Men's Basketball FIBA Olympic Games Qualification Tournament 2021
Vektor replied to George_D's topic in Basketball
We don't have free streams for this event, right? I might watch the finals tomorrow if I can for free, but I don't care enough to pay for a couple of matches. -
I see that AOC is populist and self-rightious as always, what a "great" look for the next generation of progressive politicians... The only "deeply troubling" thing about this is that the most popular politician of the youth doesn't seem to care about that the Olympics is an international event and most of the world is nowhere near ready to legalize cannabis.

How many events will your country compete in Tokyo?
Vektor replied to intoronto's topic in Summer Olympic Games Tokyo 2020

This means that this is what we have officially now without the substitutes: Hungary - 168 (1 Archery - 19 Athletics - 1 Badminton - 1 Boxing - 1 Canoeing Slalom - 17 Canoeing Sprint - 2 Cycling Mountain Bike - 1 Cycling Road - 10 Fencing - 1 Gymnastics Artistic - 1 Gymnastics Rhythmic - 14 Handball - 7 Judo - 1 Karate - 4 Modern Pentathlon - 1 Rowing - 4 Sailing - 4 Shooting - 32 Swimming - 2 Swimming Marathon - 5 Table Tennis - 1 Taekwondo - 3 Tennis - 4 Triathlon - 24 Water Polo - 1 Weightlifting - 6 Wrestling) Potential changes: up to 4 additional quotas in swimming with OSTs and maybe 1 or 2 additional quotas in athletics if there will be withdrawals and reallocations. And just like for other nations this is a minimum number as when/if substitutes will participate, their quotas will be added to the official number. -

Well, our current official number is quite strange, which was declared by our NOC yesterday: 175. They are counting all of our substitutes, so it's actually 168+7. For some reason they are still not counting our male badminton quota, I am not sure what's going on with that one. We are also waiting for our OST swimmers. As far as substitutes are concerned, we usually count the team fencing substitutes at every SOG as they will very likely to take part in their event as full members (which is why I feel like it's cheating from IOC and FIE that they are counting 3 athletes per teams). So that's +3 quotas this time as we have 3 fencing teams. We are also counting +2 for the two water polo teams,+1 for our handball team and +1 for our table tennis team. I think most of these substitutes will participate at the Olympics in some way and that's why we are counting them. Anyway, the supposedly official list is here as always, they will update it if someone else qualifies (hopefully they will add that second badminton quota soon): http://olimpia.hu/magyar-csapat-14 Personally I would say that without the substitutes we have 169 athlete quotas. -
19 fős a magyar atlétikai csapat, a 8 korábban kijutott kijutott versenyző mellé 11-en szereztek kvótát a ranglistákról. I guess we will have to wait until July 4 to know what's going on with the OST athlete invitations? I thought that maybe FINA will reveal a list or something today as June 30 is the day to send OST invitations to the NOCs, but I can't find anything about it online.

At this point v pretty much feels like the final, the team which wins that QF will be the favorite.

4:09.57 from Dávid Verrasztó in men's 400 IM. Maybe he still has a good chance for the medal in Tokyo, but I have a hard time believing in it after waiting for his first Olympic medal for such a long time.

That was a beautiful goal, we are one tiny step closer to one of my wishes for the KO stage, which is a v semi-final.

It's really not about that I don't want a Chinese university, it's the massive loan that we are paying is what bothers me. I would be similarly upset if we would be paying the same amount to any other foreign power because I know that our debt is growing and at some point it will break the country. I don't blame the Chinese for this, it's all on our government who doesn't think in the long term and just want to get even more rich quick.
-
Meanwhile quietly Fidesz has made a foundation for Fudan, making it clear that the Chinese university is here to stay and will increase our debt to China significantly. But everyone is too busy to fight over LGBT rights to actually care about something can have much more serious consequences for both Hungary and the EU.
-
It's also in Spain. I guess this is Orbán's next step after all the drama of the last few weeks. Orbán loves to be at war against something, it was Soros and migration for the 2018 election. I think now everyone can guess what's his war is for 2022 and it isn't just about an anti-LGBT law.

Then they don't get to make a statement at the Olympic Games, unless you count participation as a statement. -

You know what the difference is between those political things you listed and all other kinds of activism? The former is the same for everyone, we all get to see our nation compete and get to hear our anthem when our athletes win, it's part of the Olympics being a "parade of nations" where we all get together at a supposedly neutral event with the hosting nation getting some additional perks. It's in the fundamental nature of the Games. But you know what it isn't? Making exceptions for a few chosen nations because they are deemed special. If athletes want to make a statement at the Games, do it with the one way that has been allowed since the start: by winning medals. That's what this event is for. If it was enough for Hungarian athletes in 1956, it sure should be enough for everyone. -

Politics destroyed two Olympic Games. Or more like three if you count Munich. And even now, some people want to destroy another one with a boycott (which will thankfully never happen). Don't open the door to more politics at the Games because no matter what your intentions are, the long-term effects might not be what you want to achieve. At the very least the 1968 Black Power salute was one big moment and that was it. I can't agree with it at the Games, but hey, 1968 was a shit year and it was one moment. This isn't that. It's literally everywhere and it's inescapable at big international sport events where it doesn't belong to. You are not entitled to use international events for activism, the Olympic Games isn't the NFL, it's not your playground. -
It's all over the Western and Hungarian internet what Dutch PM Rutte said... "The long-term aim is to bring Hungary to its knees on this issue" Orbán must be so damn happy right now, they are serving his "war for Hungarian independence" on a silver plate. Rutte must know what this achieves in Hungary and doesn't care. You just can't say this to a nation of people who were under foreign occupation not that long ago and one of their most celebrated moment in history is a revolution against a foreign ideology. One of the leading Hungarian right-wing politicians already calling Rutte a colonizer on the Hungarian national news site and saying that they will fight for our freedom.

I wanted to look up what it would mean for the teams in R16 to qualify for the QF in terms of their history at the Euros and Worlds, so here's the number of times the teams were in the Top8 at the two most important tournaments, with the exception of a few instances where qualifying for the first round group stage was enough to be in the Top8. (since 2000/overall) (3/6) - E1972, E1980, W1986, W2014, E2016, W2018 (6/9) - W1966, E1984, E1996, E2000, E2004, W2006, E2008, E2012, E2016 This means that if Portugal doesn't win against Belgium, this will be the first EURO since 1992 that Portugal couldn't reach the QF. (5/16) - W1934, W1938, W1968, W1970, W1978, E1980, W1982, E1988, W1990, W1994, W1998, E2000, W2006, E2008, E2012, E2016 (0/4) - W1934, W1954, W1978, W1982 (7/15) - W1938, W1958, W1960, W1982, E1984, W1986, E1996, W1998, E2000, E2004, W2006, E2012, W2014, E2016, W2018 (0/3) - W1934, W1938, W1954 (2/4) - E1996, W1998, E2008, W2018 (5/12) - W1934, W1950, E1964, E1984, W1986, W1994, E1996, E2000, W2002, E2008, W2010, E2012 (2/9) - W1934, W1938, W1950, W1958, W1974, E1992, W1994, E2004, W2018 (1/1) - W2006 (4/13) - W1954, W1962, W1966, E1968, W1970, W1982, W1986, W1990, E1996, E2004, W2006, E2012, W2018 (7/26) - W1934, W1954, W1958, W1962, W1966, W1970, E1972, W1974, E1976, W1978, E1980, W1982, W1986, E1988, W1990, E1992, W1994, E1996, W1998, W2002, W2006, E2008, W2010, E2012, W2014, E2016 (5/13) - W1974, E1976, W1978, E1988, E1992, W1994, E1996, W1998, E2000, E2004, E2008, W2010, W2014 (2/10) - W1934, W1938, E1960, W1962, E1976, E1980, W1990, E1996, E2004, E2012 (1/2) - W1958, E2016 (1/5) - E1964, E1984, E1992, W1998, E2004 So Wales and Denmark is the weakest R16 match in terms of these (duh). And is the weakest quarter (also duh).

Yeah, Csaba Sós said that he wants to give every eligible athlete a chance to gain some "Olympic experience". I think this has always been our mentality in sports where the qualification isn't as crazy hard and not really an achievement itself. I have seen a few naysayers who think that it's a waste of money, and while that's a fine argument against it, honestly, there are far worse cases where we throw money out of the window for sport events, like the crazy expensive World Aquatics Championships, or any of our new venues like the "largest handball arena in Europe" that nobody really asked for here, but we are still building it for ECh2022 and to rival with Cologne for the Champions League Final 4 hosting rights. Compared to all of that waste and corruption, at least the extra money we are spending on a larger Olympic team is for the athletes who worked hard over the years.
-
Well, the last team that barely qualified against us at the EUROs with a draw went on to win the whole thing. Maybe Germany is the next Portugal after all.
-
lol at this stat

I think the matches against France and Germany were the best playing Hungarian team I have seen since I follow football, which doesn't say that much given our recent history with the exception of EURO2016, but still, they did their very best and that's the most anyone could ask from any professional athlete. The main reason why we couldn't qualify is that top tier teams have stronger substitutes who can help their team if they are struggling against us. Our bench is obviously nowhere near as strong and that shows at the end of the matches against these teams.
