  2. According to our NOC website, Tatiana Kukoľková (Table Tennis) is officially qualified for the games. She had to win a tournament in Tunisia past week to qualify, and she managed to did it, beating some huge names as the number 1 seeded Sabina Surjan (Serbia) in the 2nd round, she was even down 1-3 but won 3 next games (the last two by 2 points) to win 4-3, in the next matches she defeated Andreja Pavlovic (Croatia) the seeded number 3 and seeded number 5 Jarmila Laurenti (Italy). https://d3mjm6zw6cr45s.cloudfront.net/2017/07/2018_RtBA_TUN_WS.5.pdf This is really awesome, since the girl is our very first girl qualified for the games, I started to strongly doubts we will have any female in Buenos Aires in total only the second Slovak qualified after Peter Kuric in sport climbing got his ticket last year
  3. OFFICIAL SONG Carpark North - Heroes The official song of the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship by Danish band Carpark North has been released. When some of the world's biggest ice hockey heroes come to Denmark in May to fight for medals and honors at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, Danish band Carpark North will have a central role in the world event. The Danish band Carpark North was contacted by the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship Organizing Committee back in September and asked to write and perform the official song of the first IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on Danish ice, and they were never in doubt about whether or not they should accept – even though the scope of project only became clear later: “It is not every day that you are asked to create the musical signature to a World Championship, so we didn’t really need much time to think about it. However, we were at that time not aware of how huge this championship is, that was something we realized while we were working on the song. We have tried to create a voluminous rock song, that celebrates the spirit around such a major global sporting event. And we are also proud to feature Finnish rock star Samu Haber in the song,” says singer Lau Hojen. A song for the world The 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will have more than 1.3 billion TV viewers worldwide, and more than 400 media representatives will attend the event in May, to cover the games and the “hockey fever” in Copenhagen and Herning. And the song “Heroes” will have a special meaning. The Organizing Committee’s Head of Sales and Marketing, Maja Grimnitz explains: “There will be a huge international focus on Denmark, when we will be a first-time host to the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. ‘Heroes’ will be the song of the entire Championship, and it will be played massively before and during the championship, where a large number of television broadcasters will contribute to the song being played around the world, and in huge music markets such as the US, Russia, Germany, and all over Scandinavia.”
  4. WOMEN´S DIVISION II GROUP B 2018 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ¡Qué festival! Spain claims WWIIB gold, Taipei impresses Spain’s women took top spot in 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group B, claiming a promotion to Division IIA for the first time ever. And the gold medal triumph on home ice in Valdemoro, half-an-hour’s train ride from Madrid, snapped a streak of two near misses under Swedish head coach Christian Yngve. However, Chinese Taipei’s performance as it made its Division IIB bow was also hugely impressive, even if the team ran out of steam against the Spanish. The Asian country has only recently entered the IIHF’s women’s program and it came into this competition after winning the qualification tournament on home ice last season. Victories over Turkey and Romania proved that An-Chung Yin’s team was in no danger of dropping back down; an impressive 5-2 victory over an established New Zealand roster suggested that a new force may be emerging. It wasn’t enough to deny Spain, though, when the two teams clashed in a key game between the two only undefeated teams on Wednesday night. The host nation delivered gold in style, winning its first four games to open up an unassailable advantage over the rest ahead of Friday’s concluding game against New Zealand. Chinese Taipei went into Wednesday’s showdown hoping for a victory that would secure back-to-back promotions; instead Spain produced a comprehensive 6-1 victory to eliminate its last remaining rival and clinch top spot for itself. It wasn’t just the win, it was the manner of it that impressed. Going into the game, there was little to choose between the teams. Chinese Taipei had the more productive offence, Spain was proving almost impossible to score on. Chinese Taipei had its chances early on, with back-to-back power plays putting Spain under pressure. But once the home team got in front in the 13th minute, there was only one winner. Sara Danielsson, a dual-national Swedish-Spaniard born in Madrid and playing for Majadahonda, another team on the outskirts of the capital, got the opener when she finished off a well-worked move involving Elena Alvarez and Vega Munoz. Soon it was 2-0: the shots rained in on Tzu-Ting Hsu’s net, and after Ainhoa Merino’s effort was pushed onto the post, Paula Moreno stuffed home the rebound. In the second period, Spain took complete control. Marta Martin’s low shot crept inside Hsu’s near post then Merino scored herself after Vanesa Abrisqueta battled away on the slot. Vanesa’s sister Leticia added a fifth late in the frame as the party started in earnest among a home crowd that realised the outcome was beyond doubt. “¡Qué festival!” cried the jubilant commentator. Spain’s women were making history. The final frame was something of an anti-climax. The teams traded a goal apiece with Chih-Chen Hsieh, one of eight players from the wonderfully-named Girl Power team, getting one back for Chinese Taipei. Her Girl Power team-mate Hui-Chen Yeh led the Taipei scoring with 8+2=10 points from those first four games. Spain had the final say: Danielsson got her second of the night when she fired Munoz’s pass to the top shelf with nine minutes to play. After two near misses, the Spanish had their gold. There’s a strong Swedish connection to the Spanish success. Goalie Alba Gonzalo, born in Barcelona, took the brave step of heading north in 2016 as a 19-year-old. After a season in Finland, she moved on to HV71 Jonkoping in Sweden, joining the same roster as Olympians Fanny Rask (Sweden), Riikka Valila, Sanni Hakala and Rosa Lindstedt (all Finland), and Switzerland’s Sabrina Zollinger. Back in her homeland on international duty, Gonzalo, now 20, had an impressive tournament. In the first four games, Spain allowed just three goals; Gonzalo, despite sitting out two periods of the 12-0 blow-out against Turkey, had a 95.16% save percentage and delivered another solid display in that crucial victory over Chinese Taipei. Gonzalo’s decision to head north, meanwhile, was inspired by Spain’s head coach Yngve. The Swede has brought a wealth of experience to this job since he arrived in 2016. His career includes more than a decade on the coaching staff of Sweden’s women’s team, picking up an Olympic bronze medal along the way. He’s also worked with Austria and Hong Kong, plus college teams in the USA. After taking on the Spanish job, he twice missed out on promotion by a single point – edged by the Australians on home ice in Jaca in 2016 and beaten by Mexico a year later in Iceland. This time, though, there was no mistake. Spain, ever present in Division IIB since 2012, took the honours and moves up a level for next season. Results Thread
  5. MEN´S CHALLENGE CUP OF ASIA DIVISION I 2018 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gold #3 for Malaysia Men’s team wins on home ice as well Winning gold is nice. Winning it with three different national teams in a season is great. And doing so three times on home ice, that’s sweet. Malaysia ends its first season with a full-size ice rink with all it could ask for in the three IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia tournaments the country participated. The season with the new Malaysia National Ice Skating Stadion at the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur started in August with the arena’s inauguration at the Southeast Asian Games where the home team took bronze. Since then the Malaysians have seized on their opportunity to practise and play the sport on a regular-size ice sheet for the first time. The juniors beat countries usually stronger than them in senior hockey such as the United Arab Emirates, Kyrgyzstan and the Philippines to win the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U20 Challenge Cup of Asia. Earlier this month the women’s team won the Challenge Cup of Asia’s Division I competition on home ice as well and now the men repeated with Division I gold. Malaysia confirmed its top-seed position and swept through the preliminary round with wins against Indonesia (12-0), Macau (7-1) and India (10-1). It then beat Indonesia 12-4 in the semi-final where it faced Macau. Macau, a special administrative region of China that was part of Portugal until 1999, had a bad start into the tournaments with losses against India (3-0) and Malaysia (7-1). But the players who normally compete on a small-size rink in an amusement park improved as the tournament went on. They beat Indonesia 5-2 and then avenged the opening-loss by beating India 4-2 in the semi-final game. Macau opened a 2-0 lead when Chong Man Kong and Kim Hei Mok scored two first-period goals within a span of 43 seconds. India tied the game with third-period goals from forward Rigzin Norboo and Tsewang Dorjay but a five-minute major penalty against Rinchen Tundup with 5:52 left was the beginning of the end for India’s dreams of the final. Chon Kong Leong and Chou Tek Fong scored power-play goals to lead Macau to a 4-2 win. The final game was a fast-solved affair. Three goals between 3:49 and 4:15 gave Malaysia a three-goal lead and the home team was never in danger of losing it, eventually skating away with a 7-2 gold medal game victory against Macau to win the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia Division I. Indonesia took the bronze medals after beating India for third place, 4-1. Ronald Wijaya scored two goals including the opening marker in the first period and the fourth with 19 seconds left in the game. As the tournament, also the scoring stats were dominated by Malaysia with the top-five entries. Ban Kin Loke was the scoring leader with 19 points (10+9) in five games, same as tournament MVP Chee Ming Bryan Lim (8+11). Macau’s Chong Man Kong was the best non-Malaysian scorer, sixth with six points (3+3). Rinchen Tundup, the “Indian Gretzky” wearing number 99, was sixth in goal scoring with four goals. The season in the series of Asian tournaments will end with the top division of the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Challenge Cup of Asia that begins on Tuesday. It will be the first IIHF tournament ever played in the Philippines. Mongolia, Thailand, Singapore, Kuwait and the Philippines will battle it out at the SM Mall of Asia Ice Skating Rink in Manila.
