Tournament Format

The 10 teams are divided into two, tiered, five-team groups in the Preliminary Round.

After a single round-robin series in each group, the five teams from Group A and the best three teams from Group B advance to the Playoff Round.

The Quarter-Finals will be played between A1-B3, A2-B2, A3-B1, A4-A5. Canada will play the 17:00 game, USA will play the 13:30 game.

In the semi-finals the best-ranked team - criteria: 1) Tier of the group. 2) placement in the group - will play against the lowest-ranked semi-finalist. The 2nd-best ranked semi-finalist will play the 3rd-best ranked semi-finalist.

The host country if qualified, or otherwise the best-ranked semi-finalist according to beforementioned criteria, shall play the early game. The time slots will officially be determined after the quarter-final games.

The winner of each Semi-Final game will move onto the Gold Medal Game, while the losers will play in the Bronze Medal Game.

The quarter-final losers will play placement games in a knockout format. The winner of the 5th-place game will earn a Group A seeding for next year. The remaining teams (7th to 10th) will be ranked according to 1. the tiered group they played in (A/B), 2. their position within the group, 3. their preliminary-round record (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. goals scored).

Relegation Round

There will be no Relegation-Round played this year. Simply,

Important change !

Just find out that IIHF changed the Relegation format for the Women´s World Championship. It appears 2 nations (4th & 5th of Group B will be relegated) and 2 teams from Division IA (1st & 2nd) will be promoted https://blob.iihf.com/iihf-media/iihfmvc/media/downloads/statutes/2021-2024_iihf_statutes_bylaws.pdf

16.2. Relegation
Teams in the various Divisions of each Category will be relegated for the next Championship

Season as follows:

i) Top Division (WM): the last-placed team from each group (2 teams in total) will be
relegated to Division I Group A.

ii) Top Division (WW): the two last-placed teams in Group B will be relegated to Division I
Group A.

iii) In all other Divisions and categories: the last-placed team will be relegated to the
lowest group in the same Division or if there are no lower groups in the same Division,
will be relegated to the top group in the next lowest Division, subject to the Council’s
authority to adjust the format

    • Well said Clemsonbeav.  I will certainly agree that the medal ceremony for the hockey was the most memorable moment.  There was a 47 year old man on my couch doing everything in his power not to shed some tears watching that.  I’m sure that one hurt in Canada and frankly we got outplayed (aside from at goal) but I think that was the kind of medicine we need.
    • Moreover Norway, Sweden, Germany, France, well Denmark. Italy, Poland, France,... I think there is no reason to add it from reason to not wide medal table
    • It make nosense for me, besides not being typical winter sports, then how many quotas are used in nordic combined and how many needs volleyball and handball? We would increase of number of quotas in winter olympics, or we will cut tournaments of both sports from 12 teams to 8 or even 6 and having round robin like in basketball 3x3?
    • By cheating. You can see that Kennedy does it in his each stone.
    • Plenty of moments, but while this one is fresh in my brain...   It was the audience singing the national anthem as they raised the  at the end of the men's Ice Hockey game earlier today.   Of course everyone knows about the divisiveness of American politics.  Here in the USA, we have so much fighting amongst ourselves, and the division is exhausting and at times worrisome.  Then, when you look abroad, I see the world looking at us, and much of what I hear is negativity towards us.  (This isn't unique to the current administration.)  That even includes being on forums like this one, whose aim is to celebrate Olympic sport and athletes from around the world as they compete in the Olympics, whose aim is to bring unity and good sportsmanship.   During the Olympics, it's a time where we in the USA come together.  Though half of my fellow Americans voted differently than I did, we all got to cheer when we scored that OT goal.  We all came together and sang our national anthem.  I don't know the hockey players at all.  They may have voted for our current president, or perhaps not.  Statistically, probably half of them did.  But that doesn't matter here.  We even have ads on TV right now saying "For two weeks, we all come together."   My country is more than its political leaders.  (I mean, half of Americans didn't even vote for our president.)  My country is full of beautiful stories, places, and people.  We have amazing athletes.  And when we win a gold medal, we celebrate.  Of course there are aspects of being an American that aren't good...but there's plenty to celebrate.  And I got to hear that audibly today.   When you on this forum see me and my fellow Americans celebrating a victory (whether that's in ice hockey or whatever random sport you don't care about), I hope what you see is us celebrating the accomplishments of our athletes.  I hope you don't see me as one who is promoting any political agenda.  (My political beliefs or who I voted for aren't relevant here.) I'm just a guy that likes to watch people from my country go out there and fight as hard as they can to win.  When we do, it's great, and I'll celebrate.  When we don't, I'll congratulate the victors and hope we can come back stronger next time.   This isn't a specific moment, but one thing I love most about international sport are the hugs that the athletes give each other after they finish.  They're competitors, and they each want to win...but ultimately, they just want to be their best and beat the best.  I love seeing the sportsmanship that is evident at most times.  So likewise, I hope we fans can be an extension of that Olympic spirit, promoting peace, excellence, and good sportsmanship as we all celebrate sport.   And yes, I also recognize there may be some who don't like it when America dominates certain sports.  I feel similarly when I see other countries dominating other areas.  I mean, besides the Germans, who didn't love it when the  sled came and stole bronze in the 4-man bob today?  I think back to the Athletics WCh when  randomly won a shot put medal, I think it was.  I love the underdog story, too, and I celebrate those moments.  Of course it stings if it's an underdog that beats , but again, congrats to the victor, and see you next time.
