British Swimming Championships 2024

I think Angharad is less likely, simply because there are other nations/swimmers in the mix with proven repeated fast times done in recent years. King, Meilutyte, and Tang have all been sub 1:05 in the last 12 months, and then there's the likes of Aoki, Smith and Efimova who have fast times historically.

Without Kaylee though, Freya goes into the IM as the fourth fastest in recent years and the non-Summer two ahead of her have only done that time on one occasion.

Doesn't mean that Angharad *can't* medal, just that it would be a slightly bigger leap for me.

Some interesting withdrawals and selections - no individual swims for Freya Anderson, Joe Litchfield or Eva Okoro - the last one perhaps the most surprising, since Alex Cahoon and Jacob Whittle both get individual swim , no doubt with relay eligibility in mind. Litchfield, McMillan is named already for mens 4 x 1 heat, Anderson and Okora for women's 4 x 1 and 4 x 2. James guy gets the individual swim in 100 butterfly. wilby pulls out of 200 breast, Laura Stephens scratchs 100, Angharad Evans gets an individual swim

Assuming Anderson is simply not 100% recovered, every single choice - bar evans who is rewarded obviously for form - seems to be picked with relays in mind.  Possibly a bit hard on Okoro

Did Okoro get the OQT? I thought she had missed it on the 50 and the 100 so she wouldn't be eligible for an individual place?

From my memory she was still a couple of tenths off after trials and we previously discussed whether they would send her to junior Europeans to chase a time (they didn't).

Disappointing about Anderson although not a huge surprise, was hopeful she could have got back to the form she had last year and really turbocharged the 4x2 relay hopes of being in the vicinity of the bronze fight.

Okaro didn't have either an OQT or OCT to my knowledge, so I don't think she was ever in line for an individual berth.

Guy getting the 100m fly spot is interesting. Means Litchfield has to be in one of the relay teams, which seems a slightly risky strategy.

Shame that Freya isn't fit for individual slots. Hopefully that's more the result of focusing on the relays than anything else.

Whittle getting the slot in the 100m free seems awfully fortunate.

litchfield is already listed for 4x1 free heats, as are anderson and okora in w4x1 and mcmillan in 4x1 and 4x2. they do seem to be treating joe like a liability!

Whittle's solo race is fortunate, but is clearly to create maximum flexibility in relays. Guy is intriguing, but he does seem to have found some mojo

    • http://i.imgur.com/gLJZbix.jpg   Honestly football is just on another level. For other sports, an expanded field or creating multiple host cities likely only works with baseball, cricket and maybe basketball, and only in very specific countries.
    • No streaming for the games in India. I contacted IOC they just sent me a list where the games will be shown live.    Last games we had the Olympic channel and YouTube showing the live coverage for regions with no media rights. This time sadly no such schedule.   So much about making the games accessible to all...

    • I wonder if instead of having flexibility around what sport to add there should be one or two team sports per game with an expanded field (of 16 or 32 or w/e) where the host gets to pick which which team sports (if any) has an expanded field.
    • Dunno if this is geoblocked, but this is from our weekly comedy show Saturday Night Live
    • I don't buy that she's doing this just to start the race if she thinks she won't be competitive.  We'll probably know more after the training run and far be it from me to know how that's going to work with a torn ACL, but if she knows she can't do it, she'll give that spot to another skier
    • And this with relatively small fields, so lots of nations with no skin in the game.
    • It is by far the biggest ticket sales of any sport at the Olympics - even 70% full stadia means about 58 matches with 30-40,000 odd crowds - even the athletics rarely sells that many tickets (usually across 18 sessions full to the brim, the equivalent of about 36 matches of 30-40,000.) and no sport other than track and field comes close. Moreover, it tends to create an easy win for 'spreading' the Olympic bounty, and rarely requires any meaningful new build, unlike Athletics. You are talking, when you add in VIp ticket sales and the usual venue add ons, generating revenue in the $200-300 million range - Revenue which, unlike most of the money from the Games (TV rights, sponsorship, branded merch), goes to the host organiser, not the IOC.   The thing about being an Olympic fanatic is that we often get here precisely because we rejected to some extent or other the overwhelming soccer culture that exists everywhere outside North america and the antipodes. So we aren't Olympic football's target audience. Casual fans who like football - of whom there are a LOT - are.   I do wonder, in all sincerity, if Brisbane might be better doing this with cricket than soccer - or if LA would have been better doing it with baseball.
