  1. Interesting that with the exception of Ireland, all of the big winners of quotas participated in the IBA world championships earlier this year. All the training in the world is no substitute for actual competition experience and I wonder if having that extra tournament helped nations like France, Turkey and Italy get their boxers "battle ready" Whatever the tactic was in terms of preparing for these champs, it hasn't worked out as they expected winning just 3 quotas is probably less than half of what they expected. It will be interesting to see if they make any changes in the run up to the world qualifiers next year but looking at how the national federations are trying to spin the performances across the last few days, I doubt they will.
  2. You may well be right - my boxing data is in a mess given the competing iterations of the qualifying pathways
  3. That's my understanding too
  4. Based on the strength of French team's performance, they wont need the host quotas. The host quotas are attached to specific weight classes and you've qualified by right in 5 of them so the "host" quota is no longer required in those weight divisions and will be allocated at the 2nd world qualifier. France will look to qualify further quotas at the 1st world qualifier. At the end of the 1st world qualifier the French NOC will advise which of the host quotas they are going to use - at the moment they would accept the remaining 4 (M57Kg, M80Kg, W54Kg W66Kg). As far as I am aware, France will still be able to enter the 2nd world qualifier in those weight divisions where they have not qualified by right and where no host quota is available. Currently that would mean M92Kg, M+92Kg and possibly W75Kg (although Davina Michel has just won the 1st round of her semi-final so she may win a quota here)
  5. Host nations are given guaranteed number of spots which can be used if they are not able to earn them through the usual qualification pathway. In specific weight divisions, if France don't qualify here or at the 1st world qualifier, then they can still utilise the reserved host quota spots. Currently still available: 2 spots on the women's side and 2 on the men's side.
  6. To be fair the crowds have been so small it is conceivable the majority of them could have come from the Italian delegation cheering their team on - but it did seem a dubious decision.
  7. I assume so - difficult to tell because the results system is so crap. 5 shooters all had 121 Originally the Portugese athlete and coward Holley were shown as having qualified but now it is changed and Coward Holley is out and Sweden's Levin Andersson is in. Will be glad when these comps are over and we can go back to professional management by the international federations.
  8. So last day of shooting quotas and last chance for shooting squad to redeem themselves. All eyes on Coward Holley who just managed to sneak their way into the final 8
  9. Kirsty Gilmour takes out No3 seed Line Kjaersfeldt in 3 sets. Gotta be one of her strongest result so far this year. Will take on the top seed Carolina Marin in the semi finals.
  10. 50 point penalty if you miss a gate completely.
  11. Ah right - sorry forgot there were 2 quotas
  12. He's made it through to semi-finals but isn't Germany and Netherlands still in contention for the quota if they get through to the final?
  13. Given the Masters events seems to be the 6th qualifying event in each period, it is pretty disappointing that it looks like we are only planning on sending 2 male athletes to the event - Lachlan Moorhead and Jamal Petgrave. The fact that it is the usual suspects on the male side, speaks volumes about the lack of ambition within GB Judo right now. They could have and should have been targeting qualifying for the team event but it seems they will be happy if they can get just 1 male quota.
  14. The round of 16 badminton draw is an absolute mess - all 8 of the seeded players made it through but because of the pool results, 6 of them have ended up in the top half of the draw with just Tan and Blichfeldt in the bottom half.
  15. and right on cue - disaster
  16. Britain looked good in their win over Spain without ever looking spectacular. Likewise, Ireland did what they needed to do to put Portugal away without needing to bring their A game. The final could be close - 5-10 point difference - but if Ireland bring their A game, there is only going to be one winner.
  17. Well you could go for speed chess - that would make it faster You could play it standing up - higher And you could use weighted pieces ranging from 1Kg to 25Kg to make it stronger. I think our German fencer friend at the head of the IOC could totally be persuaded of its merits.
  18. Yeah - but this is showing who would have qualified for Tokyo at the 2020 European qualifier under the 2024 criteria. As the 54Kg class is a new division for 2024, there's no comparison that can be made to 2020.
  19. As loses another boxer in the round of 16, I get the feeling that our squad is dramatically underperforming their own expectations but given that the number of places available at the European qualifiers has halved compared to 2020, I wanted to see how they are doing compared to the Tokyo squad. Men's 51 Kg quotas in 2020: Men's 57Kg quotas: Men's 63.5Kg quotas: Men's 71Kg quotas: Men's 80Kg quotas: Men's 92Kg quotas: Men's +92Kg quotas: So on the men's side we would have secured 5 quotas. As it currently stands, at best we could take 3 but more likely that we will end up with only 1 or 2. Women's 50Kg quotas in 2020: Women's 54Kg quotas: N/A as additional weight division Women's 57Kg quotas: Women's 60Kg quotas: Women's 66Kg quotas: Women's 75Kg quotas: For the women's events, the picture is equally bleak for GBR. They would have won 3 quotas in 2020 but again, we're likely to win 1 or 2 at best. Long story short, if want to continue their long history of being one of the largest boxing squads at the Olympics, they are going to have to come up with some stellar performances at the world qualifiers next year.
  20. So after the fun of seeing the modern version of Ken Dodd's Tickling Stick in action, the women run out comfortable winners 36-12
  21. Things going from bad to worse - they're now bringing out the cheer leaders. Sadly their budget could only stretch to 3 actual cheerleaders and 8 others who look like they have been dragged out of an aerobics class at the local gym.
  22. If anyone has a ladder or even just a long stick available, please can they get in touch with the organising committee as they don't seem to have a plan to get this sorted.
  23. Most ridiculous thing I've seen at these games - the awning at the back of the pitch has blown up and over and is now caught on the top of the posts. Competition is delayed halfway through the first semi-final
  24. Just catching up on the results of the weekend - hadn't realised that the mixed relay event had to be called off because of the air quality.
