That 400 free from Galossi is Ian Thorpesque and Lukas Märtens' 3:41.60 in the 400 free was extremely impressive also.

It's a shame Winnington choked so terribly in Tokyo because his window of opportunity for a global championship gold medal may now be closed.

that 3.41 by Martens just killed me...

but the 400m free are stuck on 3.43/3.44 since too much time, so it's quite logical to see them movin' on and set new standards of global excellence...

I think that by Paris 2024 the medals could be close (if not below) the current WR set by Biedermann in 2009 with the rubbish...ops, I meant rubber suits...

Rūta Meilutytė started in the Stockholm meet, it's her first international competition and her third official competition after a very long hiatus.

Having started with the A team in Stockholm, it's a pretty good indication that she is actually serious about coming back.

Big Greek NR in the men's 200 IM from Andreas Vazaios in Stockholm. He swam 1:46.94, the previous record was from him with 1:47.48 at the 2017 World Championships in Budapest.

Kind of cool to see these Greek swimmers in their mid-late 20s like Vazaios, Gkolomeev, Ntountounaki, Christou continue to improve and have long careers in a sport where it is not uncommon for athletes to retire at young ages :yes

it's the 200m Freestyle...;)

and frankly, it's just a decent clocking over the distance, nothing special...

and also Christou has done quite well in both the 50m and 200m backstroke so far...;)

Sorry I meant to say that, his main event is 200 IM which is why I made that typo

And yes I know it is nothing special for others, but for us it is crazy to see how many NRs have been broken in the past few years from these swimmers. Just in the past year we've had new NRs in 12 events in the 50m pools.

What's up with Italy being unable to develop women's 50/100 freestylers?

unfortunately, it's not only 50/100m, it's the whole freestyle sector that's miles behind the world's excellence (Quadarella is just an exception to this "rule")...

for what concerns the sprinters, however, there are a few historical, technical and cultural issues to prevent Italy being a good Nation in those disciplines...

I don't know why? but we've always refused the idea of building up poweful swimmers, we normally care a lot about the technical skills and about the amount of kilometers swam by our athletes, but somehow we're always behind the rest of the world when it comes to develop strencht and power...

especially among the girls and especially the very young girls, there's always the scare to ask them to put on muscles, we normally refuse to send them in the gym lifting weights until they're at least 16/17 years old, as if it was a risk for their health* (many doctors refuse to give permission to the youngsters to lift the necessary amount of weights...and if you don't build muscles, there's no chance to be competitive in the sprint events -if you notice, Italian swimmers are usually also always poor at the start and in the turns, 2 more aspects of the game where power is really important)...

therefore, we have quite a good tradition over the middle and long distances, rather than the shorter ones...and if that's true among the men, imagine how bigger an issue it is among the women...

*actually, many gorls refuse also by themselves to push beyond certain limits because they don't want to sacrify their femininity (here in Italy, women with strong muscles = no beautiful females for most people and for the average media...we still live in the myth of the most famous models rather than the TV starlettes, the athletes are rarely seen as role models)...

    • Basically, NOCs can attempt to qualify in additional events without gaining athlete quotas. For example, let's say a nation already qualified in the 4- and 4x, they can use the athletes they plan to send in those events and try to qualify in the 8+. That's where the extra coxswains will be used. If a nation intends to attempt to double-up they must let World Rowing know before the final qualifier regatta.   There's a good chance the quotas may not be used and will have to be reallocated. Looking at 2024, only  would have been eligible for the men while the women there's . With that said there's no guarantee they would have wanted to double-up their athletes.   In reality we are more likely to see the reverse, nations who qualified in the 4x, 4-, or 8+ doubling-up athletes for the 1x, 2x, 2-.
    • Hey everyone, how are you all?   Reading the qualification document here and the "3 quotas for additional coxswain" is very confusing to me. Can someone (try to) explain to me please how those quotas will be assigned?    Thank you so much

    • In a country as big as , the odds of Olympians being close to you are quite small; however, once I realized several months ago that even a state as small as mine hosts Olympians on occasion, I decided to scour each sport's calendar to make sure I caught them when they come around.  That led me to the middle of nowhere in my own state today, where there was a 4* Eventing competition, featuring a couple of Olympians and/or World Champion athletes.   Most all the athletes here were local or from USA, but there were a couple who compete for   or .  When we walked up, I had no idea what I was doing.  I thought I was in the right arena at the venue, but I didn't really see anyone there.  (There weren't any stands full of spectators, nor did I see any judges...it was time for dressage.). One of the ladies turned around and we struck up conversation.  Turns out I was in the right spot, and they were just on a short break.  She directed my attention to the upcoming athlete, Caroline Pamukcu.  Thanks to my research ahead of time, I knew she was on the Paris 2024 Eventing Team.  The lady we were talking with was the owner of the horse Caroline was riding.  After she finished with her dressage round, she got off the horse and was just standing there talking with her crew.  We went over and had a brief chat and one of the other ladies offered to take our picture.     I asked Caroline if she was aiming for LA28, and she said yes.  I've also since shown the girls and wifey the video from her Paris 2024 jumping competition.  Hope she makes the team this year!   (Caroline has a Gold Individual Eventing and Silver Team Eventing medal from the 2023 PanAms.  Boyd Martin from the Paris team was also there, himself having a WCh Silver and three gold PanAms.  Tamra Smith, who has a Silver from the 2022 WCh, was there as well.  Waylon Roberts, who represents  and has a PanAm Silver competed.  I saw a few more Dressage rounds, then watched them all do the Jumping.  Didn't get to see Cross-Country, but they'll have another similar event in October.)
