  1. Is there a host quota available for women's doubles? The rankings list is showing Lambert/Tran at 32 in the ranking but are awarded the 15th quota ahead of Macpherson/Torrance and Yeung/Yeung
  2. I know it makes a great picture but actually the conditions weren't that bad across the weekend - the men's 100m final was probably the only race that took place in driving rain. The bigger problem was probably the wind gusts which we always seem to get when we are in Manchester and which begs the question why were the trials held there instead of in Birmingham. It's a sign of how far off the pace our athletes have fallen that no British man has the Budapest qualifying standard for the 800m. There is no getting away from the fact that when you take out the few world class sprinters we have, add in Kodgkinson and Muir, there isn't much depth to GB athletics at the moment.
  3. That's a depressingly short list for . Re McColgan, she already has the qualifying standard for Budapest (and Paris) so didn't need to go to the national trials - although I think she did pick up an injury earlier in the season which has curtailed her medal aspirations.
  4. Don't see a route to Canada qualifying 6 athletes in taekwondo - in fact, I don't think there will be many nations able to qualify more than 4 athletes with the exception of China (and they'll only do it because of the unbalanced nature of the Grand Slam Champions Series) At the moment, only Skylar Park is in a qualifying position, so Canada would be able to enter 2 men and 1 woman into the PanAm continental qualifier so at best I think Canada will field 4 athletes in Paris.
  5. Yeah it is too late for Paris but if we want to get GBR to LA in 28, then the conversations need to start soon. Unfortunately not seeing much impetuous for it.
  6. In all the write ups that I've seen so far about the match, not one has referenced the fact that with that result, the lads would/should have qualified for the Olympics. Looks like this will be a missed opportunity to open the dialogue around Team GB.
  7. Am aware that all home nations would need to reach agreement but it is the 80-20 principle - the Scottish FA is the primary roadblock to Team GB. There is no point in entering discussion with Wales and Northern Ireland without having Scotland onboard.
  8. Won't happen for Paris but the strength of the Under 21's performance may, just may, be the catalyst to start conversation between FA and SFA. The SFA are worried that agreeing to Team GB will mean that they will lose their independence and wont be eligible for Euros or World Cup even though I think both UEFA and FIFA have said that would not be the case.
  9. To be fair, I think there are always 2 men's matches on centre court on day 1 and always 2 women's matches on day 2 although recently, Venus Williams has tended to be relegated to Court 2 - but the organisers probably assume this will be her last year here so wanted to give her a centre court farewell and given what she achieved in the sport, who would argue with that.
  10. Wimbledon: Stars call on championships to end Barclays sponsorship - BBC News How many of these virtue signaling luvvies do we think we will see in the royal box over the course of the fortnight?
  11. Still early days, but I wonder if performance will be sufficient to encourage the FA and SFA to open dialogue about allowing team for LA in 2028.
  12. It does feel weird that in "traditional" Olympic sports like canoeing, NOCs are limited to 1 athlete per event and yet in the newer Olympic sports, countries are allowed multiple entries. Skateboarding for example has starting line-up of 22, so has a field size similar to that of the canoe events, and yet in skateboarding, NOCs can enter 3 athletes. Likewise sport climbing, beach volleyball, and breaking all have limited field sizes but allow multiple entries from the same country. I get the desire to have the best in the sport taking part in the Olympics, but it should apply equally across all sports.
  13. UK Athletics manages to sink to a new low! Laura Zialor: Injured high jumper shocked by UK Athletics not paying for operation - BBC Sport OK so Zialor is unlikely to ever trouble an Olympic or a World podium, but she at least showed up to represent her country when asked and was injured on the job. UK athletics should have stepped up and paid for the operation rather than reducing her to begging for help from strangers. Is it any wonder we struggle to keep people involved in athletics when the national federation treats them like this.
  14. And I don't know what UK Athletics were thinking about when they pulled together that squad, but it was weakest collection of second raters that I've ever seen in a GB vest. Given the amount of public cash that the podium athletes receive and how many of them are chasing world championship qualification, it should have been a much stronger squad.
  15. I know that there will be plenty of spin put on it, but it is difficult to argue with the fact that the team didn't perform to the best of their abilities in the events where quotas were available. Archery - despite great qualifying round, Monty Orton and Penny Healey couldn't replicate it in the QF of the mixed event but the performance is mitigated by Penny Healey taking gold and the quota. Also great result from the women's team to take the title - real shame it wasn't a quota event. Overall A- Boxing - 3 quotas secured is at the bottom end of expectations but not necessarily disastrous. More worryingly perhaps was the fact that 5 of the boxers lost by unanimous decision. They've got a lot of work to do in the run up to the world qualifiers. Overall C- Breaking - were never likely to win the quota, but whatshisname got to the quarter finals which was probably all we could ask for. Overall B Canoe - Still 2 quotas to be awarded but not expecting either to go to GBR. Jo Clarke showing decent form but Mallory Franklin not performing as strongly as she did a couple of seasons back. Overall C+ Diving - A mixed bag for Team GB with some great dives and some literal belly flops but have to bear in mind this was not our strongest team. It was great performance from Eden Cheng to get the quota on platform whilst a couple of others came close. Disappointing that some got themselves into qualifying positions only to drop points on final dive. Overall B- Modern Pentathlon - As expected backed the 2 quotas. Can't help feeling it would have been better for us if Pillage had taken the men's quota rather than Choong but that is purely because the European nations are going to be disadvantaged at the worlds because there is no order of precedence in place - if Choong finishes in top 3 at worlds, that quota will go to the world ranking list. Overall A Rugby Sevens - It pretty much went to the script I guess. It would have been pretty disastrous for the women not have taken the quota given the gulf in experience within the draw. The men's side came close and they weren't overwhelmed by Ireland in the final but equally they never looked like they were going to threaten Ireland. Overall B+ Shooting - To be clear, the shooting team have done well to already have 4 quotas (5 when you factor in that McIntosh will double up in 10m and 50m event) but they weren't even close to securing additional quotas here. Coward Holley didn't make the final whilst Ben Llewelin didn't make it out of his ranking match - OK they are still likely to qualify although at this rate it will be through ranking rather than earning a spot at an event - but Jess Liddon shot her best precision round only to crap the bed in the rapid. Can't think of many other athletes who went from top of the pile to 32nd at these games. Overall D Table Tennis - We weren't really in the running for the mixed doubles quota. Overall C+
  16. I have to say, presenting the data like this is flattering Team GB. Yes, they'll be booking 19 more seats on Easyjet or the Eurostar, but realistically, it was 8 event quotas - that is to say 8 medal opportunities - and is probably at the lower end of expectations.
  17. Given Choong isn't going to complete the grand slam, the best result from GBR perspective would be for Pillage to secure the quota rather than Choong.
  18. Any British beach volleyball fans - the Bello brothers have made it through to the final of the DEPO final in Saulkrasti and it is being streamed on Facebook
  19. Interesting that with the exception of Ireland, all of the big winners of quotas participated in the IBA world championships earlier this year. All the training in the world is no substitute for actual competition experience and I wonder if having that extra tournament helped nations like France, Turkey and Italy get their boxers "battle ready" Whatever the tactic was in terms of preparing for these champs, it hasn't worked out as they expected winning just 3 quotas is probably less than half of what they expected. It will be interesting to see if they make any changes in the run up to the world qualifiers next year but looking at how the national federations are trying to spin the performances across the last few days, I doubt they will.
  20. You may well be right - my boxing data is in a mess given the competing iterations of the qualifying pathways
  21. That's my understanding too
  22. Based on the strength of French team's performance, they wont need the host quotas. The host quotas are attached to specific weight classes and you've qualified by right in 5 of them so the "host" quota is no longer required in those weight divisions and will be allocated at the 2nd world qualifier. France will look to qualify further quotas at the 1st world qualifier. At the end of the 1st world qualifier the French NOC will advise which of the host quotas they are going to use - at the moment they would accept the remaining 4 (M57Kg, M80Kg, W54Kg W66Kg). As far as I am aware, France will still be able to enter the 2nd world qualifier in those weight divisions where they have not qualified by right and where no host quota is available. Currently that would mean M92Kg, M+92Kg and possibly W75Kg (although Davina Michel has just won the 1st round of her semi-final so she may win a quota here)
  23. Host nations are given guaranteed number of spots which can be used if they are not able to earn them through the usual qualification pathway. In specific weight divisions, if France don't qualify here or at the 1st world qualifier, then they can still utilise the reserved host quota spots. Currently still available: 2 spots on the women's side and 2 on the men's side.
