Team GB Daily: Day 8

Recommended Posts

Rutter finally misses with her 72nd shot. But that's her only miss and she's sitting at the end of day 1 with 74/75.

Still lots to go but whatever happens she'll end day 1 in an finals spot.

Not keen on events that change their format for the final to rather artificially create drama and draw TV  eyeballs. Can leave you feeling you've the wrong champion (windsurfing) or the wrong medalist (Shriever). Clearly being on the wrong end of it can make it feel bitter but it's not a new thing; it why playoffs suck and why DL final three could never work if the whole result depended on it.

Let's just run the 100m over 20m. It'll be 5 times as exciting.

I’m surprised the individual sprints in track cycling are still best of three.

:d BBC evidently not expecting a medal from Jarman or Whitehouse on the men's floor today - didn't even mention it in the preview and instead focused on Whitlock and Biles.

Jarman is top qualifier he surely has a chance and with recent history of surprise GB medals in Olympics and World individual finals I count nobody out.

The format of the race in BMX didn't change. The amount of jeopardy did.

The sailing slightly more changes, but the race is still the same distance. It is just fewer people.

It's also possible that some of the other athletes might have managed their effort better throughout the week.

Also, if we are going to criticise the format changes, we have to acknowledge that we've benefited from it with Hales upgrading his second after qualifying to gold.

If we just want to start awarding based on consistency, we might as well just award medals to the athletes who are world ranked no. 1 and not even bother with the races here.

I dont disgaree with any of that, but lets agree there is a HUGE benefit from having allready raced on the course literally moments before compared to someone whose just had to watch it, you win the quailication and get penalised for it

Over on the sailing thread there are predictions that soon every class will have the same format.
