The logic is financial, as it was back in the day for the dreadful UKA selection system. Once that is understood, all else follows entirely logically.

I can almost buy into the financial angle - but the financial burden for the Olympics falls on the BOA and not GB Aquatics. Add to that, this year they've increased the size of the team cap, so they were showing a willingness to take a bigger team

They always take a bigger team to Europeans as you can enter 4 per event in the heats. I understand the need for strong targets and you can't argue that there hasn't been significant growth in depth across the country since 2012. Its all about striking a balance, and I would say that some events should have slightly lower times. There are many nations at a similar strength to us that have strict consideration times, in particular Japan. Sometimes these targets are needed to drive competition especially in events with less depth.

Unfortunately, GB Aquatics have taken over the mantle from GB Athletics to now have the worst selection policy.

I can't think of any other sport where the federation imposes a cap on the team size (excluding those where the team size is dictated by the number of quotas available). Add to that, they're imposing their own qualification standards which in some cases are wholly unrealistic.

A 16:07.20 for the women's 1500m Freestyle all but guaranteed that nobody would be able to achieve it. Not only is it faster than the Olympic qualifying standard for LA, it would have won silver at the 2024 Europeans. Blocksidge's 16:22.93 was definitely slower than she would have wanted, but that time would still likely have been enough to qualify her for a European final.

I don't see the logic of creating an environment that doesn't maximise the opportunity for athletes to compete at major championships.

I'd have more criticism for the Aquatics GB standards if there wasn't another major competition this summer in the CGs. There's no guarantee that every swimmer who qualifies for Paris will definitely choose to take part.

Blocksidge might have missed the Euros time but she's still potentially going to make the England team. She also still has the 400m final tonight (and presumably the 800m on Sunday) to offer other alternative ways to qualify for Paris.

Secondly, not making the time doesn't preclude the selectors picking her, unless we get 40 swimmers qualifying on time (which is probably unlikely at this point, barring a very strange set of results in the remaining events). It just means they aren't obliged to select her. a 40 person team is also a pretty decent size, and comparable to previous iterations of the Euros.

Finally, it's also worth noting that the 2024 Euros were not long before the Paris Olympics, so the field was not full strength.  The 16.22 she did this week would probably get her into the final at a full strength Euros, but not on a podium.
