We went down from Rio's 8 quotas to 5 in Tokyo. I'm worried that we will have even less quotas in Paris... But we have 3 years to improve our wrestling, maybe few new talents will appear.
Apparently, the sport is dying even more in South Korea. They went from 9 in London to 5 in Rio to 2 in Tokyo... and no Kim Hyeon-woo this time.

PS: team title usually doesn't matter much in individual sports but in this sport in wrestling top nations like Russia, Turkey, Iran, USA, Azerbaijan usually care A LOT about it. I even saw sometimes they lose intentionally to hurt their rivals. (I mean beating your opponent in first round but losing in semifinal to eliminate him and not putting him back in repechage) even though in current point system you better go for the gold because now they award much more points for gold and silver.
In my opinion, there should be a proper team event for a "team title" to have a meaning.

not really. most of Russian wrestlers faced brutal draw here. they were all well-prepared and deserved the gold medal. I think they got one or two dubious calls in freestyle but in Greco-Roman they were very very dominant.
I'm sure I didn't mention Kudla here in this championship but yeah your memory works very well. I just hate wrestlers winning medal by doing NOTHING and just winning by cautions. Metehan Basar for sure and I can add Nemes to the list as well. he won last year title only by cautions if I'm not wrong he scored one "real" point in the whole competition ! and maybe the Norwegian guy Stig Andre Berge. and there was a guy from Denmark Mark Madsen. I assume he is retired now.
but nobody is even close to Nabi for me. this guy won several medals by poor luck. I'm sure you guys think I'm exaggerating but if you watch his matches in youtube you won't find him executing a technique or something. he is a two time World Champion ! he is just hard to score on. that's the only thing I give him credit for.
On a personal note, I don't mind Nabi winning medals since Estonia doesn't win too many and I support them. Although given the bracket I was surprised to see Kayaalp losing to him.

what I can say about this final ?! probably the easiest match of Semenov's career. it happens when UWW does magic in the draw and put ALL favorites in one side. it happens when someone who isn't even in top 10 in the weight advances to the final by having a very easy draw.
Maybe a gift for Russia not winning any golds last year?
Are there any other wrestlers besides Nabi and Kudla you "enjoy very much"?

well there is no women's GR exists as far as I know.
I remember during that IOC session deciding about wrestling's fate, (when IOC dropped wrestling first and made it compete with Squash and few other sports for the last spot) they asked the UWW officials about this and the female representative of UWW said so far women don't show interest in Greco-Roman globally.
At this point I don't even care if they dropped GR completely and held 18-20 Freestyle events or added Belt Wrestling instead.
The matches I watched today looked very boring and I didn't like most GR results anyway.

They are both nice guys. but American wrestling journalists talked alot about that match, (not really Snyder himself) and made Sadullaev extra motivated about that. beside that, that defeat in Paris was the first "official" defeat of his career. and while Russian coaches wanted him to try 92kg (which fits more his natural bodyweight) he wanted to go 97kg and took his revenge against Snyder.
PS: I know most of you guys here think that only Olympic weight classes matter but I'm telling you those guys in wrestling community don't think like that. they will start thinking about the Olympics from next year because of the Olympic qualification process but this year ? no it doesn't matter. a World title is a world title.
Do you know if there are any news on serious efforts to get Women's GR into the World Championships programme (let alone even Olympics)?

yeah that was that rabbit I talked about. actually this is the reserve guy of Kazakhstan (they sent their #1 to Jakarta who won the bronze while Ota won the gold) but refs did a great job keeping the match close. still Ota came back and took the lead but Sultangali had a nice throw at the end to win the match.
and this is a very rare thing to see a Japanese protesting to the refs. they usually don't do that
And of course both Kazakhs lost to Russia.
Not a good championship for Armenia and South Korea it seems but Aleksanyan and Kim Hyeon-woo are still to come.
How come the US team is so weak at Greco-Roman?

2 months ago in Jakarta Shinobu Ota beat Mehrdad Mardani by this technique and after 2 months he exactly did the same and won it 9-1 ! Mardani is a very good wrestler but has no chance against this guy. out of 30 other wrestlers in the competition Ota was the only one I wanted Mardani to avoid. and that was exactly what he got in the first round ! that was a dream draw
if refs don't pull a rabbit out of their hat. this Japanese guy should go to the final and win the gold medal.
Aaaaand Ota lost to Kazakhstan...

but since Beijing 2008 GBR have been one of the top Nations at the Olympics...way better than Italy, for instance (and if we go back not later than 1996, we all know how British sport was...in that year, if it weren't for the great Steven Redgrave, it would have been a glorious 0 Gold at the Games for the British team)...
so, I wouldn't mind to have a discipline or two where we don't even bother to participate if then the overall result is that...
Yes, which is why GB is the worst of the "big" teams to allow such a performance (1996) to happen. Wouldn't happen to Russia, USA, China etc. and the trend can easily go on a downwards spiral again because everything is based on funding and target performances as the base for funding for the next Olympic cycle. If for example rowing remains in the state it is now in Tokyo, I don't think it's going to be a good sign. For a flagship sport no less. Then again, GB has the tendency of not taking (certain) world championships very seriously, which is annoying me.
Also for wrestling, GB had some kind of history in Freestyle at least but as with many sports (Water Polo comes to mind), they let interest slip a bit ages ago. It's not just wrestling, GB is also non-existent in Volleyball, Handball, to an extend Basketball and Water Polo. So, team sports. There's just no interest in certain sports.. at all. Italy on the other hand is at least present everywhere and can surprise on a good day. I can't think of a sport where Italy has no interest in. Perhaps Table Tennis and Badminton are Italy's worst (Olympic) sports.

I understand your point of view and your expectations, but let me tell you, my friend...
you can't even imagine how much I'd like Italy being as "bad" as Iran in Wrestling...
At least Italy has had some decent results in recent years, mainly thanks to Chamizo, while GB doesn't even have any WC participants in a sport with 18 Olympic classes.

well forget my previous post, based on some Iranian sources (who has informant in UWW) the new proposed weights classes are something like this for both freestyle and Greco-Roman (Olympic classes in bold)
59, 62, 65, 70, 75, 80, 86, 92, 100, 130
This one makes more sense but some countries like Iran and Japan are not satisfied by these daily crazy changes in the rules without asking others' opinion.
I wouldn't be happy either. There's no consistency.
Why not make 75 classes, each a kg difference from 55kg to 130kg.
