Dumb question:

What will happen with the unused quotas ? For wxample the Halfpipe quotas which no one will use.

I mean. They should reallocate them to Italy as the host country in other sports or just invite athletes from universality countries which failed to qualify.

Quite dumb to not use them at all

That's how it should be, because we, as the host country, simply don't get anything out of it- apart from the qualifications in hockey, we'd have 99% of the same squad in other disciplines if the Olympics were held elsewhere. I'm truly sad that we can't find the two or three missing quotas in men's cross-country skiing, because the FIS and IOC are ruthless. But I'm sure that if the Olympics were in Sochi now, they wouldn't refuse Putin- for a suitable monetary compensation, of course:lol:

The host quotas are not to ensure the host nation has the biggest possible team, they're to ensure they are represented in all sports. Italy doesn't get host quota in for example cross-country skiing, because they don't need them, they already qualify through the usual way.

We have 5 people in the men's category and 20 years ago we had 10... However, we haven't used up some quotas in freestyle skiing because we don't have any athletes there, so why can't we transfer them to cross-country skiing so that two local boys (Mocellini, Dapra) who grew up near the route in Val di Fiemme can start there?

Because unfortunately emotions don't count in actually giving the quotas :p

Italy could have had two more quotas, if they had performed better and were placed higher on the ranking. I'd love to see these guys there, but don't think host quotas should be used for that.

I think that 20 years ago the host- country had it better situation in the sense that he could choose more quotas if he wanted, but maybe I remember wrong.

20 years ago everything was easier, including qualifying for the Olympics as a 'small nation' athlete...things change :p
