Why is that? :p

Qualifying for summer sports will begin in next year. For now, these calculations are more for fun. Italy this year:

- swimming: 7 medals,
- open water: 2 medals,
- diving: 1 medal,
- fencing: 6 medals,
- judo: 2 medals,
- sailing: 1 medal.

Total: 5 gold medals, 6 silver medals, 8 bronze medals.

Yeah, but we are talking about the World Championships Medal Counts for the next Olympic cycle, which is already started with some World Championships in 2024 after Paris.

This was the one done in the road to Paris 2024: https://totallympics.com/qualification-tracker/paris-2024/world-championships-medal-counts-in-the-road-to-paris-2024/

I have been tracking the top 8 in the World Championships for Olympic events and giving them 8,7,6,... points for a points table. So far 99 events counted. Here's the top 40 countries (notes: 1- in artistic swimming I thought the most reasonable way to count it was to sum the scores from the free and technical (and acrobatic for the team) finals and build a new standing; 2- RUS includes all "neutrals", "independent", whatever else of Russian nationality).

Love that. IMO, that's basically the best projection tool possible for the olympics.

it'd be better to come up with different points systems for different sports (if not events), but the effort is too much imo for what I believe would be an overall minor improvement, over about 350 event things should balance out a bit.

Yes, i would like to continue this thread . We can try it

Some issues though - e.g. Artistic Swimming - which WCH events are olympic  ones? Free routines??? I don’t know, i don’t follow this sport at all.

In the Olympics for artistic swimming, it's the sum total of free+technical+acrobatic for team, and for duet it's the free+technical.  But now as I look, for instance, there are often different pairs for the two routines, or maybe one country doesn't even compete in one.  Austria, for instance, won gold in technical duet, but didn't compete in free.  Spain used two athletes in one, but two others in the other.  So perhaps hard to tell.

But if you simply went by NOC, it would be Russia (or, Neutral) Gold, China Silver, Spain Bronze for duet.

Team - China Gold, Spain Silver, Italy Bronze.

    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?

    • Very true point.  Although I think at this point everyone is just holding their collective breath until the test event.  The NHL isn't going to rage anymore until then because it's not like that would make the arena progress go any quicker
