the real disaster for ITA comes from the women's team pursuit, they won with margin the qualifying round and then they were thrashed by GBR in the second round and didn't even make it through to the bronze medal ride

and they were almost in their top formation 🤦😤🤬

The Italian team had a crash so not surprising they missed the medal matches

well, at least there's an explanation (I'm not watching, unfortunately)

that 4.19 looked so strange...

however, justified or not, this is an awful outcome for us

Unfortunately they don't televise the morning session of day 1 - I picked that up on UCI Twitter feed

A bit of a mixed session for :GBR GB.

The Women's Team Pursuit blew up in the final and were lucky to avoid the overlap. Worth saying the GB were the only medalist that didn't make use of their substitute rider - probably not surprising given the substitute was Lauren Bell. Still a second-tier team was good enough to take a silver.

The Men's Team Pursuit had a nightmare day. Having crashed in the first qualifying run, they did enough on the rerun to get to the 1st round where they did step up and qualify for the bronze medal match. They kept it close against China for the first half before fading pretty badly to finish 4th.

I was a bit surprised that the Women's Team Sprint were beaten by China. They were leading by 0.2 seconds after Bell and Finucane had completed their laps but it looked like Parris-Smith was just way too far back.

The standout was the Men's Team Sprint. I thought they were going to have to settle for the silver but somehow managed to pull it out of the bag in the final lap.

I definitely picked the wrong section of the crowd though - caught between two competing locals. One vocally anti-China, accusing them of cheating and booing every time they were on the track. At one point he was singing God Save the King and Rule Britannia. In the end he was asked to leave.

Biggest cheer of the night was for :HKG Lee Sze Wing's silver in the elimination race.

A great weekend in the Hong Kong velodrome and will definitely be back for next year's event which will count towards Olympic qualification. The crashes are spectacular - the noise reverberates across the track - and the crowd can get so close to the action.

If this weekend's results are anything to go by, the traditional cycling nations wont have it their own way going into LA. Was impressed by a couple of the :JPN riders across both their sprint and endurance teams whilst the :CHN women's sprinters could be ones to watch.

Overall, it was a successful weekend for both the :GBR and :NED teams - the Dutch Men's Madison team were outstanding, whilst Matthew Richardson and Emma Finucane have amazing turn of speed.

Couple of (poor quality) pics of the :GBR v :AUS grudge match in the men's sprint semifinals:

    • In Bulgaria, however, the turnout was still very low: 43%... In Hungary it was almost 80%... Still, more than half of Bulgarians don`t want to have any influence on the situation in their country.
    • Large win for Radev, but a little a short for independent majority (it's not Magyar's large scale win in Hungary), but given the Bulgarian reality, it's still a great result. Maybe a PB-BSP coalition is realistic? It would be a left-wing coalition, somewhat in the style of the old SLD-UP in Poland, with perhaps a more pro-Russian leaning in Bulgaria, I think. We'll see. After 5 years of chaos, greater stability is certainly needed in Bulgaria, but I hope that as it's not some new Fico/Orban :P

    • 12/18  judokas went on the podium, which is impressive...  But it’s really a shame, only two gold medals. Disappointing, just like at the Olympic Games (two titles, including the team event) and at the last World Championships (one title, and Gaba didn’t even win a medal at these European Championships).

    • Women's 19-14 win over  was their first win of the season. They went over 30 matches without a win !! Mind you, to be fair, they only just managed to sneak out the win and were helped by the fact that South Africa had a player sent off.   The Hong Kong Sevens weekend is always mad and you can rely on seeing some weird and wonderful sights as you travel on the MTR. Highlights this year included a couple of life sized Labubus - they must have been sweating up a storm in those things.

    • I know that, but I just wanted to show the pathology of Orban's power system that he did something like that for a public money.
