Some facts:

 

1. For the first time, rugby sevens and handball will begin 2 days before the Opening Ceremony, with football, as usual.

 

2. All swimming and athletics finals will be held in the evening time.

Not a fan of the gold medal team match happening on Day 1.

But due to the placement matches, rugby gets to work around the unwritten rule where no athlete should end their competition before the Opening ceremony...

Looks like it's a stadium issue.  They're at Stade de France, so they probably need it to start/finish a couple of days earlier to get the stadium ready for athletics.
