Weightlifting 2016 Discussion Thread

I looked at the start lists. The men are pretty much sealed with Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Cameroon and Morocco qualifying. They would require three DNFs to miss out since Ghana is way too far. So unless Congo DR is a secret powerhouse or Nigeria decides to show up (where are they?) those will be the five nations.

On the women's side things are a bit more competitive. Nigeria and Tunisia should be safe with Algeria, Cameroon, Madagascar, Morocco and Kenya fighting for two spots. Kenya is a bit of a long shot though. If Madagascar qualify it will be their first athlete in 2016. Also too bad Mauritius only sent three athletes if they had a fourth (even finishing last) they would have had a great shot at winning the quota.

We now have another complication. 2 Poles have failed drug tests for growth hormone, This could means they will lose a quota place,

Samoraj will probably lose 6th place from the European championships.

No, this was a national anti-doping test, thus not entering the IWF doping statistics

And they will take more quotas from other countries, Russia, Kazakhstan, Moldova etc. after finalizing 2015 cases. at least that's what they have to do per their rules but of course IWF is not among the clean sport federations. actually one of the dirtiest.

btw Azerbaijan has to give up one quota for the same reason, so if only Kostova qualifies , they have to give up her spot per rules ?! right ?! :mumble:

No , because IWF decides if they take the quota from male or female field. It is not stipulated how they will take the decision, but it is very unlikely that they will take "her" spot away I think

The quotas that were taken from Romania will also be reallocated. So, one more for both genders.

Btw, :FIN already qualified in men's, so they can't get women's quota.

Sorry guys, but where did you read this rule?

individual qualification is completely seperated female/male

The reallocation rule is "  the quota place will be reallocated in the respective gender ..to the next best ranked athlete..  whose NOC has not yet qualified a quota place"

:LBA ALKIKLI Ali Miftah - 17th (-85kg) [Will probably qualify a quota in either gender at African Champs]

This is based on the IWF website's Olympic ranking, but don't forget that these rankings still contain results from athletes that tested positive. If confirmed they will be out of these lists.

ONLY NATIONS WITH NO QUALIFIED ATHLETES  CAN QUALIFY but this is for male and female seperated!

Well, those quotas that were taken away from Romania should be reallocated (that's what Wiki states too). I'm not sure if it will be through rankings, but it should be reallocated somehow (though rankings seem likely). Anyway, in the end we should have 156 male and 104 female lifters.

I was referring to the fact that you said that Finland already had a male team qualification so a Finnish girl would not be able to get a quotum individually through reallocation. That is not true.

IWF will indeed take 1 quotum away from Romania but IWF will decide if they give it to male or female team.
