  1. Iran wanted to vote for the North American bid but after Trump's treat they preferred to vote for none
  2. I'm waatching the FIBA America U18 Champs, USA-Panama and guess what, USA just finished the 1st quarter 43-0 ?!!!!!!! I don't know if it happened before or this is a record. but at least I don't remember such thing. based on previous results they were not supposed to lose like that !
  3. thanks. so the current ranking matters after all ! I have to check the ranking how many Iranians are in top 50. I wonder if our federation has the motive and the budget to send them all to the next Karate-1 events.
  4. That was an interesting tournament for the Iranians. since Istanbul is the next door, they sent a big delegation and while some of our veterans lost badly, we had some new faces in the final, to be honest I never heard the name of some of them ! while this is indeed a good thing, but for Olympic qualification we need someone to be consistent in all tournaments. winning medals by different athletes doesn't help ! but they were Iranians in all 5 male kumitee events with 3 gold and 2 silver. (and 3 bronze) female team was disappointing with just a bronze by Khaksar. and of course we already gave up trying in Kata. I wonder if there is any limitation about the number of athletes per country in this Karate-1 events ?
  5. Is this Karate-1 tournament in Turkey the first competition counted toward the Olympic qualification ranking ?
  6. I don't think they have a new coach, they started their progress few years ago and they are getting better and better.
  7. in a genius decision, our TKD federation decided to not participate in this GP
  8. I think Italy is the best team in the world right now, they beat two very strong teams this weekend. as for Iran, that was a disastrous weekend losing to Japan but I think we have to lower our expectations about Iranian volleyball.
  9. Actually the second competition and not only for the women's team. their results were really bad until today specially in Air Rifle events. (no finalists in World Cups until today) new coach new system they say it takes time for shooters to adopt, Asian Games is their main competition this year. which is no easier than the World Competitions considering the level of China, Korea, India etc.
  10. Didn't except this, Iranian shooters were disastrous in this year World Cups. I lost hope even for one medal for Asian Games later this year. but you never know what will happen in shooting.
  11. Carlos Queiroz never fails to surprise , he announced his 23+1 man squad and surprised everybody by dropping 2 possible starters and created unnecessary problems for the team. now everybody talks about those players. Iran didn't concede a single goal in 9 out 10 AFC qualifiers and now he dropped the backbone of that defense who was Iran NT starter for 10 years , that guy just had a heroic performance for his club (which is the most popular club in Iran) in AFC Champions League playoff match with a 89th minute goal. he also dropped the best player of Iran league (coming from another big big club here) I always liked Queiroz but just can't understand this, when he has problems with some club coaches he acts like this by dropping their players. turning them against their coach/club etc. of course I don't think two players can change much in the field but dropping popular players without a logical reason will have consequences. there are so many questions about Queiroz list but we will have a player in our squad who didn't play football for a year !! he was clubless for 6 months and injured for another 6 months ! or for example he invited a guy from MLS but then dropped him before poor guy even land in Tehran airport ! but on the positive side, nobody can analyze this Iran team, because even Queiroz himself doesn't know who is going to start vs Morocco
  12. my weekly news * We had the Asian Cadet Wrestling Championship last weekend, Iran won the team title in both Freestyle and Greco competitions. in Greco Iran won 4 Gold. 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals while in Freestyle Iran was even better with 6 golds and 2 bronze medals. and most importantly they won all possible quotas for the Youth Olympics, maximum two in each style. * Iran won the Asian Women's Futsal Championship trophy for the 2nd time in a row. they had a good draw and easily advanced to the final but beating Japan in the final 5-2 was a very good result. with this result Iran apparently qualified a girls futsal team for the Youth Olympics but looks like only one futsal team can go to the competition. and Iran will pick the boys team which is much stronger. * Mojtaba Abdeini won a bronze medal in Moscow Grand Prix in Sabre Fencing. which is his second individual medal at a Grand Prix. with this medal he is back to the top 16 in World Ranking, alongside our other fencer Ali Pakdaman * The most important event of the week was the Iran Wrestling team trials. UWW website had a long report about this, I don't need to post results here https://unitedworldwrestling.org/article/hassan-yazdani-wins-iran-team-trials-abdevali-disqualified I'm really disappointed with the results and level of the competition, so many big names missed the trials and based on the new announcement all of them will miss the Asian Games and the World Championship. there won't be a second chance for anybody. as mentioned in the article, the biggest news was Abdevali's disqualification, World Champion and Olympic bronze medalist had a fight in his second bout , got disqualified and today they banned him for six months.
  13. apparently Iranian officials were told by AFC that they have to pick one team to send to YOG in Futsal. which Iran will pick the boys team for sure . I can't see that in official qualification documents. maybe AFC's internal rule ?!
  14. Asian Cadet Wrestling, quotas in Women's wrestling (two sports per event) 43kg: 49kg: 57kg: 65kg: 74kg: Japan won gold in all Youth Olympics weights, now they have to pick two weights ! they also held extra 3rd place matches between bronze medalists in case they needed a 3rd wrestlers to qualify in that weight. and freestyle results. Iran qualified in 3 weights, which means they have to drop one of them 48kg: 55kg: 65kg: (2nd place ) 80kg: (2nd place ) 110kg: (2nd place ) personally I expect Iran to drop 80kg quota. it will also depend on other continent results. I would prefer to avoid Russia !
  15. Looks like Milad Beigi is not invincible anymore. he was untouchable last year but now he is losing here and there. no surprise. Iranian athletes can't stay on top for a big while . also interesting to see Dina Pouryounes winning a medal for the Netherlands. the last time she was in Iran NT she accused the Korean coach of Iran of flogging her !! not sure if that's enough for being a refugee even though you always can lie. Nur Tatar also has Iranian citizenship now as she is married to an Iranian taekwondo former NT member Mehran Askari (niece of our NT coach) . but she is not going to represent Iran instead we will see her husband in Turkish national team soon.
  16. Always nice to win a medal at a WC/GP. it doesn't happen everyday for Iran. even though Pakdaman lost a winnable match to Curatoli but that's fencing. Abedini had to beat two Olympic Champions to be on the podium after a while. but South Korea is getting better and better in Sabre, this guy Oh Sang-uk is even better than Kim and Gu. I was secretly hoping for a gold medal in Fencing in Asian Games 2018 but that looks impossible because of South Korea. they are just too good.
  17. Asian Cadet Wrestling, quotas in Greco-Roman 45kg: 51kg: 60kg: 71kg: 92kg:
  18. Japan received the Wild Card for the 2019 World Championship http://www.ihf.info/en-us/mediacentre/news/newsdetails.aspx?ID=5650 just because they are the Olympic host ?!
  19. Iran and Japan qualified to the final of AFC women's futsal championship and therefore qualified for the Youth Olympics
  20. Iran NOC announced the complete list of sports and number of athletes they are going to send to the 2018 Asian Games. they list this by national federations for example we have the same federation for Canoeing, Rowing and Sailing or one federation for "other" martial arts sports (which doesn't have separate federations) and one for "other sports" they call it IFSA. some federations are already upset about their quotas. for example Cycling wants more after their recent success at the Asian MTB Champs or in Gymnastics they said they will either send a full team or nobody ! but here is the list. more or less the final list. in most sports ,they only send athletes who are capable of fighting for medals. they made some exceptions for few like Badminton, Tennis and Swimming and also they were less strict for female athletes as they want to develop women's program on those sports. I checked it with our 2014 delegation, we are sending all 24 sports we sent to Incheon 2014 plus few more. beside "new sports" we are going back in Water Polo and Equestrian after 12 years. in Squash after 1998. Triathlon is the only debutant from existing sports !! 1. Cycling (Road, Track and MTB): 9M + 2W 2. Shooting: 8M + 10W 3. Canoeing, Rowing and Sailing: 21M + 16W 4. Aquatics 4.1. Swimming: 5M 4.2. Indoor: 14M 24.2. Beach: 4M 25. Handball: 16M 26. Squash: 3M + 2W 27. Triathlon: 1W 28. Tennis: 3M + 3W 29. Badminton: 1M + 1W 30. Paragliding: 2M + 1W TOTAL: 392 men + 136 women + 8 riders (gender TBD) = 536
  21. I just watched 92kg final and damn I can't believe this is Sadualev I was watching ! he almost lost to Sharifov. I know Sharifov is an Olympic champion himself but he is not that great anymore. when I saw the result I thought maybe Sadulaev didn't try hard intentionally to humiliate Sharifov because Sharifov is also from Dagestan same as Sadulaev but now I watched the match Sharifov almost had a takedown in last few seconds. Sadulaev was unstoppable back in 2015, he was still great in Rio but he is getting weaker since then, apparently marriage didn't work well for him I still believe he is the best wrestler in the world but he is not unbeatable anymore.
  22. Bad news is bad, but uncertainty is worse. so I guess this is at least better than 3 months ago. we talk a lot about all these things in our daily life so I don't really enjoy to talk/write about politics here. but I believe hardliners in Iran slept much happier tonight, now they can rightfully say "see, we told you USA is untrustable" Rouhani had full support from the people for the deal but I'm afraid it will be hard to imagine such support for any kind of agreement with the USA in future. Rouhani is already a weak president, if he can't save the deal I'm afraid the turnout will be very low for the next election in Iran which means another stupid hardliner like Ahmadinejad in office and another dark eight years for Iran And this is funny they are blaming Iran for meddling in other country's business, the reason we have this corrupt regime in Iran right now is what USA did in Iran during the Mosaddegh time. they prevented a democratic change in Iran to keep their puppet dictator in power. Dictators are only bad when they are not friends with owner of the world, USA.
  23. I noticed I didn't update this thread for a LONG LONG time. almost a year ago, from now I'm going to give weekly updates about important sport news about Iran. in next few months most news about Iran will be about the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. * Iran national Handball team has a new coach Zoran Kastratovic from Montenegro (also Macedonia) they had to change the coach after the disastrous Asian Championship in South Korea. they had high hopes to even win the gold but finished 5th instead and missed the World Championship once again, as I always say our handball never fails to disappoint ! Kastratovic will coach Iran at the Asian Games. it's not clear if we can have all of our foreign based players or not for that tournament. * Zlatko Kranjcar from Croatia is the new head coach of Iran U23 Football team. he didn't sign anything yet but that's a done deal. he was supposed to take this job 4 years ago for 2016 Olympics qualifier but the sport ministry rejected that idea because they claim he is usually "drunk" !! (Kranjcar was coaching Iranian clubs for a while) * Iran finished 2nd in second division of World Team Table Tennis Championship and promoted to the first division for the first time ever. After humiliating defeat to Kazakhstan in 1st round they just woke up and beat USA, Spain, Luxembourg, Netherlands and Ukraine before losing the final to Hungary 3-2. Noshad Alamian was the key player for Iran he also improved his World Ranking and is now #59 in the world. * During the Asian Mountain Bike Cycling Championship in the Philippines, Iran won two medals in Cross-Country events for the first time ever. Faraz Shokri won the men's silver and Faranak Partoazar won bronze in women's elite Cross-Country. if I'm not wrong Partoazar had won a bronze medal in a mixed relay CC team event before but if we don't consider that this bronze medal is the first ever medal for Iranian women in Asian Cycling Championship in senior level. * We will have the Iranian national team trials in Wrestling starting from tomorrow, this is most important wrestling competition in Iran and very important to determine the national team members for the Asian Games and the World Championship. but most of Iranian top wrestlers (2016 Olympic medalists) already withdrew from the competition for different reasons mostly injuries. last year Iran won only and only one medal in freestyle and the situation doesn't look any better this year specially in freestyle. * We are getting close to the Asian Games, the Iran NOC announced the list of sports for Iran to participate. this is a very long list Iran will participate in most of the sports . almost all of them except Badminton, Baseball (softball), Golf, Bridge, Hockey, Jet Ski, Paragliding, Modern Pentathlon, Rugby, Soft Tennis and Synchro Swimming. this is interesting that Iran is going to send athletes in Tennis ! Iran just relegated to the 3rd division of Davis Cup and Iranian players won't last even one round in the draw ! another interesting sport is Equestrian, apparently that lucky bronze at the AIMAG in Turkmenistan gave them a wrong idea about our level in this sport. and surprisingly Iran is going to send riders (male and female) to all 3 events ! I didn't even know we have Dressage and Eventing in Iran !
  24. Results of the 2018 Asian Championships http://accasia.org/event/24th-asian-mountain-bike-championships for the first time Iran won two medals in Olympic events here, Silver in men's elite cross-country and bronze in women's elite cross-country. I thought this is a surprising result then I checked the World Ranking and surprisngly Iran is Rank 1 in Asia in both men's and women's elite !! so winning bronze and silver is not a surprise but how come ?! cross-country is quite new in Iran . is Asia this weak in CC ? btw, Faranak Partoazar's bronze medal in Women's CC is the first ever medal won by Iranian girls in an Asian Cycling Senior Championship. I consider this a big achievement because women's cycling is new in Iran and beside that Iranian girls are in disadvantage with those crazy dress codes. I believe winning medals in road and track events are much harder (almost impossible) with them.
  25. again Russia lost the gold in last seconds. despite all rule changes, Russian wrestlers gassed again in last minute. well deserved gold for Aliyev.
