Both Stubley and Glynn lose their last 16 bouts meaning we end on 6 boxers at the games. A disappointing and unacceptable qualifying campaign for all involved, some serious questions need to be asked going into LA as both the selectors and athletes have had a mare.

I think unacceptable is harsh. For a start, there's 40 less total boxers here than there has been at Rio and Tokyo. Not only that, but there has been another weight class added for women and one lost for men.

This all means that there are about 60 fewer male boxers here than in Tokyo.

That is inevitably going to hit GBR harder than some teams as we have historically qualified a bunch of male athletes who then lost in the first or second bout they faced at the Games themselves (no offence intended to those athletes, it's just a matter of fact).

This time there are fewer slots available in Paris so some of those athletes are getting knocked out earlier in the process.

That's an oversimplification on my part because I still think that some of the boxers have underperformed in qualifying. But it does explain it somewhat.

Funding is being cut substantially no matter what and it could even be terminated if no medals are won and other sports justify getting a bigger share of a shrinking pot. There are also political concerns about if that money should be spent on elite sport vs grassroots sport. (Boxing with its demographics through could benefit more from that approach than sports like Rowing).

    • 1st and 2nd place in women's epee + 2nd and 3rd place in men's epee. Importantly, for men they are very young guys. Unfortunately, Federico Vismara ended his career at the age of 27, just like Marco Fichera did a few years ago at a similar age. This is a bit of a problem, because these were fencers at the ideal age for this competition: 27-28. It's a shame to lose such people, but it's important that there are young people behind them.
