Indian swimmer Srihari Nataraj came agonisingly close to achieving the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) in 100m backstroke at the 2021 Sette Colli Trophy in Rome, Italy, on Friday.

He clocked 53.90 seconds to win the time-trial race but was 0.05 seconds short of the OQT set at 53.85 seconds for the Tokyo Olympics.

The Bengaluru-based athlete is one of the two swimmers recommended by the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) for the Tokyo Games under the universality quota.

The Indian men’s 4x400m relay team of Muhammed Anas, Amoj Jacob, Arokia Rajiv and Noah Nirmal Tom edged closer to a Tokyo Olympics berth with a fine performance at the 60th National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships.

The Indian quartet clocked 3:01.89s to win their heats at the National Institute of Sports in Patiala.

The run is set to lift them up to the 13th spot on World Athletics’ Road to Olympic Games 2020 rankings. They were previously on 16th, courtesy a 3:02.59s run at a meet in Turkey back in 2019.

The national tennis federation (AITA) has requested the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to consider Ankita Raina's bronze-medal winning performance at the 2018 Asian Games for a place in the women's singles draw of the Tokyo Olympics since the gold and silver medallists from China are eligible for a direct entry due to their higher ranks.

It remains to be seen if Rohan Bopanna (38) and Divij Sharan (75) will get entry in the men's doubles. Their combined rank of 113 as of 14 June means that their qualification would depend on withdrawal of teams from other nations.

If India won't be able to field a team in the men's doubles, then the country will also go unrepresented in the mixed doubles event since the 16-team competition will have players only from main draws of other events.

Sajan Prakash has qualified for Tokyo. He has become first Indian swimmer to go below OQT.

Happy Dance GIF

This is one hell of the path breaking performance for India. Hope today Srihari would also break OQT in 100m backstroke.

    • It's all hogwash especially in the short attention span generation. Like nobody cares about Free Tibet anymore either. Free Palestine will last a lot longer due to Saudi Arabia becoming a sponsorship force in sports.   Israel is too weak in soccer to qualify from UEFA zone. The only time they qualified was from the Asian zone and they only beat Australia & New Zealand who were complete nobodies in the 1960s. No such luck in the 60 years since.
    • Oh I assure you FIFA dodger a bullet with Israel not qualifying…   But ya that’s kind of the thing, shut up and dribble is a mantra anti LGBT people have used often. I don’t think it’s hypocritical to remind them of their position
    • Ah, yes but that's not how pro athletes are taught in North America these days? Shut up & dribble is xenophobic, racist or whatever? The hypocrisy of some of these policies were exposed during 2022 World Cup already where the Saudis played it smart and waved their own "Free Palestine' slogans. Forget LGBT rights for a moment, how many 'Free Palestine' flags will be waved in 2026? Or will those be confiscated by default? Somehow I feel this won't be met with similar backlash when China clamped down on 'Free Tibet' in 2008 OG. Saudi Arabia is more important to global markets than Iran & Egypt
