NBC will air the Tokyo 2020 Opening Ceremony LIVE at 7am ET. This is the first time ever that they are airing the opening ceremony live in a morning time slot. They will also have a replay in the normal prime time spot.

Official press release from NBC..

NBC OLYMPICS TO PROVIDE UNPRECEDENTED NETWORK COVERAGE OF TOKYO OLYMPICS OPENING CEREMONY

Definitely a welcome change of pace.  Love to see an entire day of Olympics coverage surrounding the Opening Ceremony rather than the usual "we're editing the whole thing for primetime."  I'm not normally a morning person, but I'll certainly make an exception that morning!!

Jordan Burroughs will not defend his gold medal in the men’s freestyle wrestling 74kg event. He loses two matches in a row to Kyle Dake in the US Olympic trials & Dake will head to Tokyo. It is the end of an era in USA wrestling. Congrats to Dake! Thanks for the memories Burroughs!

NBC Olympics updated their website!

Whelp, that’s me doing a complete 180 on my sleep/awake cycle :p

There are some (what appear to be) great features though. There’s a rules explanation, competition format breakdown, vocabulary sheet, and other helpful/useful information available for every sport. Not to mention the streaming schedule. I’d imagine @Quaker2001 is already plugging away on his spreadsheet.

At this point, every event is streamed live, so there's not necessarily any new information here that I don't already have from the competition schedule on the Tokyo site and other places that have more detail.  The big thing for me will be the broadcast schedule, because that will really determine my work/sleep schedule.  That's what I need to add to the spreadsheet, but we likely won't get that until early July once all the qualifiers are complete and the rest of the team sports are slotted, most notably beach volleyball since we can be sure NBC will manipulate that one to get the American teams playing in the TV windows they want.

There was some interesting information in the streaming schedule. Badminton and Wrestling will get multi-court/mat coverage for instance, while it looks like Judo/Fencing won’t (at there’s no separate streams). Sailing will get daily coverage, but it’s still unclear what races will be shown. To me, it doesn’t seem like there’s been many changes to OBS coverage since Rio 2016.

I’ll likely only watch through the OBS streams, so broadcast schedule isn’t too important to me, but it would be nice to see what I can watch with family/friends and whatnot.

My thing especially with an Olympics in Asia is that if something is on TV overnight, I can DVR it and watch it in the morning when I wake up.  Can't always do that with the online streams.  And better quality picture if it's on TV.  But yes, always enjoy the little bonuses that streaming provides (i.e. multiple streams for 1 sport).  Need to see how many screens I can have going at once.  Might be a good excuse to upgrade my internet speed

I've only done a quick look at the grid.  How are you able to tell that Judo/Fencing will not have multi-mat coverage?

I'm interested to see what they do with Athletics, both TV and streaming.  In Rio, they had the morning T&F session, live and complete on MSNBC, TripleCast style, while they would cut in and out for T&F on regular NBC.

    • Your most ever at a Summer Olympics was 14 golds, 20 would be a big increase even with the new sports  I’d say out of them, only costal rowing has a chance of gold, and flag football a medal if they can qualify.    Wouldn’t breaking the 14 from 1984 be a good for Italy? I’d say so. They can’t all convert after all, and you’ve been hovering in the 8-13 range for a while (although Italy has gotten better the past two)   For Canada at least, 11+ golds would be amazing, anything else would be a bonus. We won 9 in Tokyo which is our highest total ever.
    • Personally, I'm really looking forward to Japan's performance in the World Cup. From the current situation, Japan has a very distinctive playing style. They have strong tactical ideas whether facing European teams or South American teams. However, Japan has never won a knockout match in the World Cup. As someone who has been following Asian football for a long time, I really admire Japanese football.
    • Italy didn't qualify again.    Well, now all that's left is for Germany to be eliminated again in the group stage and we'll guarantee another 4 years of "Brazil, the only five-time champion in history, nobody is bigger than Brazil, respect our history and blah blah" that we use on the internet.
    • Failing to qualify for the World Cup once can be put down to bad luck or other reasons, but missing out three times in a row must be due to an all-round gap. I feel sorry for Italy.
    • Italians can only blame themselves. Serie A has been run by foreigners more than any other Top 5 domestic league. There are zero global stars not named Donnarumma. This is the weakest Italian crop of players I can remember and it's not even close.   As for Poland, our defense did a terrible job. Unlike the much-maligned Michniewicz & Probierz who often parked the bus, Urban completely run out of BS luck since errors proved too numerous & too costly.
    • Okay, but defeats to Macedonia and Bosnia are unacceptable. Above all, let Italians start playing in Italian clubs... Look at Milan or Como...  Another think is the old and ugly stadiums - Türkiye or Poland currently have much better infrastructure than we do.
    • Problem is, that the current funding system of Italian sports - since 2018- relies on football paying the lion's share through taxes (around 70% of the sum that is redistributed). So the rest is strong until it can draw money from football, which in turn makes football weaker and less able to generate money and then who knows.
    • I prefer our current strong sport at all and weak football than a lucky promotion and defeat at the World Cup, as in 2010 or 2014. Sinner, Brignone, or Antonelli are worth 100 times more than losers like Bastoni.
    • if tonight's humiliation means 20+ gold and 50+ total medals in 2 years time in LA, I'll take it 1 billion times    and I'd never change the emotions of the 2 Olympic weeks in Milan (and the other sites) with just another average soccer world cup
    • Strong teams advance from the groups, especially since there are now 48 teams playing at the World Cup, not 32. It's Italy's fault that they lost 0-3 and 1-4 to Norway.
