  1. UNDER 20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sweden - Denmark 6-1 Sweden hammers Danes Swedes seal deal with four second-period goals The opening game of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship was a smashing success for Sweden, which beat Denmark 6-1 at Montreal's Bell Centre on Boxing Day. Alexander Nylander led the way with two goals for Sweden. Carl Grundstrom, Rasmus Dahlin, and Joel Eriksson Ek chipped in a goal and an assist apiece, and Jonathan Dahlen added a single. Goalie Felix Sandstrom earned the win as shots favored Sweden 33-22. Sweden is seeking its first medal since settling for silver on home ice in Malmo in 2014. The Juniorkronorna have won World Junior gold twice all-time (1981, 2012). It was an auspicious debut for Tomas Monten as Sweden's head coach. The 39-year-old served as an assistant in 2014 and 2015. Nikolaj Krag got the only Danish goal. The Danes, who finished eighth at the last two World Juniors, continued their history of futility against Sweden in World Junior play. They lost 10-1 on December 28, 2007; 5-1 on December 27, 2014; and 5-0 on December 30, 2015. Life doesn't get any easier for Denmark, which faces defending champion Finland on Tuesday. Halfway through the first period, Nylander opened the scoring, stickhandling into the slot and sliding a wrister past Danish goalie Lasse Petersen. The nifty 18-year-old, the son of retired NHL star Michael Nylander and brother of Toronto Maple Leafs rookie William Nylander, led Sweden last year with nine points. It was 2-0 at 18:24, as Eriksson Ek, the Swedish captain, converted the rebound from Rasmus Dahlin’s shot. Dahlin, a 16-year-old defenceman from Frolunda Gothenburg, is touted as a prospective #1 overall pick for the 2018 NHL Draft. His World Junior debut will add to the buzz. In the second period, Dahlen, another World Junior rookie, scored Sweden’s third goal, going to the net to finish off a sweet Grundstrom pass on the rush. Dahlen is the son of longtime NHLer Ulf Dahlen, who led the 1987 World Juniors in scoring and won World Championship gold in 1998. After Danish blueliner Oliver Larsen turned the puck over at the Swedish blue line, Grundstrom got a shorthanded breakaway. Petersen had stopped him on another breakaway early in the first, but this time, the Swedish assistant captain went high glove side for a four-goal lead at 6:26. When Denmark pressed, Sandstrom was there to shut the door. He got his right toe on a dangerous Christian Matiasen-Wejse wraparound attempt. Dahlin made it 5-0 at 13:12, stickhandling deftly inside the blue line before fluttering a high shot past Petersen. Nylander put Sweden up 6-0 at 18:22. Standing in front, he coolly tipped in David Bernhardt's feed from the point. Nothing could be said in either dressing room during the second intermission that would change the final outcome, although Krag spoiled Sandstrom's shutout bid on a short-side wrister with just over two minutes left. Sweden gets a day off before facing Switzerland on Wednesday. The Swedes dressed an experienced lineup, with seven returnees from the 2016 tournament. Denmark had six returnees. Danish winger Mathias From, a 2016 fifth-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, missed the opener. He is still recovering from an injury suffered at practice on December 15, but is expected to play later on. Olaf Eller is coaching Denmark for the third straight year at the World Juniors. He is the father of former Montreal Canadiens forward Lars Eller, who now plays for the Washington Capitals. Canada is hosting the World Juniors every second year through 2021. Montreal and Toronto also co-hosted in 2015, and Vancouver and Victoria will co-host in 2019. Hockey Canada has yet to allocate the sites for 2021.

  11. ROAD TO U20 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- More rosters named USA, Czechs, Swiss, Latvia make cuts Team USA and Switzerland named their final rosters. Among the returnees will be Swiss goaltender Joren van Pottelberghe (pictured against Auston Matthews last year in Helsinki). Four more teams have announced their rosters before the player registration in the night before the start of the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship. Last year’s bronze medallist USA announced its final roster including three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. Defenceman Chad Krys was the last player cut from the roster today. “We're excited about this group of players and the way in which they will maximize the style of hockey that head coach Bob Motzko wants the team to play,” said Jim Johannson, general manager of the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team and assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “The talent level in the United States is among the best in the world and the difficulty we had identifying this year's roster speaks to that. These players earned their way on to this roster and we're looking forward to the tournament getting underway.” The Czech Republic trimmed its camp roster to 25 players. Defenceman Libor Hajek and forward Lukas Andel will have to travel home, forward Dominik Lakatos will miss the event due to injury. The roster now includes three goaltenders, eight defencemen and 14 forwards. The coaching staff plans not to register the full roster in the beginning and keep roster spots open. The final decision will be made after the first two games in the preliminary round when two skaters will be cut from the camp roster and the last players be registered. 12 of the players compete in the Czech pro or junior leagues, 11 in North America and one each in Finland and Sweden. Eight players of this extended roster have played in the World Juniors before. For David Kase and Michael Spacek it will be the third participation. Switzerland made its final cuts to trim the roster to its final size of 23 players. The roster includes three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 13 forwards. Defenceman Tobias Geisser and forward Philipp Kurashev didn’t make the final roster and will have to leave the team. Denis Malgin will not join the squad as he hasn’t been released by the Florida Panthers. 20 of the players join from Swiss pro or junior teams while three play junior hockey abroad including prospective first-round draft pick Nico Hischier and Calvin Thurkauf in Canada, and Livio Stalder in Sweden. Six players were part of the team that finished in ninth place last year in Helsinki. For defenceman Jonas Siegenthaler it will be the third World Junior Championship. He also represented Switzerland in three U18 World Championships. Latvia, the team promoted to the top division, made the last cuts on Christmas Eve as well. Defencemen Arturs Apfelbaums, Eduards Fjodorovs and Pauls Svars, as well as forwards Niks Kalnberzins, Reinis Martins Lejnieks, Haralds Strombergs and Aleksandrs Visockis will have to travel home. Seven players from the team join from the domestic yough hockey system while the others play for junior teams abroad in Canada, the United States, Switzerland and Norway. 12. yes the waffers, it´s called "Oplátky" we don´t eat it with garlic or nuts, just with 1-2 teaspoon of honey, then we laid on it another wafre and everyone around the table cut one part of it and eat it. only after we start the dinner with the cabbage soup with sausages, mushrooms and dried prunes. this is just fantastic ! I love it it´s my favorite food. so yummy! after we have ofc the carp with potato mayonnaise salad and we finish with "bobálky" a sort of sweet bread topped in milk with poppy seeds a traditional christmas dessert. extremely sweet ! and yes we eat the same menu each year, and yes everyone I know eat the same on christmas. we cook it a lot so we usually eat it for 2-3 days yes the carp thing, it´s I admit a very strange tradition, but it´s so common that it´s something natural here, the whole week peoples buy carps on the streets. even we do it, mostly because of my mum. she just need and want the carpe for christmas so we have a fish for 2-3 days in our bathtub here one video I found http://www.wideopenspaces.com/slovakian-christmas-dinner-tradition-carp-bathtub-video/
  13. wow. thats cool, I didn´t knew that. I know that in many places the celebrations starts tomorrow, so I´m surprised to see that your part of Mexico celebrate it like we do. We just finished the dinner and we opened the presents, so now it´s the TV time btw if you want to know more about our christmas celebrations and how such 24th december "štedrý deň" - generous day, looks like, here you can find a nice article in this blog here it is http://kidworldcitizen.org/2012/12/12/christmas-in-slovakia-a-recipe-for-medovniky-slovak-honey-cookies/ Merry Christmas
  14. Yes. We will not send anyone to the first IBU Cup January stages in Martell, because it´s the highest situated biathlon venue and our athletes aren´t apparently prepared for that, source our biathlon national team coaches and they will prefer to use this time for training camp and preparation for the upcomming European Championships which are the top goal of our so called "B" team. meanwhile we will compete the next stage in Arber but we will send only 2 mens Ondrej Kosztolányi and the junior Simon Bartko, and only 1 women Alžbeta Majdišová.
  15. Some news from SVK team, After long discussions between our coaches and national federation, it was decided that we must compete at each World cup stage in order to maintain the 10 olympic quotas. so we will start also in Oberhof, but not in full composition. only 3 mens and 2 womens will compete in Oberhof. Men Tomáš Hasilla Martin Otčenáš Michal Kubaliak Women Jana Gereková Terézia Poliaková * Anastasiya Kuzmina was given a "free choice" so she and her miniteam will announce her final decision if or not competing in Obehof in the next days. The good news is that we will also compete in PyeongChang World cup stage with a full team 4 + 4 here the provisional plan of our participation in 2nd and 3rd trimester (ženy = womens, muži = mens)
  16. Since christmas start 24th in Slovakia I wish you all a Merry Christmas, wish you folks a lot of love, joy and happiness, and May the good times and treasures of the present become the golden memories. as I said christmas start 24th here, Christmas gifts in CZ/SK are brought today 24th right after the dinner. Family gifts are put under the Christmas Tree. A common tradition is that the children have to leave the room when the presents are being brought by "ježiško" (Baby Jesus). When they are there a bell is rung. The children then run to the Christmas Tree to try and see the Baby Jesus but they always narrowly miss him! Then the present are opened. Most people open their presents after the main Christmas meal, although some open them before they eat! so once again Mery Christmas

With four days left until the start of the World Juniors three forwards were cut from the current roster: Brock Boeser, Logan Brown and Alex DeBrincat. “We knew coming into the camp that decisions would be difficult and that is a testament to these quality players and the talent pool available to us in the United States,” said Jim Johannson, general manager of the 2017 U.S. National Junior Team and also the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey. “There are still some decisions to be made, but as a staff we are pleased by the team's continued chemistry and unity that head coach Bob Motzko first started back in August.” The current roster includes three players from last year’s bronze-winning team including defencemen Chad Krys, Charlie McAvoy and forward Colin White. 20. It’s two in a row for Henrik Kristoffersen Madonna di Campiglio is the oldest Italian World Cup venue, as they hold a Slalom in 1966/67, the year of the foundation of the World Cup. 50 years later, the event is still running and attracting thousands of people for the traditional night race on 22nd of December. On this occasion, the Norwegian slalom prince won his second slalom in a row, both this season with a first win two weeks ago in Val d’Isère and in Madonna di Campiglio, where he already triumphed last year. Kristoffersen was the fastest on both runs and charged the finish pitch to bring home his 11th slalom win. Marcel Hirscher is keeping up with Kristoffersen, finishing +0.33 off the pace. The two are playing in their own league in slalom, and with his constant and very solid performances, Hirscher was able to defend his red leader bib in the discipline and goes into the Christmas break with the pole position in the Overall, the GS and the SL standings. In third place, Italian Stefano Gross grabbed his 10th World Cup podium. To realise this performance in front of his home crowd meant a lot to him, especially as he wasn’t in his best shape coming into the race. The World Cup Tour will now enjoy a short Christmas break, before heading to Santa Caterina (ITA) where a super-g, a downhill and an alpine combined are scheduled on 27th, 28th and 29th of December.
