Canadian Paralympic Medal Preview

Paralympics are just 4 days away! As for the Olympics, I’ll be doing previews of all the competing Canadian athletes in each sport, our medal chances and where I think we’ll win medals. Don’t follow too much para sport outside of the Paralympics, besides sitting volleyball (I’ve also watched the Para Swimming/Athletics World Championships, and various wheelchair rugby/basketball events), so I’m not the most knowledgeable in certain sports, but that’s what the internet is for right? :d

Canada is sending a strong contingent of 126 athletes, 70 women and 56 men, in 18 sports. In Tokyo, we sent 128 athletes, 71 women and 57 men, and came home with 21 medals, including 5 golds, 10 silvers, and 6 bronzes. Not to jinx anything, but I think there’s a good chance that we can improve on that number.

Part 1 (Part 2 includes the other non-para swimming/athletics sports, Part 3 is para swimming-athletics, Part 4 is a rundown of my predictions)

Archery

Kyle Tremblay - Men’s Compound Open: Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Bronze Medalist, Sao Paolo 2024 Para Pan American Championships Bronze Medalist, 9th at the 2024 Para Archery World Ranking Event Nove Mesto/Para Archery World Ranking Tournament Dubai, WR #9

Badminton

Yuka Chokyu - Women’s Singles WH1: Sydney 2000/Athens 2004/Beijing 2008 Paralympian in wheelchair tennis (!), Lima 2019 Para Pan Ams Silver Medalist/Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Bronze Medalist, WR #10

Boccia

Lance Cryderman- Men’s Individual BC1: Sydney 2000 Paralympian (!), Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Silver Medalist, WR #11

Danik Allard- Men’s Individual BC2: Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Silver Medalist, WR #12

Iulian Ciobanu- Men’s Individual BC4: Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Bronze Medalist, WR #10

Alison Levine- Women’s Individual BC4: Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Gold Medalist, 4th at the 2022 World Championships, Bronze at the 2024 Povea World Cup, WR #2

Alison Levine/Iulian Ciobanu- Pairs BC4: Santiago 2023 Para Pan Ams Gold Medalists, Bronze Medalists at the 2022 World Championships, Silver at the 2024 Montreal World Cup, Gold at the 2024 Povea World Cup, WR #2

Our two best chances come in BC4, with Levine in the women’s individual event, and Levine/Ciobanu in the mixed pairs event. Cryderman, Allard, and Ciobanu could all potentially podium but it’ll be tough. No medal here would be a downright disaster, hopefully we don’t get a repeat of what happened in Tokyo.

Prediction: One gold (mixed pairs BC4), and One bronze (women’s BC4), or two medals.

Cycling

Road Cycling

Nathan Clement - Men’s T1 Time Trial, Men’s T1 Road Race: 2016 Paralympian in swimming, Glasgow 2023 World Championships gold/silver medalist in the time trial/road race, Baie-Comeau 2022 World Championships silver medalist in the time trial/road race, bronze at the 2024 World Cups in Adelaide/Maniago in the road race (and 5th in Otsend) and two silvers (Ostend, Maniago) and a bronze (Adelaide) in the three 2024 World Cup time trials.
Charles Moreau - Men’s H3 Time Trial, Men’s H3 Road Race: Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!),  Rio 2016 bronze medalist in the time trial/road race, Glasgow 2023 World Championships 4th in the time trial (only 0.08 off bronze), Bronze at the 2024 Adelaide World Cup in the time trial and 5th in the road race, 12th in the time trial and 6th in the road race at the Otsend World Cup, and 19th in the road race at the 2024 Maniago World Cup

Mike Sametz - Men’s C3 Time Trial, Road Race: Rio 2016 Paralympian, Rio 2016 bronze medalist in the time trial, Glasgow 2023 bronze medalist in the time trial, 7th in the time trial at the 2024 Ostend World Cup, 8th in the time trial at the 2024 Maniago World Cup and 12th in the road race

Track Cycling

Kate O’Brien - Women’s C4-5 500m Time Trial, Women’s C4 3000m Individual Pursuit: 2015 World Championships silver medalist in mixed team bobsleigh (had to do a double take when reading this, hella impressive), Rio 2016 Olympian in cycling, Tokyo 2020 Paralympian in cycling, Tokyo 2020 silver medalist in the time trial, Saint-Quentin-en-Ivelines 2022/2023 Glasgow World Championships silver medalist in the time trial but finished only 5th at Rio Di Janeiro 2024.

Keely Shaw - Women’s C4-5 500m Time Trial, Women’s C4 3000m Individual Pursuit: Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist in the individual pursuit, 2023/2024 Glasgow/Rio di Janeiro World Championships silver/bronze medalist in the individual pursuit

Mel Pemble - Women’s C1-3 500m Time Trial: 2018 Paralympian in alpine skiing (!), 2023/2024 Glasgow/Rio di Janeiro World Championships bronze/silver medalist in the time trial

Alexandre Hayward - Men’s C3 3000m Individual Pursuit, Men’s C1-3 500m Time Trial: Nothing.

Honestly I’m not sure why Hayward decided to go with track over road, considering he’s had much more success on the latter? Maybe trying to challenge himself more?

Anyways, along with para swimming and athletics, cycling is expected to hand us a fair few medals. On the road, we have debutant (in cycling) Clement as the headliner, with Moreau and Sametz both capable of challenging for minor medals.

On the track, another debutant Mel Pemble has quickly risen to become one of Canada’s biggest para stars in a matter of a couple of years. Unfortunately the majority of her events aren’t in the Paralympic program, and she only has the time trial, in which classes are combined so it’ll be even tougher for her to make the podium. Reid, van den Aarssen, and Xiaomei will be her biggest competition. Shaw in the individual pursuit and O’Brien in the time trial are good bets for a medal as well. O’Brien, at best will be limited to silver, Great Britain’s O’Cox has won the last three World Championships titles, and is the 2x defending Paralympic champion. Normoyle, Groot, Xiaohui, Patoullet, Petricola, and O’Brien will likely be the battle for silver and bronze, leaning towards Groot and then O’Brien. In the individual pursuit, it’s Petricola. Then Bosco, Shaw, Morelli, and Lemon for the silver and bronze medals.

Prediction: 2 in road cycling (Gold for Clement in men’s T1 time trial and bronze in the road race), and 3 in track cycling (Bronze for Pemble in women’s c1-3 500m time trial, silver for Shaw in women’s C4-3000m individual pursuit, and bronze for O’Brien in women’s C4-5 500m time trial)

Equestrian

Roberta Sheffield & “Fairuza” - Individual Grade II, Individual Freestyle II: Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, 5th in Individual Grade III at the Herning 2022 World Championships, 6th in Freestyle Grade III at the Herning 2022 World Championships (Sheffield had her classification changed this year), 12th in Individual Grade III at Tokyo 2020, WR #7

Jody Schloss & “El Colorado” - Individual Grade I, Freestyle Grade I: London 2012/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, 11th in Individual Grade I at Tokyo 2020, 12th in Individual Grade I at the Herning 2022 World Championships, WR #19

Austen Burns & “Happy Feet 3” - WR #17

Open Team - 10th at Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, 9th at the Herning 2022 World Championships

Almost had a stroke while typing out the horses names (kidding… somewhat), equestrian is the stupidest sport ever and doesn’t deserve a spot in the Olympics or Paralympics, it’s way too dependent on the horses:facepalm:

Goalball

Women’s Team - 4th at the 2022 Matosinhos World Championships, 4th at the 2023 Birmingham World Games, Gold at the 2023 Santiago Para Pan American Games, WR #6

We beat WR #4 Brazil and WR #3 Brazil on route to the Para Pan American title last fall, which shows this squad (all returnees from Tokyo 2020 so the chemistry is there) is capable of big things. I could see them beating all teams besides Turkey (who are IMO a class above the rest), but the other medals are up for grabs. That being said, I’m quite doubtful of their abilities to put it together during the Paralympics, they haven’t made it to to the medal rounds since 2004, and I believe they’ve been medal contenders at all games since then? (someone correct me if I’m wrong)

Prediction: No medal, and the typical Canadian 4th.

Paracanoeing

Brianna Hennessy - Women’s KL1, Women’s VL2: Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Darmouth 2022/Duisburg 2023/Szeged 2024 World Championships silver medalist in women’s VL2, Darmouth 2022/Duisburg World Championships bronze medalist in women’s KL1, 5th at the Szeged 2024 World Championships

Mathieu St. Pierre - Men’s VL2: Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, 5th at Tokyo 2020, 7th at the Szeged 2024 World Championships

Erica Scarff - Women’s VL3: Duisburg 2023 World Championships silver medalist, Szeged 2024 World Championships 4th

Canada has yet to win a medal in para-canoeing ever since its Olympic debut at Rio 2016, but that streak is looking like it will end in Paris. Hennessy (in both events) and Scarff will both be favoured to land on the podium, having won medals at the last World Championships in Duisburg, and in Hennessy’s case the previous year in Darmouth as well.

Great Britain’s Wiggs has won the last 6 World Championships (2018-2024) in women’s VL2, and is also the reigning Paralympic champion. Ukraine’s Mazhula was the 5x defending World Championships gold medalist (2018-2023) before Wollermann stopped her streak at the Szeged 2024 World Championships. She is also the reigning Paralympic silver medalist. Wiggs has been the dominant athlete in the women’s VL2 event, and there’s no reason to think she won’t be untouchable at Paris. Hennessy finished a fair bit ahead of all three VL2 bronze medalists, so I think she’ll be able to bring home the silver. In KL1, it should be Mazhula, then Wollermann, Müller, and Hennessy in terms of odds but I could see any combination of them on the podium.

In women’s VL3, it should be between Great Britain’s Henshaw and Gordon for gold, and Scarff, Brazil’s Santilli, and Uzbekistan’s Mamadalieva for the bronze.

Prediction: One silver (women’s VL2), One bronze (women’s KL1), or two medals.

Paratriathlon

Stefan Daniel - Men’s PTS5: Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Rio 2016 Paralympic Silver Medalist, Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Bronze Medalist, Pontevedra 2023 World Championships Silver Medalist, Abu Dhabi 2022 World Championships Gold Medalist, Yokohama 2024 World Series 2nd, Swansea 2024 World Series 3rd, Montreal 2024 World Series 2nd, WR #1

Kamylle Frenette - Women’s PTS5: Pontevedra 2023 World Championships 4th, Abu Dhabi 2022 World Championships Bronze Medalist, Yokohama 2024 World Series 2nd, Swansea 2024 World Series 2nd, Montreal 2024 World Series 1st, WR #2

Leanne Taylor - Women’s PTWC: Pontevedra 2023 World Championships 4th, Abu Dhabi 2022 World Championships 5th, Yokohama 2024 World Series 2nd, Swansea 2024 World Series 1st, Montreal 2024 World Series 2nd, WR #4

On paper all three athletes could medal, but at the very least I’m hoping for an improvement on our single bronze medal from Daniel in Tokyo.

Prediction: One silver (men’s PTS5) and One bronze (women’s PTS5), or two medals.

Table Tennis

Peter Isherwood - Men’s Singles WH2: WR #49

This took me around 6 hours to do by the way

I’m actually quicker than normal, but since I had to do a shit ton of research but ugh…

After I’m finished with this, I’m done with previews until Milano-Cortina 2026 (maybe short ones for some of the Olympic qualifiers but that’s it)

You’re welcome! Got a bit of a headache while typing, but given that I was almost done I decided to push through it.

Same, although it’s partly because there’s more going on sport-wise during the Paralympics than the Olympics (actually, there was nothing going on during the Olympics so it was easy) with the ice hockey Olympic Qualifier, athletics (Diamond League’s), flag football World Championships, and the US Open in tennis (although I probably won’t be watching the majority of it, only the first round and the men’s and women’s singles finals)

I would prefer to keep equestrian in so that in about 20+ years time, I'll still be able to see people older than me in the Olympics and I won't feel too old .

Part 2 (Part 3 is para swimming-athletics, Part 4 is a rundown of my predictions)

Part 1 Here

Para Judo

Priscilla Gagne - Women’s 57kg J1: Rio 2016/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Tokyo 2020 silver medalist (both in 52kg), 2022 Baku World Championships silver medalist, 2023 Birmingham World Championships 5th, Bronze at the 2024 Heidelberg Para Judo Grand Prix, WR #5

Priscilla Gagne is coming into these Paralympics as a medal contender yet again, only this time in a different weightclass. Shi has been undefeated in women’s J1 57kg, so it’s safe to say that gold is off the table, and silver for whoever’s on on the same half of the draw as her. Mutia, Havrysiuk, Amrieva, and Gomez will be her main contenders for the minor medals.

@intoronto any idea on how the para-judo draws work?

Prediction: One bronze (women’s J1 57kg)

Rowing

Jacob Wassermann - Relatively new to para rowing, so no major competitions for him yet. His only two competitions thus far have been the Canadian Championships in 2023 and the Sao Paolo Paralympic Americas Qualification Regatta in 2024

Sitting Volleyball

Women’s Team - 4th at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, Silver at the Sarajevo 2022 World Championships, 6th at the Nancy 2024 World Super 6, Gold at the 2024 Dutch Tournament (no China)

My biggest (and only Canadian) hope for a Paralympic medal! :cheer:

We had a bad tournament at the World Super 6 in June with a 5th, finishing only ahead of France (who probably wouldn’t have qualified if they didn’t have a host-nation quota) but followed that up with a gold medal in July at the Dutch Tournament. At the Dutch Tournament, we didn’t face United States at all, but we did beat Brazil twice. Should be between China, United States, Canada, Brazil, Italy for the medals (odds are in that order IMO)

As for the Canadian names to watch out for, Heidi Peters. I swear she goes on serving runs every time she goes to the line. She’s also a pretty good attacker too. Ellis and Oakes are the other two.

Wheelchair Basketball

Men’s Team - 8th at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, 6th at the Dubai 2022 World Championships, Bronze at the Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games. Absolute disaster of a last year, honestly I’m not sure how they even qualified.

Women’s Team - 5th at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, 5th at the Dubai 2022 World Championships, Silver at the Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games, beat Germany 2-1 in an exhibition series this year

Our medal hopes here rest on the women’s team. Netherland’s have been the dominant force since 2018, and have won all but one match (Tokyo 2020 Paralympics against China in the group stage) by at least 7 point margins in all matches since then, with United States also taking them to single digits a couple of times. Australia, Germany, and Canada are the other medal contenders, but your chances really depends on the draw (you don’t want to be on the same quarter as the Dutch or even the Americans)

Stars of the Canadian teams? For the women, Dandeneau of course, and also Oullet and Young. For the men, the legend himself Pat Anderson  and Higgins, Hedges, and Goncin.

Prediction: No medal, and a quarterfinal loss for the women.

Wheelchair Fencing

Ryan Roussel - Women’s Category A Sabre, Men’s Category A Epee: Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, Gold in Men’s Category A Sabre and bronze in Men’s Category A Epee at the Sao Paolo 2024 Pan American Championships, 11th in the Paralympic Qualification Rankings in sabre and 25th in epee.

Trinity Lowthian - Women’s Category B Sabre, Women’s Category B Epee: Double gold at the Sao Paolo 2024 Pan American Championships, 12th in the Paralympic Qualification Rankings in epee and 17th in sabre.

Sylvie Morel - Women’s Category A Sabre: Sydney 2000/London 2012/Tokyo 2020 Paralympian, 21st in the Paralympic Qualification Rankings

Wheelchair Rugby

Mixed Team - 6th at the 2024 Wheelchair Rugby Canada Cup (dead last), Silver at the Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games, 5th at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, 5th at the 2022 World Championships, WR #5

Canada is right up there with Australia, Japan, United States, Great Britain, France and Denmark during tournaments but each time seem to fall short.

On the Canadian team watch out for Zac Madell in particular, he’ll be scoring the majority of our tries, dudes is an actual beast on the court.

Prediction: No medal

Wheelchair Tennis

Robert Shaw - Quad Men’s Singles: WR #9, Silver at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games, Won the title at the ITF 2 German Open last month (clay court tournament) including a victory in the final over the very same Argentinian who beat him in Santiago

    • GOLD FOR MOL/SØRUM!!!!    WOO HOO!!!      Phenomenal match this was, the Qataris played really well too (their ball control really let them down at the end though)   Probably one of the best finals I’ve ever watched (Hamburg Elite 16 in 2022 between Bryl/Łosiak and Meeuwsen/Brouwer was another)   What a grind it was from them to come back from down 10-13 down in set 3, also having to save 2 MP’s.
    • I will send my votes after my university exams.
    • I'm going to withdraw as a voting jury member. I definitely want to follow the contest, but I just need a short break from voting in the TISC. Thanks.
