  1. Reminded me of this guy who competed in basketball at the 1964 Games and then by 1976 in Montreal had switched to sailing. Not too many obvious links between these two sports. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/András_Haán
  2. Take the consolation that quotas are more important than medals in 2023. 2024 is for medals.
  3. Is this what they mean by Double Dutch? Somewhere a Dutchman must have shot an albatross.
  4. Huge turn around in race 10. Wearn started 20 pts behind and finished 20 pts ahead. You don't very often see that degree of change among the medal contenders so late in the contest.
  5. He'll get another chance next month at the European Kite championships at Portsmouth.
  6. They've postponed the windsurfing races but appear to be still hoping they might get some of the other races in.
  7. I think the Aussies' preferred word is whinging.
  8. And finally today's bit of useless information. The first woman to win a gold medal at the OG was in sailing in 1900 in an early example of a "mixed event". https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hélène_de_Pourtalès I believe the image is of her in her sailing kit.
  9. Seven of the ten events. The others are the men's and women's skiffs (49er & 49erFX) and the mixed multihull (Nacra17).
  10. The top three almost in home waters - literally so in the case of the Dutch.
  11. Sailing hasn't been part of the Paralympics itself since 2016.
  12. I was actually referring to the cycling programme as a whole outside the track. Equalling the five medals they got last time seems feasible given the form of the time trialers.
  13. One advantage GB will have compared with 2021 is greater representation in both the BMX disciplines. The other factor for the riders from all countries is that in a lot of events in cycling outside of the track Olympic fields are weaker than those at WC as there are greater limits on numbers per NOC.
  14. With Anna Shackley's bronze in the U23 race GB just crept up to 100 medals for the Championships as a whole. France won 79 which bodes well for the hosts in Paris.
  15. Seems Argentina's cyclists are like buses with no medals until the last day of the championships and then two come along at the same time.
  16. Which I seem to recall was how Tom Pidcock got to Tokyo after reallocation of the quotas from the U23s.
  17. The only way they can do it now is through the Nations Ranking list which runs until 26/5/24. A country has to be ranked at 19 or above to qualify for at least one quota. I don't think that either the Netherlands or Slovakia are in that position at the moment and I'm not sure that Slovakia could get enough points to qualify Sagan at this stage. It's much more realistic for the Netherlands but it will require Van der Poel to compete in a lot of races and win a lot of points to make up the current gap between his country and the 19th placed nation.
  18. That's correct Ben but it means the quota gained in the U23 race is reallocated to .
  19. Can anyone tell me how many paddlers will get to compete in the extreme kayak events in Paris?
  20. Okay, as my confusion grows I've now read this article which implies that the quotas from the 2022 and 2023 WCs will go firstly to unrepresented continents which I think we all agree to be the correct interpretation. However, it also implies that the remaining quotas will only go to NOCs which haven't already qualified (post -OQS). Is my interpretation correct and is the author right? If so, it means that a single athlete cannot gain more than one quota which seems fair. Apart from the hosts it would also mean that a NOC could only gain two quotas via next year's qualification series. https://olympics.com/en/news/how-to-qualify-for-bmx-freestyle-paris-2024-olympic-qualification-system The relevant paragraph. "Once all continents have obtained a quota, the remaining spot(s) will be allocated based on results of the 2022 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships or 2023 UCI Cycling World Championships (in this order) and will be attributed to the highest-ranked NOC(s) who have not yet qualified for the Games, regardless of their continent."
  21. They also inserted Germany in the men's qualification section but that has been corrected by another editor. I have questioned the person responsible for the entry in the the women's section and am still awaiting a reply.
  22. Okay, after all that discussion caused by a messy qualification process I'd say the only one of the three men's quotas from this WC that is really at risk is the US's and they already have one quota and will likely get the second in the qualifying series. That presupposes that S Africa takes up a quota which is far from certain.
  23. I don't think that's correct. 2022 results get priority over 2023 so if there are continental allocations from 2022 or 2023 they will come first at the expense of the 2023 WC quota winners. See the last paragraph. https://olympics.com/en/news/how-to-qualify-for-bmx-freestyle-paris-2024-olympic-qualification-system P.S. Yes it is a confusing mess.
