Bulgarian team is out for the upcoming ECH. There are some good news in that after a year of scandals, some of the biggest names are once again included in the National team and will participate. The issues have not been cleared by any means, but both sides said they have made compromises for now, so that the best wrestlers compete.

By the way, wasn't there some UWW rule about the number of foreigners you had to field per style? As far as i see, we are using almost all of our Russians  Guess this rule was set for any new naturalisations and all previous ones are disregarded, which practically makes this change useless for 6-7 years down the road.

yeah, apparently the new rule only applies to post-2025 naturalized wrestlers

Where does this power of Ukrainian women come from? They used to be strong, but not like this...

Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?

 

In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...

As you said, Ukrainian girls have always been strong, but not dominant at continental level; my conjecture is that the Russian invasion has made them mentally stronger, giving them that extra edge needed to tilt the balance in the final stages of a competition.

Okay, mental strength and ambition are importatn thing, but you still need a lot of money for preparation and training, and working in Ukraine for the last 4 years has been very risky. Also, there is certainly more money going into to higher the army than, say: 10 or 15 years ago- sport is simply not a priority there anymore, like in the USSR years, or around 2000 - at least I think so.

in the first night of freestyle finals, Russia won 4 out of 5 golds. they have 2 in the final tomorrow, I think they can reach their pre-tournament goal of winning 6 golds.

 

but interestingly all 20 medalists of tonight were either from Ex-Soviet countries or Russian mercenaries representing somewhere else

 

I think it's fair to say men's freestyle wrestling is dead and buried in Europe unfortunately. (I mean the old Europe excluding Ex-Soviets) hopefully the new UWW policy pushes some of these countries to restart their own program instead of just buying mercenaries but that will take time.
