Recommended Posts

Another senior Olympic sport European championship in Slovakia. I´m impressed :d

Several major events will be held in SVK in the near future. The top of the top is ofc next year the Ice Hockey worlds, followed then by the European Women´s Volleyball, in 2021 the Summer EYOF in Košice and 2022 Men´s European Handball EURO

I have to agree with your picks. What I predict:

Group A: 1. :SRB 2. :TUR 3. :BUL 4. :FIN 5. :GRE 6. :FRA

Group B: 1. :ITA 2. :POL 3. :BEL 4. :SLO 5. :UKR 6. :POR

Group C: 1. :NED 2. :AZE 3. :HUN 4. :ROU 5. :CRO 6. :EST

Group D: 1. :RUS 2. :GER 3. :BLR 4. :SVK 5. :ESP 6. :SUI

Semis: :SRB vs. :NED and :ITA vs. :RUS

Final: :SRB vs. :ITA

Winner: :ITA

Notes:

  • I actually think :TUR deserves a medal here, but because of the draw, they will most likely meet :SRB in the quarter finals, and I think :SRB will win that matchup, although I believe they are currently stronger than both :NED and :RUS.
  • :POL will most likely meet :ITA in the quarter finals, that's why I don't predict them to make the semis either, although I believe they are stronger than :RUS at the moment.

  • The top 3 in Group A is very clear to me (:SRB:TUR :BUL), with :FIN :GRE and :FRA battling it out for the last spot in the Round of 16. That's really a toss-up for me, as I think they could all take that final spot.

  • Group B: :ITA and :POL are of course the biggest favorites. :BEL is a clear number 3 for me after their good performance this year in the Nations League. I don't think :POR stands any change, so :SLO and :UKR will battle it out for that fourth place.

  • Group C is obviously the weakest here, with :AZE not performing as well as they back in 2016 and 2017, although they should still finish 2nd. I don't see any serious threat for :NED in that group, they seem to be the clear group winners to me, whereas :EST is the clear number 6 here in my opinion. That means :CRO :ROU and :HUN will battle for third and fourth place.

  • :RUS and :GER are the clear favorites in Group D, but perhaps :BLR could surprise them here. They have shown good results against weaker teams, but I think they're ready to make the next step. Surprised to see that :SUI even qualified for this tournament. They should be happy with any win. I put :SVK over :ESP for 4th place in this group because of home advantage and the slightly better results in the past year.

Not sure if it was the NOC or the biathlon federation (I assume the latter) that put him in the Livigno training 'world' with a former Italian biathlete as coach, but they can definitely also be blamed:  almost everyone involved in that shitshow got the motivation just sucked out of them by the methods and shitty atmosphere until they either retired or changed country

    • Lots of injuries, including often just pure bad-luck stuff like a fall from a set of stairs, illness, and of course the Sochi tragedy in 2014: one of her biathlon friends, young Julia Pieper, killed herself with a biathlon rifle early during the Olympics (she wasn't on the team, but was a training partner of both Preuss and Dahlmeier). Obviously a hard hit, which led to terrible Olympics for Preuss, with a DNF, awful results in her other individual races and a relay where she was the first runner for Germany, but fell early on, got snow in her rifle and broke a pole and ended up losing almost 3 minutes, which in turn resulted in Germany being off the podium for the first time ever.   After that came all the injuries and illness and everything. So glad to finally see her have her big individual global gold, that is so well deserved.
