in six games. 

 

At the 19:00 mark of the middle period, Kucherov scored to make it 4-0. And finally when Balinskis was sent off for slashing, Russia scored their 12th power play goal pof the tournament when Anton Belov found his scoring touch at 13:17 of the third.

 

Russia's game tomorrow against Team USA will decide who finishes first in Group A and gets the chance to play the fourth seed from Group B in Paris. Then the final Preliminary Round game at LANXESS arena pits Latvia against Germany with the winner moving through to the round of eight.

End of an era

Huet, Meunier say farewell in win over Slovenia

 

French goalie Cristobal Huet and captain Laurent Meunier ended their long and honourable international careers with a 4-1 victory over Slovenia on Monday.

 

On paper, the final group game for both teams at the AccorHotels Arena only mattered for seeding purposes. France had already been eliminated from quarter-final contention, while Slovenia was doomed to last place in Group B .

 

But it was a time to celebrate and reflect on two players who have made immeasurable contributions to the success of French hockey. Les Bleus have stayed in the elite division of the IIHF World Championship every year since 2008.

 

Huet shone in his swan song as Slovenia outshot France 27-25. Antoine Roussel led the way with a hat trick and an assist, while Yohann Auvitu had a goal and two helpers.

With 24 seconds left in the game, coach Dave Henderson called his timeout and the French players came out to bang their sticks on the ice and salute their veteran netminder. Huet then retired to the bench as backup Florian Hardy gave him a well-earned rest. He was named France's Player of the Game.

 

Huet, 41, first suited up at an IIHF World Championship in 1997. This is his 13th elite-division tournament, tying him for the all-time record with Russia’s Vladislav Tretiak and Belarus’s Andrei Mezin. In addition to a distinguished career with French and Swiss NLA clubs (he won a title in each league), the two-time Olympian became the first Frenchman to capture the Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

 

Meunier, 38, made his top-level Worlds debut in 1999 and has played 12 elite-division Worlds. He has worn the “C” with the national team since 2005. The all-around forward’s club career has taken him to France, the United States, Germany, Sweden, Switzerland.

 

Most of the crowd of 12,807 stayed to give their two heroes an appreciative homage during an emotional post-game ceremony.

 

In the first period, the French started off slowly and Huet confounded the Slovenian attack. He foiled Bostjan Golicic on two close-in attempts. With 3:16 left in the frame, defenceman Jonathan Janil tripped up Ales Music on a breakaway and the Slovene was awarded a penalty shot. Huet stared him down and Music fired wide.

 

Early in the second period, Janil and his partner Damien Raux kept the game deadlocked at zero, scrambling to block two Slovenian attempts on an empty net with Huet caught out of position.

 

The French finally broke through with NHL expertise. At 8:20, 15 seconds into a power play, Auvitu of the New Jersey Devils unleashed a center point shot that the Dallas Stars agitator Roussel, parked in front, tipped past Slovenian starter Matija Pintaric. Less than three minutes later, Auvitu scored his second goal of the tournament on a snap shot, converting a drop pass from Pierre-Edouard Bellemare of the Philadelphia Flyers.

 

At the other end, Huet denied Golicic on a nice chance off the rush, and denied Robert Sabolic from the slot with France killing a late-period penalty for too many men on the ice.

In the third period, Roussel stretched France's lead to 3-0 at 4:01 with a two-man advantage, tipping in another Auvitu shot.

Just 24 seconds later, Mursak struck back with a shorthanded breakaway tally, fighting off a backchecking Damien Fleury and tucking a backhand through Huet's legs.

But the Slovenes wouldn't be able to spoil the festivities for Huet and Meunier. Roussel rounded out the scoring with an empty-netter with 1:30 left, and the fans chanted in honor of Huet as the seconds ticked down.

Slovenia's three best players of the tournament were named: Jan Mursak, Robert Sabolic, and Ales Kranjc. For France, it was Cristobal Huet, Laurent Meunier, and Stephane Da Costa.
