it can always happen...fencing is a situation sport, not a performance one, so upsets and surprises are always around the corner...even if at the end of the day it's always unlikely to have an unknown winner...

Fencing is wild!!! It’s like soap opera and sport put together. Also, the ladies are way more civil than the men. Also, I’m pretty Russia and Italy are not the best of friends

sure! non the less, remember that it comes directly from the Medieval duels...;)

the ladies...well, it depends on the girl...there are some examples of very wild and "not so well educated" women (Boubakri being one of them, especially when she gets close to the medal rounds)...

ITA vs RUS...it's a great love & hate relationship...

right now, it mainly falls on the "hate" part because they're the 2 main powerhouses (among the senior and even more among the junior ranks) of the sport since quite a long time, because Russia in the most recent past used to steal our best coaches (and Christian Bauer, the best foreign coach of them all, working with us at that time) with not refusable economical offers just when we were suffering cut after cut in fundings and moreover, because of the political rivalry between the FIE President, the Russian multi-billionaire Alisher Usmanov, and his executive vice-President, the Italian NF president too, Giorgio Scarso...

so, as you can imagine, there are a lot of unsolved questions between us and our Russian friends...but I'm sure that we still love each other...in the deepest (but I mean...really, really deep...you need to dig all day long to find it ) part of our hearts...

yeah, and he's also one of the emerging stars of the discipline...

I think we'll see him on the podium of many major competitions, sooner or later...

Which was kind of my point. How well can you get to know an athlete-coach duo in just one meeting? :p

well, in a given situation (and fencing his definitely one of those), you can easily see if 2 people working together have a very professional only kind of relationship or if the dynamics between the 2 suggest that they might be friends, too...or if they work well together compared to another "team" where the personality of one of the 2 is dominating the other...

or even if there's something more personal (especially the male coach/female athlete duos are often really transparent on their kind of relationship...if they're just professionals or they go well beyond that)...

in a long day at the fencing hall, those things necessarily come out sooner or later...it's up to the viewers, to find out the details...;)

p.s. obviously you can always be wrong, make mistakes and misunderstand some situations...:p

    • Though I did just see that today's race isn't valid for FIS points.
    • Let's not act as if these things never happen before. Serbia's cross-country skiing drama a week before the Olympic qualifying for Beijing ended: FIS | Cross-Country Results - Zlatibor (SRB) 2021/2022   Drndic with a DNF, despite being - on paper at least - the best athlete. She didn't just 'not finish', she stepped out barely 50 meters before the finish, because if finishing, the points for her competitor would have been better due to the way points are calculated. Ended up with lots and lots of yelling and screaming and fighting and cursing, DNS the next day and in the end Serbia sent none of them.   This is not a shit move by Canada, this is a fault of the system at most.
    • Yes agreed, resetting it would help make it more dramatic as no one would be running away with it. We could also set it that there is a small reward for ranking higher after each round… maybe they start the next round with a “head start” so they bring a few points into the next round? But starting from scratch each round might be cleaner
    • I like the concept a lot. My only worry would be that the nations doing the best individually would also end up at the top here as teams are only made up of pairs. Whereas in a bigger team it gives the nations not doing so well individually to have another chance if they are lucky enough to be placed in a good team. Any way we can balance it?
    • I thought about accumulating, but for higher drama it may be reset like in cycling track elimination races
    • Those are the national junior championships, national championships are in Steinkjer, starting tomorrow: FIS | Steinkjer (NOR) - Event Details - Cross-Country
    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).
