Women's Volleyball CEV European Championship 2019

Recommended Posts

Every Euro Champ in all sports (bar mens football) should be with 16 teams period.. Stop bloathing the competitions for some minor benefits, which are not even visible. Poor games, poor attendance, 70% irrelevant matches. And they want bigger interest..

Who thought it was a good idea to have 24 teams? This is not handball, past the 12th team the level is almost amateur

Yeah, I agree... In Men's ECH this kind of makes sense because the level of teams is way more balanced, there's like 10 nations that could fight for a  medal ( :POL, :FRA:RUS , :SRB, :ITA , :BUL , :GER , :SLO , potentially :BEL or even :NED), teams like :CZE, :FIN  or :TUR are always a threat, and even  teams like :UKR or :AUT made big progress lately. Other sports also increase the number of teams participating in the EC, so volleyball had to do the same in order to not lose the fans. Meanwhile in women's championship even 16 teams was arguably too many, as there is only a handful of good teams. And I don't think any other sport has 24 teams in the European Championship, not even football, so why would CEV do that... :mumble:

Although I must say the level of the matches so far is nowhere as low as I expected. (with :BEL vs :UKR being the exception)

Volleyball must have the most busy international schedule out of all team sports. It's like FIVB creates a new tournament every other year just for the sake of it or expands the number of participants in existing ones. Club level play is pushed deep into the cheap seats, it's more or less the same countries and teams that reach the final stages of all these European cups and players take part in more NT games than domestic league. We have Olympics, WCh, ECh, World Cup, World League (or Nations League now) and all these qualifying events too. Does it really help the expansion of the sport? Other than Iran I see no other global men's team that has arrived and made an impact but they basically replaced Cuba which has imploded with all their best players deserting them. In Europe maybe Finland and Slovenia are like the new wave. Volleyball is a pretty niche team sport and that's unlikely to change tbh.

Well, if we're considering Iran, then there's also Canada (they actually won a medal in WL, while Iran didn't), on european level we have Belgium , Germany, France also used to be pretty mediocre comparing to now..

But yeah, I agree that the international calendar is ridiculous.pretty soon the players won't be able to catch a break. I think they should just get rid of World Cup and Grand Champions Cup alltogether (does anyone even watch WGCC?) the same should happen to CEV challenge cup . World league format should be changed -  have one year serve as continetal qualification, and the next year should serve as the "final" tournament, with X best teams in the world prequalified and clear promotion/relegation criteria for each continent. Let's be honest, the Nations League is a complete joke that noone takes seriously.

Sadly, FIVB apparently thinks pushing this many tournaments is "promoting the sport".

yay a win :d Acording to the commentator it was only the 3rd win in the history for our female NT at Major tournaments (basically only ECH 3x 2003, 2007, 2009), last time it was the 25th September 2009 at the ECh in Poland against :CZE 3-2 :d

so nice evening for the girls to enter the nations history this way infront of their families and friends :d

Congratulations to :SVK and :HUN for winning their respective opening matches :champion:Very nice atmosphere in both countries, the stadiums weren't really full but the fans seemed to really enjoy themselves, so I hope this championship will help volleyball to grow in those countries, especially since they just lack one win to advance to eightfinals, which would be a huge success for both nations.

Easy win against Estonia, but we have to play better in the rest of tournament. I very much doubt that Estonia will win a single set at this ECh.

Wow, what a  scare in set 3  At least we won, but it wasn't nowhere as easy as people thought it would be.

Apparently there is again some confusion regarding technical time-outs. In some host countries there's no breaks after 8th and 16th point, while other countries still  kept it in place :facepalm:Oh, CEV...

    • For me 20 medals will be good. And if more there are? Super. However, I prefer not to get my hopes up too much, so as not to be disappointed later.
    • If you're still taking suggestions, I tought the following:   Team Madison format.   17 teams of 2 "riders", randomly drawn. Teams can be named for famous "endurance" track cyclists. 4 intermediate "sprints", one after a voting block, in which the top 8 teams will score according to this formula: (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1). The order in which team score for a sprint are determined by the total number of "medals" won by both members of the team during the block. Ranking will be sorted according to the number of gold medals, then silver, then bronze. If there's two or more teams with same number of points, the medals of best individual performer of each team will be considered to break the tie. If the tie remains, then team's total points during the block will be used to break it. If the team fails to receive a single medal during each block, it will be considered to "lose lap" and 20 points will be substracted from their score. If the team fails to score at least 1 point during each block, it will be an automatic DNF for the team. If both members of the team get a medal from a single jury, it will be considered to "gain lap" and 20 points will be added to their score. A team can only win an additional lap per voting block. After the 4 intermediate, a "final" sprint will be recorded, in which points will be doubled (20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 & 2). Ranking for the final sprint will take into account the total medals won during the event.   What do you think?
    • I don't medal pick, per se... I assign probabilities/expected-values and total them up. So I don't have a gold medal estimate... but if you want one, divide those numbers by three and you'll be pretty close!   I imagine Norway, Italy and Netherlands and maybe Canada will probably skew a bit higher on golds, and US, Germany, and Sweden will skew a little lower... so maybe: Norway - 14 US - 11 Germany - 11 Italy - 11 Canada - 10 Austria - 8 Netherlands - 8 Japan - 7 Sweden - 6 France.- 6   I was surprised seeing Italy come in that high, I was figuring 22-23, but I guess they've been do well on the World Cups.
    • If you were to predict top- 10 for the number of gold medals, what would it look like?     For me, as an Italian, any result for Italy: +20 medals would be OK (if that will include 6-7 gold medals). The trauma of Turin 2006 is too great
    • Doesn't really help that two of the strongest countries in that particular sport are banned from the team event for well known reasons.
