Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 Medal Count

Recommended Posts

  • 2 months later...

Two weeks before the Games officially begin, time to give my final predictions on the medal standings. :p

:USA will beat :NOR and win the medal table at the WOG for the first time in 100 years. All the (absurd) retirements of elite Norge athletes last season will have its consequences and they will drop to second.

:CAN will my bold pick to return to the top 3 after their horrendous Beijing performance, when it comes to Gold medals.

:GER Germany will slip down and will have less than 9 golds for the first time in 50 years. Depending on how the chips fall in some sports, they could even be outside the top 5.

Home team of :ITA will have their best Olympics in some, better than Torino, but it still won't be enough to get into the top 5.

Time for more personal and detailed predictions:

:wSVK: will have it hard this time.

I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.

We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.

It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:

  • Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario.
  • Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances.
  • As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country.
  • Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.

We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.

I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.

Interesting forecasts, I like 'em!

I think the US wins the most medals, but Norway tops the standings (most golds)... have Germany neck-and-neck with Norway for medals, but fewer gold.

Then have Canada and Italy fighting it out for 4th in 5th

Then have Sweden, Austrian, Japan, Netherlands and France rounding out the top ten, with them all within a medal or two of each other.

Of course reality will differ significantly

@hckošice Do you agree with me to some extent, or am I hopelessly dreaming?

Sure.

An eventual medal would do a lot of good to the country right now, but I am afraid there bigger odds we will return empty handed than we will bring a medal home

- Our biggest star did not compete for 2 years and god know only if she will even start here, plus with bib 19 or 20 is simply impossible to medal anyway

- The hockey team let be honest stand no real medal chance against the full NHL squads, medals here are reserved to CAN, USA and very likely SWE

- Biathlete, especially Fialková are maybe our darkest horse, but only and only if she will improve her shooting, which, based on her recent performances on the range is quite hard to imagine. Still in a great day she can bring a bronze in the Mass Start for example, she is definitely capable of.. but yeah, require 4 zeros at the range

- Ski Mo, until last year was our safe medal. Not sure what happens during the summer, Big nations improved extremely, probably money resulting in better preprations and equipement improvement resulted that our Jagerčíková is still good but just can not keep the rhythm of the french and swiss of this season anymore.

    • Basically, NOCs can attempt to qualify in additional events without gaining athlete quotas. For example, let's say a nation already qualified in the 4- and 4x, they can use the athletes they plan to send in those events and try to qualify in the 8+. That's where the extra coxswains will be used. If a nation intends to attempt to double-up they must let World Rowing know before the final qualifier regatta.   There's a good chance the quotas may not be used and will have to be reallocated. Looking at 2024, only  would have been eligible for the men while the women there's . With that said there's no guarantee they would have wanted to double-up their athletes.   In reality we are more likely to see the reverse, nations who qualified in the 4x, 4-, or 8+ doubling-up athletes for the 1x, 2x, 2-.
    • Hey everyone, how are you all?   Reading the qualification document here and the "3 quotas for additional coxswain" is very confusing to me. Can someone (try to) explain to me please how those quotas will be assigned?    Thank you so much

    • In a country as big as , the odds of Olympians being close to you are quite small; however, once I realized several months ago that even a state as small as mine hosts Olympians on occasion, I decided to scour each sport's calendar to make sure I caught them when they come around.  That led me to the middle of nowhere in my own state today, where there was a 4* Eventing competition, featuring a couple of Olympians and/or World Champion athletes.   Most all the athletes here were local or from USA, but there were a couple who compete for   or .  When we walked up, I had no idea what I was doing.  I thought I was in the right arena at the venue, but I didn't really see anyone there.  (There weren't any stands full of spectators, nor did I see any judges...it was time for dressage.). One of the ladies turned around and we struck up conversation.  Turns out I was in the right spot, and they were just on a short break.  She directed my attention to the upcoming athlete, Caroline Pamukcu.  Thanks to my research ahead of time, I knew she was on the Paris 2024 Eventing Team.  The lady we were talking with was the owner of the horse Caroline was riding.  After she finished with her dressage round, she got off the horse and was just standing there talking with her crew.  We went over and had a brief chat and one of the other ladies offered to take our picture.     I asked Caroline if she was aiming for LA28, and she said yes.  I've also since shown the girls and wifey the video from her Paris 2024 jumping competition.  Hope she makes the team this year!   (Caroline has a Gold Individual Eventing and Silver Team Eventing medal from the 2023 PanAms.  Boyd Martin from the Paris team was also there, himself having a WCh Silver and three gold PanAms.  Tamra Smith, who has a Silver from the 2022 WCh, was there as well.  Waylon Roberts, who represents  and has a PanAm Silver competed.  I saw a few more Dressage rounds, then watched them all do the Jumping.  Didn't get to see Cross-Country, but they'll have another similar event in October.)
