  1. I think the key thing is that we have maintained the London level of success now for four consecutive Games. This is something that no other host country has done. Compare this with Australia who dipped after Sydney and are only now on an upward trajectory again as they prepare for Brisbane in 2032. Some sports had poor Games by their standards but that doesn't mean they can't achieve a quick turnaround as rowing did in Paris. Sailing had a major change in boat classes and many retirements after Tokyo, while the conditions at Marseilles probably didn't favour us. Boxing meanwhile had a relatively weak cycle in terms of talent which we were probably due. That every bout involving a GB boxer was a split decision that almost invariably went against us didn't help either. If the latter is still part of the programme for LA both sports have the capacity to turn things around. The additions of baseball/softball, cricket, lacrosse, squash and flag football(?) offer more medal opportunities in most cases, although I know some remain devastated at the loss of breaking from the programme. We could potentially have a much bigger team in LA if the RFU resumes support for the sevens teams and the women's football team doesn't blow qualification again. Cases can be made for gaining qualification in all the new team sports.
  2. The US Congress is so dysfunctional the politicians of the IOC would run rings around them.
  3. For me not an individual moment but just generally the crowds and the support that the athletes received from both the home and visiting fans. For me the best Games always have a great atmosphere and Paris goes into my top three of those that I've viewed on that count alone. Individually the look of disbelief on young Toby Roberts face when he realised he'd won gold in the combined climbing will live with me. And in terms of events the women's 1500m is one I'll remember. Not quite in the same class as Rudisha's 800m in 2012 but certainly reminiscent of it. Apart from a dodgy opening ceremony and the water problems with the Seine it was a great Games. Please let's stick to holding them in the Olympic stadium in future! Well done Paris!!!
  4. Oh, we're pretty happy with the third biggest medal haul after the US and China. It's also the fourth consecutive Games we've won more than 60 medals. 2012 – 65 2016 – 67 2020 – 64 2024 – 65
  5. With respect that is not the meaning of fishy. Will you be calling for changes in other sports where one country dominates, e.g. women's basketball?
  6. An impressive eight national records set in Paris. Men's & Women's - 400 m Men's & Women's - 1500 m Women's - 3000 m steeplechase Men's, Women's & Mixed - 4×400 m relays Also the only country to medal in all five relays thanks to the US's ongoing problems in the men's 4×100 m relay! On the downside our field event performances continue to decline with the solitary exception of Jacob Fincham-Dukes who excelled himself with a fifth place finish in the LJ.
  7. I don't know if the US rider is the favourite but that often works against you in the Omnium (and Madison) as you're heavily marked by your competitors.
  8. You appear to have omitted Australia and Japan both of which have won more gold medals than France. 😀
  9. I'm not sure there's anything fishy about it. With their vast population the Chinese have a production line of great divers and it is difficult to compete against that. My only complaint would be that the judges tend to be much more lenient with Chinese divers on the rare occasions when they do make mistakes. Normally it doesn't make much difference but on this occasion it did in the very close three way battle for the men's 10 m synchro where Mexico were robbed of a gold medal in my opinion.
  10. And having got Sport Climbing right I was proved totally wrong on Artistic Swimming where the British duet won silver. So two sports crossed off the list in Paris. 😀
  11. While they help on the flat and uphill Paula Ratcliffe reckons it is more difficult to run downhill in the new running shoes.
  12. Who says you can't find an Abdi when you want one.
  13. Toby Roberts came through for me with a gold to give us our first medal in sport climbing. On the other hand I may have been overly pessimistic about artistic swimming where there is a possibility of a bronze medal, although the Netherlands may get in the way of achieving a first in that sport.
  14. Nope. Both started from zero. The figures for Czechoslovakia are separate from those of Czechia and Slovakia not to mention Bohemia.
  15. The Soviet Union was not Russia but a union of numerous countries. They were completely different entities. How can you simply add their numbers together when many of the USSR's medals were won by non-Russians.
  16. I've successfully raised a number of statistical errors with them in the past. They are not always reliable with their numbers even when taking them from their own records.
  17. Their figure doesn't tally with the numbers won by GB at each individual Games.
  18. Depends how you count the German medal totals. Most tables don't amalgamate them given that having two countries gave them twice as many athletes as other countries in sports like athletics and swimming. Indeed would modern Germany want to include East German medals given the controversies associated with the way in which they were won? As for Russia they haven't yet reached the thousand mark although the former Soviet Union did and are second only to the US in the all-time table.
  19. Not looked at the schedule for tomorrow yet but possibly Jack Laugher if the 3m springboard diving final is in the morning. He's looking in form and has qualified third behind the Chinese in both rounds so far.
  20. Wow, what a final. Until the collision on the last lap I don't think either team was more than about two tenths of a second ahead.
  21. Checking back some of the sailing was located at Meulan near Paris in both 1900 and 1924. The rest was at Le Havre in 1900 and Brest in 1924, so both Atlantic ports.
  22. I've been wondering why they didn't choose one of the Atlantic coast ports where there would likely be fewer issues with lack of wind. Picking a venue surrounded by mountains does seem to present the possibility of more problems. As a result only three of the classes are going to complete their programmes.
  23. Which seems fine to me. One false start can be understood and is forgiveablle given the nature of what's at stake but if the same team does it twice then they should get disqualified. This case was unusual because you don't normally see both teams infringe the rules but at least neither ended up with an advantage gifted by their opponents.
