very good day for :UKR but also for :ITA and :BUL

by beating the :USA, we made sure that :UKR now are going to overtake them in the OQR, entering the Top 4

this changes quite a few things, as the :USA are now the Pan-Am Continental qualifiers, :ITA become the European qualifiers and :BUL provisionally take the Repechage spot, even if they will have a tough task to defend that spot against :ESP in the last OQT (:AZE are theoretically still in contention, but it's highly unlikey they can make up for the points they lost today)

by the way, at the end of the day :FRA:HUN:KOR:UKR and :USA will be able to enjoy the mathematical qualification to the Olympic Games

:ITA are almost there (only a true catastrophe in the last OQR could move them out of qualifying position), same for :ALG (African spot)

the only real fight is between :BUL and :ESP (and maybe :AZE) for the Repechage spot

Unless I'm missing something, :JPN is safe to get the Asian quota, :ITA the European, :USA the American and :ALG the African, so the only chance of having the Repechage quota between :BUL:ESP:AZE is if :ALG misses the Top 16, and that does not seem very likely at the moment.

Georgiadou fell in the quarterfinals, Gkountoura in the round of 16. So if my calculations are correct, Georgiadou (154) is 23 points behind Gkountoura (177).

The last chance will be in two weeks in Belgium. Here is what Georgiadou needs in order to qualify for the Olympics:

-Win at least silver and have Gkountoura lose in the round of 64

-Win gold and have Gkountoura lose in the round of 16 or round of 32

It's very unlikely...

I just did the maths and I think Gkountoura already secured the Greek spot, even if she loses in the round of 64 and Gkountoura takes the gold medal. Currently Georgiadou has 148 points instead of 154 and Gkountoura 174.

Congratulations to both our teams! Great result - we performed extremly well against Hugary today, I must say.

Bulgaria got bronze. So the battle for quotas is not finished for :UKR :ITA :BUL

It is finished for :UKR. You are already qualified, congrats!

That also means that Martín-Portugués :ESP and Gkountoura :GRE secure the individual spots, even though :ESP still has a very small chance to qualify as a team.

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
