Several teams from Division I Group A have agreed to play a tournament as a replacement of the canceled event due to the covid-19 pandemic. As you know, IIHF have cancelled all lower division Tournaments for the 2nd consecutive year.

Meanwhile Slovenia came with the idea to invite all other Division I A opponents and play a "unofficial" Division I A tournament which they decided to call : "Beat Covid-19" Tournament.

Majority of teams agreed, only :KOR and :HUN withdrew, so The host Slovenia invited :POL and :UKR from Division I B.

All 6 Teams will play in a traditional Division I Group A format Round-Robin, Everyone playing everyone once.

The winner of the tournament however, will not qualify for the next year Top Division, and last team will not be relegated to Division I Group B neither.

Change in the schedule

Due to the delay in the arrival of Ukrainian equipment, the match between Poland and Ukraine has been postponed to 22.45. The game will end around 1 AM

And the match has been postponed again to an uncertain date. The equipment of :UKR team is apparently still somewhere in Frankfurt

How do they plan to 'beat covid-19' with an ice hockey tournament? :p

covid-19 beat hockey last year cancelling all tournaments and this year the lower divisions were cancelled again. Teams from Division I A (Especially Slovenia) said a big: Enough is enough ! and decided to organize a replacement tournament using the same IIHF WCh rules (anthem only of winner of the match after the game etc..), format of 5 day matches round-robin and scheduling like a "normal" division I A tournament. Other teams accepted (remember, these teams are also preparing for August Olympic qualifiers, so they need matches like this) only Hungary and S. Korea sadly withdrew, so Poland and Ukraine from Division I B were invited to replace them and both agreed.
