  1. So 8 days into the tournament and so far only 1 women's match has been deemed of sufficient quality to grace the night session on Chatrier. Alexander Zverev is tonight racking up his 4th night session match - that's the same number of night matches the women's tour have had across 3 years. This year alone, Zverev, who is seeded 22, has had 3 night session matches and yet Caroline Garcia - home favourite and 5th seed - wasn't deemed good enough to warrant a night match. Nor was Ons Jabeur when she took on a French woman in round 2. Surely somebody within that organizing committee has the balls to stand up and say that their handling of the scheduling can't be right. They are making themselves look a laughing stock.
  2. Team GB athletics squad due to be announced on Wednesday according to their selection policy docs.
  3. Russian Armed Forces sergeant stuns world number one at IJF Dushanbe Grand Prix (insidethegames.biz) Assuming this story is correct and Bashaev is a sergeant in the Russian army, how the hell did he qualify as a neutral athlete????
  4. Double win for Shriever is a great result but her performances are to large extent papering over the lack of depth we currently have in the women's event. GBR is the only country in the top 10 ranked nations that only counts 2 riders in the ranking score as opposed to 3 and despite that, they're likely to move up to 5th or 6th in the next Olympic ranking list
  5. Very disappointing result for Vittoria Farmer in the round 3 repechage - she had the highest single scoring wave at 8.33 but could only manage a 0.83 second score. Think she becomes the first Brit to exit the competition - the rest of the guys/girls are in all in repechage action.
  6. The host nation has always taken the continental qualification spot - in 2015 Canada won the Pan-Am games but didn't get a quota. So from a team perspective, this year is no different to what has gone before. For the duet, there is still a European quota available and this will be awarded at the European Games later this month. As per the qualification document: "The best duet with combined results (Duet Technical + Duet Free), not yet qualified, will earn quota place for Paris 2024 Olympic Games" Again that doesn't seem to be any different to the qualification pathways used for Rio or Tokyo.
  7. It was a great result for France but to be fair, given their riders comprised more than 20% of the total in the field and they are the top ranked nation, it would have been pretty surprising if they hadn't featured pretty heavily in the final results.
  8. Difficult to see from the picture whether Choong was ahead when he fell or not, but it potentially complicates team GB qualification a little - had Choong won, there was a chance we would have been well placed with Pillage or Brown to be 1 of the top 8 at the European games to close out our qualification for Paris. With Choong now likely to qualify via the European games, it means our second quota will probably have to come via the ranking list and at the moment, our guys are ranked in the mid 30s which may not be enough to make the cut.
  9. Great effort from British women to get 2 through to round 3. Unfortunately because of the way that the draw has worked out, they will both line up in the same heat. They're up against USA's Caroline Marks who scored 17.67 and France's Pauline Ado who scored 11.1. Neither of the Brits have made it into double figures yet, so looks likely they will both be heading into repechage.
  10. Alys Barton sends Luana Silva to the repechage in round 2.
  11. So Joe Choong safely qualifies for this weekend's final but Myles Pillage and Charlie Brown both miss out. Pillage's downfall was his poor fencing results because he is a sub 2 minute swimmer and his run was 11:30. Likewise Charlie Brown's swimming time is on par with Choong and his laser run time was under 11 minutes but again, he had only managed 12 fencing wins.
  12. Biggest shock of the year so far - Sam Hall is actually still listed in the 60Kg draw for Dushanbe Grand Prix No all we need is for him to win the gold and propel himself into a qualifying position
  13. Find it strange that aren't entered into the judo event - seems a missed opportunity to potentially earn Olympic wildcard
  14. I've just been using the UIPM website - it's not great but it is just about tolerable UIPM Portal (gem-technology.com)
  15. I think GB Swimming's hands were tied by the results of last week's national diving championships and to be fair, at the 2022 European Diving Champs, even with a pretty strong team, GBR only won 1 of the events where a quota would have been available - the women's 10m platform with Spendolini-Sirieix and I think it is a safe assumption to think she is capable of getting a top 12 finish at the worlds I think the working assumption within the GB squad is that they could/should be in a position to wrap up the majority of the quotas at the world championship - I think there is a good chance that we could get both the men's synchro teams qualified and possibly 6 individual quotas in Fukuoka. Our weakest event is likely to be women's 3m springboard. But if the results in Fukuoka don't go the way GB Swimming expects, they will possibly regret not putting more focus on these games. For me, the most disappointing squad is in triathlon - we're guaranteed 2 quotas, but in order to get the third, we need 3 athletes in the top 30 of the rankings and at the moment, we only have Alex Yee. Barclay Izzard is currently 56 so has a chance to climb up, but Connor Bentley is ranked at 169 and Hamish Reilly isn't even listed in the Olympic rankings.
  16. Decent fencing result for Joe Choong to sit in 4th place - if he can keep a clean round in the horse riding, he's got good chance of being in the fight for the Olympic quota. for the women, Kerenza Bryson finished in 10th place - not bad, but probably leaves herself too much to do if she was going to be in the hunt for the quota. For Jess Varley, the fencing round was a nightmare and she sits bottom of the pile having managed just 7 wins.
  17. Looking at the previous results, in order to secure a quota on the men's side, you're realistically going to need to get through to round 5 or 6 of the main draw and then hope to last 1-2 rounds of the repechage. For the record, in 2019 the winner of both the African and European quotas made it to Round 6 of the main draw and progressed through 2 repechage rounds. For Asia, they exited the main draw in round 5 before also surviving 2 rounds of repechage whilst Oceania lost in round 3 of main draw but survived 6 rounds of repechage. In 2022 Luke Dillon got through to round 3 before heading to the repechage rounds. His draw this time around is equally challenging - he's got a couple of decent Portuguese athletes alongside a couple of Israelis, Japanese and Kiwis - including Billy Stairmand who has been picked out above as the preferred pick for the Oceania quota. Long story short can see Dillon getting through to round 3 again, but struggling to see the path that gets him to a quota unfortunately.
  18. I was under the impression that you could only be eligible for the continental qualification if you had less than 2 athletes qualified through the world rankings pathway. Given are likely to qualify with Jade Jones and Bianca Cook, I don't think we would be able to enter any women into the continental qualifying although we would be able to enter the men's tournament.
  19. They're going to have a rerun of the second round onwards
  20. Great performance from Rebecca McGowan - but with Bianca Cook world number 1 in the +67Kg weight division, it's just a shame she isn't really going to be in contention for Olympic quota.
  21. Does anyone know what the story was with the women's high jump at the DL meeting in Rabat? On the live results, Morgan Lake was initially shown as having cleared 1.91m at the first attempt and from the BBC coverage, the on screen caption seemed to back that up but then the results website showed xxx against 1.91 and the Power of 10 website used in UK to track performances is only crediting her with 1.87
  22. Disappointing result for Jade Jones. In a few of her recent competitions, she hasn't shown the kind of consistency that we are used to seeing with her. I still expect her to qualify for Paris but not sure that she will be getting the same level of hype from the BBC this time around (which may actually end up working in her favour) Bradley Sinden on the other hand, just keeps going on about his business.
  23. Bit of a shocker for Skylar Park in her round of 16 match - it looked like she'd done enough in the last few seconds of the second round to level the match but the video replay went against her.
  24. And Sam Hall executes his disappearing act to perfection again - he's withdrawn from this weekend's Upper Austria Grand Prix. Now been 7 months since he last competed internationally in the 60Kg class
  25. Interesting to see Sarah Adlington is due to return to competition next month - she's listed in both the Qazaqstan Baryst Grand Slam and Ulaanbaatar Grand Slam. Neither event has the strongest of fields announced so far so if she can get decent results in both, she could actually put herself into contention for an automatic qualifying spot - it would only take about 450 points to get into the top 17 in this weight division.
