Team Ireland Daily Diary at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Recommended Posts

A busy hour or so for some of the less fancied Irish competitors. Mullen is going to produce a very decent finish in the time trial, won't medal but will exceed expectations. Liam Jegou has sneaked through to the semis in his event. Only three eliminated at this point, Jegou looked sloppy in both runs and was lucky to survive. Madison Corcoran unfortunately DFL after her first run. And Dean Clancy, who I rated as probably our tenth best hope out of our 10 boxers after the draw has gone out in R32 v Jordan.

Mixed results but it's enjoyable viewing all the same.

Whitlock 15.166 and Nedoroscik 15.200 will both be safely through.

15.000 has been bettered than 5 so far. No margin of error for Rhys tonight

General question - are travelling reserves added to the total team number if and when they compete? I noticed that both our travelling reserves in Rugby 7s were moved up to the main squad by the end of the tournament and saw game time today. Would bring our team size to 135 if so.

I don’t. We won’t discount the 400m runners who won’t run in the heats or any hockey players who don’t get on the field so stick to the official quota numbers for me

He was excellent, as were Doyle and Lynch and Nhat as well this evening. In terms of our genuine medal hopefuls today went as well as could have been hoped for, both McClenaghan and the men's doubles in rowing look in good shape. Clancy losing so narrowly was probably the low point of the day, but he was unlikely to progress past the round of 16 even if he had snuck through this one.

I was happy enough with our women’s double who have a fair chance of reaching final. Liam Jegou scraped into semi final which is as well as could be expected. Hockey team disappointed (well me at any rate), Swimmers didn’t set world alight but they would have been our weaker events. E enter had their usual dire dressage.  Main thing is Rhys and men’s doubles qualifying and looking strong medal contenders.

From what I can see almost every one of our boxers' first-round opponents has an impressive CV. I've put myself in the shoes of an actuary (which I'm not) and set about calculating our boxing medal prospects, counting number of boxers and number of rounds needed to medal, and to win silver or gold. This assumes that all things otherwise are even. Result: one bronze medal and one other medal of either silver or gold. If this were to hold true we could have a repeat of Tokyo. Of course, this is purely an academic exercise.

I see some familiar names here from old Olympic threads in Boards.ie. I appreciate this may be somewhat off topic but can I ask: does anybody know what became of Dan Man? He was a stalwart of the Olympics, a walking encyclopedia and a gentleman.

I think somebody here said that every county is represented on Team Ireland. I cannot find even a slim link to Derry, Kildare, Westmeath, or Monaghan, unless you credit the Ugandan rower to Monaghan. I believe her parents are Fermanagh and Monaghan. And Leitrim claiming Dean Clancy is stretching it.
