I personally think the obvious solution was to remove modern pentathlon from the Olympics and to let it fail or succeed on it’s own.

I'm sorry but no,too much change has been put in to  modernize the event all the way from 2008 for the ioc to go ''Yeah, thanks for all your efforts, but your out anyway'' What the hell would have been the point of it all then .They are free to drop football, there is no reason for under 23 football to be an olympic event

The Olympics needs the U23 Football competition more than FIFA needs the IOC, so that's not happening.

Modern Pentathlon did all those reforms and the sport is still unattractive to broadcast (to the point that where the IOC did revenue sharing they had to create a special tier for modern pentathlon because it was lower than every other sports), isn't practice outside of a very small niche (really hard to imagine there is any summer Olympic sport with a smaller base of recreational practitioners, but I admittedly don't have statistics for that), and it's just on life support.

I'm very much of the opinion that if a sport or event needs the Olympics to survive as something people do competitively then it is not entitled to remain in the Olympics.

The horse debacle has actually ruined the sport on the inside because top athletes were not for the change, and created an alternative federation to try to keep horse riding in.And it is extreamly videly practised, pretty much all countries have someone nowadays who could be in a world cup or a junior competition,so no i don't agree that it deserves to be dropped, and i'm very happy that it's staying in.

I mean, if we are going by the definition you quoted you’d basically have to be either ignorant or a psychopath to not be “woke”. So that seems like a bad definition to me, because I know a lot of people who would not self describe as “woke” but who also are definitively aware and attentive to “important societal facts and issues”.

Anyway:

1. difficult question where the right answer will likely vary based on context. It’s a very difficult debate to follow because there is so much bad faith, ignorance and talking past people on both sides.

2. The death of the slalom C-2 has a lot more to do with the ICF not giving a shit about that event than it does with the IOC.

Besides, you had to be stupid to not know the Olympics where heading in that direction eventually by the mid 90s at the *latest*. The people who were in power in the ICF and in various NFs that didn’t develop women’s canoeing way more aggressively are to blame. The summer sports that developed gender parity by the early 2000s didn’t suffer at all from the push for gender equality, it’s entirely the sports that dragged their feet that felt the squeeze. So my sympathies are pretty limited.

(That and the IOC’s super strict insistence on the rest of Agenda 2020 was a big factor too)

3. Modern Pentathlon shouldn’t be in the Olympics at all anyway, and it’s baffling that the IOC didn’t take this opportunity to get rid of it.

As someone who enjoys watching show jumping the level of riding in modern pentathlon is just painful. It was something that was only watchable with a “so bad it’s good” mindset.

First of all, i say to you the same i sayed to a compatriot of you: not all the world is the same, in my country we really dont have important "racials problems" and the "social justice" has another meaning in my country than yours, if you ask me what do you think about social justice, i will say to you: is one of the most injustice existing thing.

1) You dont have a clear position, ok, nothing wrong with that.

2) I used an example, is not the only sport case, just to be understand the idea. When somebody dont know something, is an ignorant or uninformed about the subject, i really dont know why somebody who dont know what you saying is stupid for that, by the way, i never say is something "modern", with Jacques Rogge and Thomas Bach we can see an increase of the "gender equality".

3) Ok, i get it, you really dont like Modern Pentathlon and it shouldn be an olympic sport, you dont say why, is only question of taste?, i dont like too much some sports and i dont think them "mustn be an olympics sports".

By the way: im not a big fan of MP, just "one more sport" for me.

Nothing to do with taste, there are Olympic sports I genuinely dislike (dressage, golf, sailing, shooting and taekwondo come to mind) who's presence on the Olympic program I have no big issues with, and there are sports I quite like (lacrosse...) that I think have no business being in the Olympics.

My issue with modern pentathlon is entirely that it takes up a venue and 72 athletes that could be better used on virtually anything else. If there wasn't a 10,500 athlete limit and deep cuts across a bunch of sports it would be a different conversation.

Then by the definition you gave me I guess every Argentinian is woke? At least everyone who is aware and conscious of whatever "social problems" exist.

Which is why I objected to the definition, it's just meaningless, people basically came up with a buzzword and then tried to reverse engineer a definition onto it, and it's just too broad to be useful in a debate. It just describes a feeling, and everyone feels it at a different threshold. In practice "woke" is getting used to mean "anyone who's further to the left on social issues than I am", and since everyone has different views on social issues everyone has a different personal definition of what woke is.

The form to say woke in this part of the world can be "progre" or "progresista", to be more clear, for me at least woke= good part of the northamerican/European political leftism.

    • Here's the first update of my medal predictor for alpine events using results up to the World Championships.   - As per Olympic rules, only the four best athletes per nation are currently considered in the simulation (until NOC confirms who is competing or an athlete is ruled out of the Olympics due to injury/ban/etc.) - For the combined event, I just took the best performing athletes from each nation in the downhill and slalom events and simulated their combined performance. I then proceeded with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best athletes for the nation (if applicable) - Each event is simulated 1000 times and the medalists counted. Eventually I plan to do a 10,000x simulations for more robustness, but as I may still tweak the formula I don't want to waste processing time each time I run the simulation. - While I did include the chance for an athlete to DNF the race it is currently a flat rate for all athletes. This currently benefits certain athletes which are well known to DNF races more often than expected.   Overall, this showcases the unpredictability of the sport and the accuracy difficulties predictors like GraceNote have when listing only the top 3. Looking at the percentages, for many of the events you'd actually only expect 1/3 to actually medal more often than not.   I want to create predictors for the other sports so I will only update this periodically.   Men's Downhill Rank Nation Name Gold Silver Bronze Total 1 Marco Odermatt 18% 13% 11% 42% 2 Franjo Von Allmen 17% 12% 10% 39% 3 Alexis Monney 11% 10% 8% 29% 4 Miha Hrobat 9% 9% 7% 25% 5 Cameron Alexander 8% 9% 7% 24% 6 Vincent Kriechmayr 7% 5% 8% 19% 7 Dominik Paris 5% 6% 7% 18% 8 Justin Murisier 6% 5% 6% 18% 9 Daniel Hemetsberger 4% 4% 4% 12% 10 James Crawford 3% 4% 4% 11%   Men's Super-G Rank Nation Name Gold Silver Bronze Total 1 Marco Odermatt 30% 16% 11% 57% 2 Stefan Rogentin 11% 11% 10% 32% 3 Raphael Haaser 10% 9% 11% 30% 4 Vincent Kriechmayr 7% 11% 10% 28% 5 Fredrik Moeller 7% 10% 10% 27% 6 Franjo Von Allmen 7% 7% 7% 21% 7 Mattia Casse 8% 6% 7% 20% 8 Cameron Alexander 6% 5% 6% 16% 9 James Crawford 4% 4% 4% 13% 10 Dominik Paris 2% 3% 4% 9%   Men's Giant Slalom Rank Nation Name Gold Silver Bronze Total 1 Marco Odermatt 22% 12% 10% 45% 2 Alexander Steen Olsen 15% 13% 9% 37% 3 Loic Meillard 11% 11% 8% 30% 4 Henrik Kristoffersen 8% 9% 9% 25% 5 Thomas Tumler 5% 7% 7% 19% 6 Zan Kranjec 4% 5% 5% 14% 7 Luca De Aliprandini 4% 5% 5% 14% 8 Lucas Pinheiro Braathen 4% 4% 6% 14% 9 Stefan Brennsteiner 3% 5% 6% 14% 10 Atle McGrath 4% 5% 5% 13%   Men's Slalom Rank Nation Name Gold Silver Bronze Total 1 Clement Noel 31% 16% 9% 55% 2 Atle McGrath 11% 13% 10% 33% 3 Henrik Kristoffersen 11% 11% 9% 31% 4 Timon Haugan 8% 9% 10% 27% 5 Loic Meillard 8% 10% 8% 26% 6 Manuel Feller 8% 8% 9% 24% 7 Linus Strasser 5% 5% 8% 19% 8 Lucas Pinheiro Braathen 5% 6% 7% 18% 9 Fabio Gstrein 3% 3% 5% 11% 10 Kristoffer Jakobsen 2% 3% 5% 10%   Men's Combined Rank Nation Name Gold Silver Bronze Total 1 Marco Odermatt 29% 16% 12% 57% Loic Meillard 2 Nils Allegre 20% 15% 12% 46% Clement Noel 3 Vincent Kriechmayr 13% 13% 12% 37% Manuel Feller 4 Franjo Von Allmen 9% 12% 10% 31% Daniel Yule 5 Alexis Monney 6% 8% 8% 22% Tanguy Nef 6 Daniel Hemetsberger 6% 7% 9% 21% Fabio Gstrein 7 Dominik Paris 4% 6% 6% 15% Alex Vinatzer 8 Adrian Sejersted 3% 6% 5% 15% Atle McGrath 9 Fredrik Moeller 3% 4% 6% 12% Henrik Kristoffersen 10 Cyprien Sarrazin 2% 3% 4% 9% Steven Amiez
