It will be difficult to beat the Czech Republic, so I think this is a good result.

So what's the balance of power here? Ned, Czech Republic, Spain/Italy?

So, Phelps was recently wrote that we would play so poorly here, but it's not that bad... I only hope that we don't finish in 4th place, because I'm tired of us finishing 4th in most of sports:hairpull:

Yes, but after the last ec, being back in the top 4 it’s almost enough

But in our first squad we probably will win easy?

this is our squad, the team with the best players from the Italian league

WBC is just another beast, with different rules on the players' eligibility

there we could field a dream team, but that's the only event where it's possible

still, also in WBSC tournaments we could field some better (US born) players from the American minor leagues, but we usually try to use at least half the team of Italian born players, which makes Italy a modest team

however, no...also other European teams (NED, ESP above all) can fill their rosters with players from the major leagues and still beat us

Esp- UK 7-0:yikes:Spain is truly a phenomenon in team sports in the 21st century...

ESP is basically a DOM + VEN team, that's why they're good (like ITA when using top US born players)

But they lost here to Czechia 1-9... Czechia lost to Germany... We won to Germany... So, we have a big chance against Czechia? Czechia and Germany and Spain looks like a similar level teams, right? Czechia consist on local players?

yes, Czechia only play with local players (even if a few of them normally play in the US college system)

as I told you, it's the nature of baseball

any team can always win or lose against anybody in a single match

the pitching performance on a given day is always the key, you can have the strongest lineup in the world on paper, but if your pitchers have a bad day, you're done and dusted

that's why the main leagues play 144/162 games in RS and best-of-7 series in the playoffs decisive rounds, that's the only way for the best to emerge

🇳🇱 no Dutch-Americans (anymore), but a significant element of players from what was formerly the Netherlands Antilles, and are now several separate entities. These players have a Dutch passport, since these entities are all part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. As I wrote on another thread, their inclusion in our Baseball team is the reason that team self-identifies as The Kingdom Of The Netherlands and not simply The Netherlands.

    • @hckošice Do you agree with me to some extent, or am I hopelessly dreaming?
    • Interesting forecasts, I like 'em! I think the US wins the most medals, but Norway tops the standings (most golds)... have Germany neck-and-neck with Norway for medals, but fewer gold.    Then have Canada and Italy fighting it out for 4th in 5th   Then have Sweden, Austrian, Japan, Netherlands and France rounding out the top ten, with them all within a medal or two of each other. Of course reality with differ significantly
    • A huge day for the very young Italian Bertini: despite a very tough draw, he beats Szilagy in the round of 16 and Gu in the quarterfinals! First career podium for him!
    • Time for more personal and detailed predictions:    will have it hard this time.   I'm trying to stay realistic about our chances. We're not going there as favorites in most events, and deep down I know it would be a big surprise if we suddenly overperformed or even dominated. Still, sports have a beautiful way of ignoring expectations.   We're never predicted to do amazingly well at either edition of the Olympics, so I’m desperately hoping for moments that will stay with everyone in the country for years, whether it's a final that keeps people glued to their screens or a performance that will make us proud. Just one medal could mean so much. It would bring real emotions and something to cheer for to a country that isn’t going through its best period right now. And on the rare occasion of a hockey miracle, celebrations in the streets wouldn't be an oddity.   It all comes down to four sports, the rest are out of reach:   Alpine Skiing is a big mystery, and it will all come down to Petra, whether she'll compete and eventually shock everyone with a heroic result. That's the best-case scenario. Biathlon can be the dark horse, you never know how things turn around. The women's relay is probably our biggest chance, but all four of them need to deliver great performances. As for Ice Hockey, our national sport, I'll always believe in another fairytale. I'll always believe we'll pull off a miracle. Since I wasn't alive yet when we won gold at the World Championships, I can only resort to watching old videos and imagine how amazing it must have been to watch as your country is the champion of the world in something. Best on the planet. Even the silver years later was amazing, but I was too young to actually remember it, so it's time for another hockey euphoria in the country. Ski Mountaineering is a bit overlooked in the media right now, but I believe we have a huge chance of winning a medal in one of the events. Our athletes aren't minnows.   We're a small country, still relatively young. There's not much we're known for in the world, but sports are a perfect way to build a national identity, to stop people from thinking you're still part of a state that ceased to exist decades ago. Doing well in sports is one of the few things these lesser-known countries can show off, not just the ones in Europe.   I'm desperately hoping for a medal, and we all want those two weeks of the Olympics to be amazing and full of unforgettable moments.
    • Never wanted a prediction to be more right
    • Two weeks before the Games officially begin, time to give my final predictions on the medal standings.     will beat  and win the medal table at the WOG for the first time in 100 years. All the (absurd) retirements of elite Norge athletes last season will have its consequences and they will drop to second.    will my bold pick to return to the top 3 after their horrendous Beijing performance, when it comes to Gold medals.     Germany will slip down and will have less than 9 golds for the first time in 50 years. Depending on how the chips fall in some sports, they could even be outside the top 5.   Home team of  will have their best Olympics in some, better than Torino, but it still won't be enough to get into the top 5.
