Both Anderson and Colbert have the BST from last year. Colbert also achieved the OQT from earlier this year. I don't have a record of Anderson having competed so far in 2024 - but I am not aware of any injury issue that would indicate there is any kind of problem.

I therefore expect both Anderson and Colbert to get the standard and earn selection for Paris.

The times for the top 4 finishers in the final will determine the relay quota with the required standard being 7:51.89. Assuming there's no major surprises, we should be able to hit that fairly easily. Taking the 2024 season's best for Colbert, Wood and Harris along with the 2023 mark for Anderson would produce a time of 7:49.79 but ideally, it would be good to see Wood, Harris and Hope getting into the low-mid 1:57s.

Anderson is a bit of a mystery this year. Also didn't go to Australia with the rest of the Bath camp...no injury reported but without any racing its hard to know whereabouts she is performance wise.

Women's 100m Freestyle & 4x100 Relay:

In the same situation we had with the 200m Freestyle, Freya Anderson has the BST from last year but as previously discussed, we haven't seen her in action so far this year. I still haven't been able to find anything about any potential injury, so I am expecting her to make the standard when we get to trials. Anna Hopkin has already achieved the BST this year so just needs to replicate that in London to book her spot on the team. It's difficult to see anyone else coming close to the BST but perhaps Lucy Hope could be a potential wildcard - if she's in PB territory, then she could challenge the BST.

When it comes to the 4x100 Relay, I'd argue that based on the 2024 SB times, this would be the one that would be the relay most at risk of missing the required BST and therefore forfeiting the quota - that's despite finishing 4th at the world in 2023 with a new NR. As it currently stands, the cumulative time for Hopkin, Colbert, Wood and Anderson would be 3:37.22 - roughly a second adrift of the BST. That being said, we know that Hope, Wood and Colbert are capable of getting into the mid 54s. It would be good to see Medi Harris also getting a new PB in the 54s to give the team some additional options when it comes to the heat swims.

Will be brave to miss the opening women’s relay and on a night with relatively little other British swimming there. Just gives the BBC a nice open goal to start off with a lot of talk about reducing squad numbers one a night where swimming is going to be main focus of the coverage.

Women's 50m Freestyle:

Ana Hopkin has achieved the BST both in 2023 and 2024 so is well placed to get a quota in this event. At the moment she looks to be the only swimmer who will hit the standard - although will be interesting to see how Okaro and Carter perform. Both would need to drop about half a second from their PBs so it may be too much to ask.

Women's 200m Back Stroke:

Honey Osrin has been in good form and achieved the BST earlier this year, but she needs to be in and around her PB when we get to Trials. Shanahan got the standard last year and is just over half a second shy in 2024 so she should be able to get the standard.

Lauren Cox got the standard in 2023 and then produced a new PB at the World Champs in Doha. The second spot in the team will be a bit of a battle between Dawson and Harris. Dawson has the faster PB, but hasn't hit the BST for a couple of years whereas Harris did get the BST last year. Expect the battle to be really close - there's just 2 hundreths of a second between their 2024 seasons bests.

UK Athletics really could learn a thing or two from British Swimming :d. Whilst athletics struggle to find a broadcast home, both BBC and Channel 4 will be showing the British Swimming Championships next week.

BBC will have live coverage of the finals - not as a linear broadcast, but will be on iPlayer and online.

Channel 4 will stream live coverage of both the finals and the morning heats.

BBC are also confirmed to be providing coverage of the British Diving Championships

Women's 200m Breaststroke:

image.png

Nobody has achieved the BST within the last 18 months but at least 3 of our top 8 have registered PBs so far this year, cutting at least 3 seconds off their time. Angharad Evans probably starts as marginal favourite for the event - she's in PB shape and has cut over 8 seconds from her time already this year - but this could well be an event where we have no representation in Paris.

Angharad Evans is the swimmer in form having secured the OQT at the BUCS Championships at the end of February before following it up with the BST at the Edinburgh International Meet earlier this month. Kara Hanlon also well placed to get the second spot, but she would need a new PB to secure the BST.

Confirmation from Freya Anderson. She's been struggling with Glandular Fever, not that likely to swim trials. Dreadful timing, and probably kaboshes Paris. Real blow to all the women's relays too, though Hopkin could cover the two medleys...

UKA had historically a rather sweet broadcast deal with BBC financially. BS are probably happy just to have exposure for their sponsors. UKA probably need to read the room in that regard.

Very sad news. I don’t think the optics will be good if all the women relay quotas are sent back through.
